Can Fred Thompson win? Republicans (neo-cons) favorite battle cry is "Liberal Hollywood Elite" if anyone on the left even suggests someone from hollywood could consider politics. But Republicans actually seem to get even more worked into a lather to vote when it is some dummy from hollywood. You would think that Reagan was Jesus Christ to listen to them talk. Even though the facts bare out that he (personally, himself, not his admin..) was a fcuking boob.

I'm always amused how Republicans seem to love voting actors into office despite, as you said, wasting no time slamming every and all liberal celebrity who dares to even utter something remotely political. People can try to explain it away, but I don't see how it's anything other then over the top hypocrisy.

That said, I think Thompson actually has a decent shot. Hollywood aside, his politics are basically Reagan-lite. That's going to appeal to a lot of Republicans, especially those who think they're completely fed up with the current neo-cons (hellllooooooo, irony!) and nervous about semi-liberal guys like Rudy.

Main difference is that he was a politician 1st, THEN slowly dipped into acting.

In Washington, he is thought of as a politician who has done some acting; not an actor who wants to be a politician.

His political service dates back to 1969, and is pretty impressive.

So yeah, Id say he has a shot.

I caught his little meet n greet on C-SPAN via VOA yesterday and I think he's definitely got a shot. Mainly because he said nothing but a bunch of base-pandering hollow patriotic nothing. But he said it well. And he was on TV. Unless Arnold throws his giant hat in the ring I'd give Thompson a slight advantage over Rudy for the nomination and about even odds against Hillary. And I'm really not happy about it. Read his columns - he's a watered down hayseed Bill O'Rielly.

I hold to my prediction that one day the Republican party will ammend the Constitution to make Arnold President one day. True, they can't do it now because they don't control Congress, but some day it will happen.

Exactly. Thompson has a great mix of political clout and recognizable personality. He is both knowledgeable and famous - which is a formidable political combination.

Combine Thompson's "status" with the fact that the Democrats can't seem to find a likable, electable candidate no matter how hard they try, and Fred Thompson could very well be the next President of the United States.

If he was still alive I would have voted for him

In all seriousness though most people think Thompson is sort of an outsider to Washington but his political career goes back to the Nixon era. He was also a big time lobbyist for the tobacco industry during the 80's. I think he has a shot. I also consider him a strong possibility of being a running mate if he doesnt get the nomination

And yet, he's trying to sell himself as someone from outside the Beltway. And he did some questionable lobbying.

Some questionable lobbying?

Thompson has spent nearly 20 years of his life doing lobbying work. That strong record includes:

Lobbying for the Tennessee Savings & Loan League to deregulate S&L's in 1982. That turned out great for America.
His work for Equitas Ltd. so they could bone asbestos victims and their damage claims certainly qualified him to get major support from corporations.
Lobbying for cable companies....

Seriously, Thompson's record is simply that of a self-interested turd. He plays the role of "aww-schucks", but he'll wear his Gucci's while he's screwing the common man.

I can see him pulling it off, get rove behind him, and lay into Julianni with you love abortions, and you lived with a gay man TV ads and he could get '00 McCain'd. Maybe even sail the rumor he has a illegitimate black child out there somewhere.

He wouldn't be able to exploit Julianni's 11 marriages because he's divorced with a trophy wife and as for his public speaking/debates, he's hollywood, but Rudy might still have a slight edge there.

And vs the Clinton/Obama ticket he would skate. When it comes time to vote again, the lack of identity and low approval of the "new" democratic congress will neutralize any advantages dems would have had of voters being sick of neo-cons. Either Julianni or Thompson could win that battle.

I wish the McCain campaign didn't implode.

arnold can't run, unless i missed them changing the laws on foreign born folks. i wouldn't put it past me not having a clue.

It would take a constitutional amendment for anyone not born in America to be president. This would consist of the amendment passing by 2/3rds in the house and senate as well as ratification by 3/4ths of the states. I just don't see it happening anytime soon unless they tacked on something like a 20 -30 year minimum on citizenship.

Great logic here. This guy is just another serious "what's in it for me" dickbag and has no substance to a campaign at all. I'm sure he'll have plenty of money from corp america to back him.

I give you my Homer Simpson theory. People really warmed up to Homer as he became more and more stupid. Hence people, especially if they disagree and can't back up their side, hate smart people. Sure Bill can get caustic, but is that any different than O'Reilly's tactics. Oh yah it is, he can't back up 95% of the bullshit out of his mouth. Good news for conservatives, the majority of your candidates fit the Homer Simpson theory. Too bad we need a fucking change or this country will continue to lower it's standard of living and the middle class will continue to shrink. But that's ok, the rich are paying less taxes and we're at war. That seems to make perfect sense to me, homer spoon.

I don't know, so far he looks like a lousy campaigner.

But then again, so is Hillary.

and I'm hoping an even WORSE campaigner will jump in at the last minute named Newt Gingrich. But thats a pipe dream, anyway.

He's flawed, they all are. Bush was one of the worst debaters I've ever seen, very scripted and always looked out of his element. But was a good campaigner and very good in one to one interviews. Awful giving formal speeches, never looked like his suit fit, in more ways than one.
Clinton was a great campaigner, excellent in one to one interviews. Gave speeches that would put the entire country to sleep. Also, he was over prepared for his debates, his answers tended to come across wonkish.
Reagan was actually a sub par debater, his sense of humor would bail him out of tough spots. He was a good campaigner, seemed to connect with people you wouldn't expect him to. As far as formal speeches go, he is the gold standard.

I'd have to see more of Thompson. So far I'm not impressed.

If anyone pays even half attention to his political history and his current claimed policies and they'll see that he's simply more of the same that we've seen from the Republicans over the last 25-30 years, he's just derssed up much better than the last 8-year trainwreck. Like I said, he's Reagan-lite (in every way that term can possibly be interpreted), and given that the current neo-con regime was birthed under Reagan's watch (hell, look how many people in his White House are in it now), voting Thompson in would essentially be an endorsement as things have been going under Dubya. Pass.

LOL! My mental state is fine, but these "politicians" these days evoke in me a very emotional response. I just cannot stand the backwardness of this hayseed country.
