View Full Version : Carton and Boomer on WFAN

So I'm giving the show a listen....

In fairness, I am NOT a huge fan of the Carton and Boomer pairing on paper.

But the formula that seems to work best with Craig is Craig + Nice Guy. Craig and Sid didn't work because they were two antagonists. Craig and Rossi worked because it was Good Cop/Bad Cop. Boomer isn't exactly a "nice guy". He's more of a nice guy than Sid, but he's got more of an edge than Ray.

I like their interview style - Craig asks a question, then Boomer, and they rotate.

So far, it's pretty decent for a first show. It's not as bad as I thought their first show would be, and there seems to be a decent amount of chemistry. They ARE stepping over each other a bit though.

It also seems that Craig has carried over some of his Jersey audience. This is a good thing.

And Craig just mentioned him on the air. I think both Al and Lou Ruffino are producing the show, but it appears Charles McCord has cut ties with the show. Tracy Burgess is doing news.

Discussion: Schiano's work at Rutgers, and the potential of Schiano leaving to take over for Paterno at Penn state

Carlin: "You don't want to be the guy that follows The Guy. You want to be the guy AFTER the guy that follows The Guy."

Boomer: "Uh..."

Carton: "Well, you're talking to two guys that followed The Guy..."

I lol'ed.

Wow, I think Boomer just set the new radio two-a-day record.

He did a full four-hour morning show this morning and he's currently doing the analysis on Westwood One for the Colts/Saints game.

Which means he's going to do 8 hours of radio over 1000 miles apart.

Marv Albert, who is doing PBP for the game, and whose trademark is just destroying boomer on-the-air, is just ragging on him for being tired. It's funny as hell.

His 1993 season he was top-10 in pass attempts, completions, yards, and TD's.

I actually created a genius schedule -

Wakeup to 10am - Carton and Boomer.

10a-12p - last half of O&A + best of

12-3 R&F.

3-7 O&A replay.

Rouski

I'm ok with that schedule except I can't stand WFAN New Yorkkkkkkk. F'n hate the METS!!!!! And all other NY teams. Carton & Rossi were on at 2 and I would switch back and forth between them and R&F but I no longer have to worry about that so that problem has been solved. I hate listening to replay if I already listened to the show live thats when I surf XM and hit up the country stations.

I don't listen that often, and when I do it's only a few minutes at a time. So, I don't know if this is par for the course, but today both Boomer and Carton were breaking Al Dukes' balls big time. It seems like he put through a guy who claimed that he was one of the guys who caught the Bonds ball.

Carton asked "Are we sure that it's the real guy?" The Fabulous Al Dukes responds that he thinks it is because he asked the guy to swear to God that it was him. Everybody starts laughing and calling Al an idiot and the caller chickens out and winds up hanging up. Al's defense was "Well he swore to God, so he now has to answer to a higher power."

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Miss Al Dukes.

The show is OK. Carton is definately controlling the show with Boomer chiming in. I can see some point down the line Boomer getting tired of the 3am wake up calls and dropping it, leading to Carton and Continent...

Pay that man no mind...

At first I said it was "OK", but I have the change that now and said I think this show is Very Good and constantly improving. Boomer and Carton have better chemistry now and Boomer is not as hesitant to get mixed up in coversation he may have stayed away from in the past.

Plus, Al Dukes sings!

I don't even think about turning to Mike and Mike at this point, and only go to O&A if they start talking about A-Rod AGAIN.

I don't, it's just the conversation on the NYRMB amused me; there are people on there who wanted the show to be wall-to-wall sports and dissect every single thing that happened during the Giants game.

I think the funniest quote in the entire thread was the claim that Carton was not a "sports guy".

I will say this; although Carton's got an edge, the bitterness in his voice has disappated a LOT since he left 101.5. You can absolutely tell he's loving working at WFAN.

This is now my favorite morning terrestrial radio show. How has noone thought of doing a local morning sports show in NY on FAN? Because Imus was so popular? They will take some of Mike and Mike's audience away(espnization of sports is total annoying national sports issues are boring) and will hurt what left of O and A's. I remember likeing Sid(crackhead) and Scott(sportsguys!) but they had no shot of stealing an audience at that time in NY radio.

Another thing that will help out the Fan a lot in this situation is that ESPN does not come in AT ALL in Jersey. Add that to the name recognition that Craig has in NJ, and you've got something cooking.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I've just started listening to these guys over the last month or so because I've gotten bored of Mike & Mike.

I dig the chemistry between Boomer and Chris.

Chris is such a straight forward clown/jackass that it makes him seem personable.

Now I'm sure this has been talked about already but it's my understanding that Chris was on one of the old NEW shows but I'm not sure which one.

The " Sports Guys " show or whatever it was called seemed to have a revolving door so at what time was Carton on there and who was his partner ?

Carton has a bit of Mad Dog Russo in him; he'll throw stuff out there to annoy some and wait for the responses.

Boomer is pretty vanilla - although when he says he knows Football I believe him, as opposed to when Fatso Francessa says it.

I find their show to be pretty good- but like any sports talk show, its all dependent on what has happened the night before.

Ah, see, this is the confusion.

By "Chris", do you mean "Craig"?

Chris CARLIN is the update guy, and the voice of Rutgers football.

Craig CARTON is the former Jersey Guy from 101.5 and former Sports Guy.

(I guess with the similar last names and initials, people get confused.)

Craig was on WNEW back in 2001. He worked with Sid Rosenberg (who went on to IMUS, then had a few drug episodes and ended up getting fired, now clean and sober working on Miami's version of the FAN) and then worked with Blain Ensley. He was on the air and reporting live when 9/11 happened.

"briefly?"

Sid was on Imus for years. I would probably say 2002-2005. Sid was edgier than Imus, and Imus and Charles took great lengths to keep him reeled in.

