I understand why the state wanted to buy this but half a million dollars can and should be used on more important things. The owners could have donated the letter, if they chose to sell it (which I have no problem with) then someone else should have bought it. The buyer shouldnt have been the taxpayers of texas.

I don't agree. Its an important piece of not only history, but TEXAS history, and something all the people of Texas can take pride in. Besides, Many, MANY people come to Texas and visit the Alamo, and tourism from that has brought millions and millions of dollars into the state, and if that in anyway enhances that presentation, and if it brings more people in to spend money in Texas, its money well spent.
Besides, this is also a GENUINE historical artifact, and money being spent by the state to further education and knowledge is never money wasted.

I agree with Mudo. Besides, they can save money in other ways, like buying their salsa from New York City.

Guy talks sports.
You're talking about a state that requires its high school students to take TEXAS History the same way they take American History. This is not surprising.

Well...technically, Texas WAS an independent country from 1837 to 1845 before it was annexed

Almost every state I've lived in does that. So far Maryland doesn't seem to care or has no history.
Neither does Connecticut.
