OK, here's what happened to me today. I'm driving home from work, I take a side road to pick up some fast food for dinner. An old lady with (money in her hand) comes up to my car and asks me to drive her to a Synagogue a few blocks away. I say sure, no problem. She goes on to tell me the cab drivers in the area are all nuts, nobody speaks english (she has a heavy accent, plus she tells me she's 88). She tells me where she needs to go, I tell her I'm not a car service (she thought I was for some unknown reason. My car is white), and I don't want her money. But fine I'll try to help her out.

I drive to the location she tells me. . . which doesn't exist. The two streets don't cross each other, not even close. So I turn around and tell her I know of another synagogue in the neighborhood, which is on one of the streets she said. But she says "No, drop me off here". I said "Are you sure?" she says "Its OK". I say "Are you sure you know where you are?" she says "approximately". It was on one of the streets she said, but the cross street didn't exist and I didn't see any Synagogue.

I felt awful afterwards. I went back to where I dropped her off a few minutes later, but she wasn't there. I have no idea what I could have done differently, but she was a good mile away from where I picked her up and I suspect she ended up having a cop drive her home like my Grandma did a few times when she got real old. It was by a bus stop where she got out, so she might have just hopped on that bus, I don't know. She wasn't incoherent or confused or anything, just very old.

I've done things like that before except I would give someone directions and as they were to far I realized I gave it to them wrong. And then I think that they'll just get pissed at me and think that I did it on purpose cause I'm a New Yorker instead of really trying to help them.

I didn't get any sense she was incoherent or anything. She was even telling me about friends of hers her were still "sharp as a tack". So she knew how old she was and she even told me her age. Mentally she seemed fine. I just don't know what I could have done differently, outside of not trying to help her. For all I know the Synagogue was nearby, I just didn't see anything.

Mine did too, plus my other Nana on my Dad's side had Alzheimers. So I know how people are when they're not all there. But I didn't see anything like that, she didn't drift off or seem to not know where she was. She seemed pretty sharp, actually. I think she approached me because I was the first white guy she saw. She immediately went on to complain about how all the cabbies don't speak much english, so I guess she saw me and figured I did.