He did make some comments that in a Post-Imus world would have gotten him nailed to the wall. But that was before everything hit the fan.

Sid wasn't fired for content; he was fired because he had major drug problems.

Sid was the same way Craig was - you either loved him or hated him but always listened to him. The problem is, you can't have personalities like Sid and Craig in the same room - it's TOO edgy and unlistenable. That's why the Rossi/Carton and Boomer/Carton pairings work.

Great line today:

Craig: "What do you call it - capicol or gabbagoul?"

Chris: "I call it delicious."

It was -

Sid and Craig.

Craig & two other guys (Eddie Ifft? Someone was in there)

Craig and Blain Ensley, from Rocky Allen Showgram on PLJ.

Ferrall and Blain.

Ferrall solo.

Ferrall gets fired in the St. Pat's mess, replaced with Richard Neer doing a WFAN-style show on WNEW (they used FAN branding and everything) and then finally, one last guy who I think was simulcast from Atlanta.

Sid Rosenberg, Craig Carton, and Blain Ensley

Sid was on WFAN from 2002-2005 as Imus's update guy and also was co-host of the Mid-Day show with Jody Mac and later, Joe Beningo.

He was dropped from the Imus show after he made some comments about Kylie Minogue in early 2005, and then fired altogether in late 2005 when he missed a Giants pre-game broadcast. He was replaced on the Imus show with Chris Carlin, and on the mid-day show with Evan Roberts.

Chris Carlin and Craig Carton... It's pretty easy to confuse the two. I like the chemistry between Craig and Boomer but when one of them is on vacation the show is not as good. I always thought of Craig and Sid as very similar acts. They both play up the gambling aspect. They both talk about the chicks quite a bit, and try to push the envelope. I don't think Craig has any of the addiction problems that have plagued Sid however. With Craig it's an act. With Sid it was a lifestyle. Ronny talks about days at NEW when Sid would hang around the station for hours after his shift because there were usually guys outside waiting for him. He'd usually slink away under the cover of darkness... Probably to the nearest crap game.

The incidents about the Williams Sisters and Dish Network happened when he was on IMUS. That led up to him being fired from Imus - the Kylie Minogue thing was the last straw.

He did do weekend work on WFAN, but I think that was basically "auditions" for him to get a new job somewhere else; to prove he was clean and was reliable. They had already given his spots for the mid-day show to Roberts and his Giants pregame spot to Carlin, so it wasn't like they were going to fire them to put Sid back in.

He ended up in Miami and it sounds like he's doing pretty good down there; I guess it's a hard lesson to learn.

What a revolving door lineup.
I think Opie called them the Menudo oof radio.

My favorite bit that stands out was the cockfight.

Richard Neer and Harris Allen (WFAN on WNEW)

Sid was on WFAN from 2002-2005 as Imus's update guy and also was co-host of the Mid-Day show with Jody Mac and later, Joe Beningo.

He was dropped from the Imus show after he made some comments about Kylie Minogue in early 2005, and then fired altogether in late 2005 when he missed a Giants pre-game broadcast. He was replaced on the Imus show with Chris Carlin, and on the mid-day show with Evan Roberts.

With Sid it was a lifestyle. Ronny talks about days at NEW when Sid would hang around the station for hours after his shift because there were usually guys outside waiting for him. He'd usually slink away under the cover of darkness... Probably to the nearest crap game.

Damn, I've never heard that before. Anybody got a clip? Back when I was interning with the Dragons, Sid was doing play by play for a season or two. He always seemed like he was somewhat aloof and checking over his shoulder. After his demons became public, it all came together.

To Al's credit, Craig hasn't bashed at all... and Craig had issues with other producers.

My question is this -

Mark Feinsand (sp?) was on Friday... they were telling a story about how someone at WFAN went ballistic because Mark, an intern at the time, ate an unauthorized slice of pizza.

Mark and Eric Spitz (PD of WFAN) both protected who the guilty party was... it's either Russ Salzberg, Russo, or Mike Francesa.

Outside of the "legends" seating, I'm pretty sure that prices have only elevated a little bit. It's the scalpers right now who are making a premium on the newness of both stadiums.

That being said, the Yankees actually REDUCED prices on a lot of food because they run their own concessions now. $6 beer. So in the end, it becomes a wash.

I wouldn't go that far. It's definitely a very different dynamic than Craig had with Ray. I will admit that Boomer is very wooden some times, but that's part of the show's uniqueness.

Mostly the calls that were anti-Jets and he was hanging up on them midsentence and then rambling on about how it's great for New York and every New Yorker should love it.

And today he's making bold predictions that the Jets are gonna win, which I'd expect from a fan of the team, but they come off so lame because he's not putting anything up for it.

If the Jets win he'll do an " I told you so " but if they lose he'll pass it off as " Well that was supposed to happen ".

He needs to lock himself into another bet like walking across the bridge and that'd put so emphasis on his pick.

Russo is like Rainmain. He has an insanely good memory, but has trouble with practical things and he's heckler-like by looking at the past with rose-colored glasses. His opinions on things like music and movies are pretty bad, but his knowledge of sports history is incredibly impressive.

Mushnick.

This was his quote -

What's worse, WFAN's Craig Carton's cruel references to that young, unhinged ESPN go-fer who was played by Steve Phillips -- Carton repeatedly called her "a pig" -- or Boomer Esiason's indulgence of it? By the way, at 48, isn't it time Esiason went with something a tad more adult than Boomer -- maybe Corky or Biff?

Never mind the fact that he's been known as Boomer his entire playing career and it's basically his brand.

It comes from the Mets pathetic season last year when one of the broadcasters let his kid do an inning. The kid uses the sandwhich as an analogy
