The rumored format change at CBS Radio's WYSP/Philadelphia looks to be a reality in the making as the station cut essential staffers and air personalities today. Surviving the cut is afternoon drive personality Kidd Chris who was on air today discussing the staff cuts, relaying that most of the air staff including Barsky, Matt & Huggy, and Scotty & Alex were let go. Also let go were Kidd Chris producer Brad Maybe and show staffer Monkeyboy. A return to a rock music format is expected.

Barsky I can understand. Matt and Huggy I can't, considering they've been with the station FOREVER through multiple format changes. They were the Jefe and J-Dubs to DeBella, for God's sake.

Oh good, now they'll sound like every other radio station.
I fucking hate radio execs. They'll uproot everything at a station if they see a radio trend that may bring them 1% more revenue. God forbid they want to do something original.

it is going to get to the point where CBS radio has 1 PD who programs for the whole day, and they just roll the music out to every station. it will be almost like fake satellite radio. so at 10:07am every KROC in the country will be playing some Green Day song. that way they can all take commercial breaks at the same time and make sure revenue stays up. music isn't local anymore, so why even bother trying to pretend each station needs a local jock.

or... Blink?
All of the Free-FMs are failing, and suddenly Rock music is hot in philly again. They were getting killed by WMMR and the new alt-rock station on 104.5

If NY and Philly can't support a talk format, just imagine how awful programming is in the red states. There is very little ad-supported programming that I even like at this point, and I'm just glad that the internet, satellite, and pay-cable give me the option to purchase what I want to see/hear without the ads for crap I'm never gonna buy.
But I do enjoy the rock station when I go to the gym.

I never really enjoy a rock FM station, there's many more misses than hits. And you have to sit through commercials.

I guess with all our hip-hop / R & B / Spanish/ and formats directed at soccer Moms there is no room on the FM dial for country.

If they put country in WNEW after O&A left, i bet it would have done better than blink and jack and right now would be a huge player in the market

I'm not a country fan at all, but I have never understood why SOMEONE in the NYC Metro area didn't put country on at least a smaller local station.
Country broke huge a few years ago and is still not being played around here, it's dumb. I know a lot of people who like at least the country/rock crossover shit.

Rating wise yes (although this Fresh format is doing well) however country is a very tough sell to advertisers in New York.

but if you have the ratings, the advertisers will follow regardless of format.

not true... What good are ratings if you can't sell the station? Lets say for example WOR is pulling a 4.5 and Z100 is pulling a 2.5. Who will bill more? The station with more listeners? No Z100 will bill much higher because Z100 has a much more desirable demographic for advisors.

here is why talk is failing... it has no balls.
i listen to O&A everyday, but seriously what do they do even on a weekly basis that would attract anyone from the 20-30 year old crowd? the 2 of them are in long term committed relationships, so they barely have chicks on the show. when the do, they tend to focus more on the other guys around them and get into things with them.
not to mention the corporate aspect which castrates them from even attempting to do anything fun or exciting. so in the end, regardless of the words coming out of their mouths, they are basically sitting there chatting about current events. i think that would be fine if once or twice per week there was some action going on.
no one takes chances. corporations are scared to let jocks do anything, and jocks are scared to lose there jobs. and the final product of all that is basically shit.

Advertisers isn't the tough sell, it's demographics.
Country plays well to the suburbs, but not the actual city. Which is interesting, because WPLJ has pretty much made it's bones getting the Jersey Soccer mom market.

I agree with this, although Fresh has been doing very well for itself.
Jack would have done better in NYC if it replaced Blink. Jack made the mistake of replacing an NYC institution.

Its more of the perception of the Country audience by advertisers then anything. WPLJ sales staff makes lots of money (for a station that has had piss poor ratings for quite a while now) because they have the one of the most desired demo's, suburban soccer Moms.
