Ok, here's the deal. I moved from the Dayton Ohio area to Myrtle Beach in July 2006. In late July of 2007 I get an IRS notice that I am to be audited, at an address in Dayton, so in response I send a letter requesting a change in venue, explaining that it is a bit much to expect that I travel 700 miles to be reamed.
So now they have sent me a letter and a form (872) to sign, the letter states " The limitation period allowed by law for assessing additional tax on your federal tax return will expire soon, Therefore, we request that you consent to extend the period for assessment" this sounds like something I should say no to, but then they go on with "if the forms are not signed and returned we will not be able to transfer your case".
They go on about South Carolina refusing any case without at least 1 year left on it, but the form they want signed would extend their right to assess taxes on my 2004 return untill 2009, 2 years past the 3 years the law gives. I'm fucked right?
