I was watching Fashion Rocks tonight and at the end Santana and Alicia Keys did a duet of Black Magic Woman. When I heard it I immedeatly said that is the office song of Santana. What are some other songs that would be considered the defining song of the band that played it.

Funny thing is -- it's a Fleetwood Mac song. In fact , Carlos Santana lifted Peter Green's solo almost note for note.
For me, the official song of Santana is "Soul Sacrifice". (Yeah, I know "Oye Como Va" is their second most-popular song.)

I went back and forth between JJF and Satisfaction. I ultimately chose JJF because it's really the link between the early days and their '68-72 peak. I tried to come up with something for the Beatles but it's impossible with their evolution of sound. I would pick "Hard Day's Night" for the early days, and maybe "A Day In the Life" for the latter era...but I have no problem with "Hey Jude". With the Who, I probably would pick "My Generation", but WGFA is right up there. I would probably go with "Waiting For the Man", though, with the Velvets. Maggie May definitely works for Stewart, but "Stay With Me" would be the Faces' choice.

Just took a quick spin thru iTunes, this is what i came up with
AC/DC - Back in Black
What more could you say for them, their singer died and they came back as a stronger band, that's a defining moment if I ever saw one.

A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It?
Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole
Bjork - Human Behaviour
Black Label Society - The Blessed Hellride
Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Candiria - Constant Velocity Is As Natural As Being At Rest
The Crystal Method - Busy Child
Guns n Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
Lamb of God - Laid to Rest
Lou Reed - Sweet Jane
Rush - Tom Sawyer
Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus

Nah, I think "Folsom Prison Blues" is his signature song. "A Boy Named Sue" is good and funny but he didn't even write it.

I have to agree with "Folsom Prison Blues" over "A Boy Named Sue" (always seemed too much like a novelty song to me), but I'd pick "I Walk the Line" as his signature song.

ACDC is on I-Tunes? I thought they were one of the holdouts.
I Tunes has the "popularity" thingy, so Bob's list is probably the most accurate. We all have our personal faves, but a band's definitive song would likely be the one that draws the biggest audience. It's also likely not to be their best song, not a critic's choice, but its the one that defines them in the minds of most people.

By iTunes I meant the program, not the music store.
It depends on the artist, I doubt most people who tangentially know of Tom Waits would choose Chocolate Jesus, but I think most of his fans would.

Here's the list repeated with the iTunes Number one song ranking below it:
Tupac Shakur - Hail Mary
Changes
A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It?
Electric Relaxation
Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole
Man in the Box
Bjork - Human Behaviour
It's Oh So Quiet
Black Label Society - The Blessed Hellride
Fire It Up
Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Iron Man - First Match
Candiria - Constant Velocity Is As Natural As Being At Rest
Down, This Song is number two
Im too tired to do the rest. It matches up pretty poorly, but mainly because any new songs are at the top of the list.

Gotcha. Again, I thought you were talking about the music store. I also might have missed the point of this thread, if its about people personal faves about what they think the band represents then forget my first post.
I'd hate to think any band/artist I love would have only one definitive song. Maybe one from each period, maybe.

I think there can be a defining song for REM. They're career has had several different styles, and each style has had big songs.

I'm not as huge of a Bowie (or music fan) as much as a number of others, but wouldn't it be "Changes?"
