They were showing the Alice In Chains Unplugged last night on VH1 Classics and although I have seen it several times before it's one of the few things I can watch everytime it's on.
I don't like ranking my " favorites " whether it be group, movie, actor, etc ... but I think by far they were my favorite group of that time.
The way Staley and Cantrell echoed each other on the songs was erie and awesome.
I know it's trite and corny to say that Staley went too early but it would've been nice to have some more of their music.
Cantrell's solo stuff is great but w/out that previoulsy mentioned Staley background vocal it's not even close to AIC.
*** Creepy that I'm listening to ESPNRadio and College Gameday comes back on leading w/ Man In A Box right after I post this. ***

While I was listening to the songs last night I was trying to figure out which one I liked the best.
It's tough picking one over another but I think Don't Follow is my favorite.
Down In A Hole would probably be next.
I think the Sap EP was almost as good as Jar Of Flies, if not in terms of music/lyrics, but because it had great cameos ( Chris Cornell, Mark Lannegan, and either the Fatty or Non-Fatty from Heart ).
From their later stuff Again is a good tune as are Get Born Again and Grind.

Love AIC. I think Angry Chair may be my favorite but they had a ton of great songs. The funny thing about the Unplugged is the "Friend's don't let friends get Friends haircut" on Inez' bass because Metallica was sitting in the front row when they had first cut all their hair.

Actually I've been mistaken all these years ( although I think I did know it subliminally ).
It was actually Mark Arm of Mudhoney that was on the Sap album and not Mark Lannegan of Screaming Trees.
Lannegan was in Mad Season w/ Staley.
Wikipedia was saying that they are gonna release a new studio album as well as a live set w/ the new singer.
Doubt I'll listen to it as it won't be the same.
I'd love to have been able to see the uneditied version of the Unplugged performance.
Supposedly Staley sings the wrong verse on one of the songs. I think they may capture this on the DVD and the album because I know at one point Staley says something jokingly like " Well fuck you man !! ".
There's also some interaction w/ Metalicca I think who were in the audience.
If I remember correctly one of the guys in the band, maybe Mike Inez, had the phrase " Friends don't let friends cut their hair " ( or something like that ), written on his guitar and it was in reference to one of the Metallica guys having cut his hair shorter.
I dont remember if they perform a song at all together though ( but I bet they did at the actual performance even if it didnt make the taped show ).

Here's Hetfield singing Would? with AIC last year.

As far as a new album I saw where Cantrell said that they were going to do one but it would not be called AIC. He said they would have a new name.
JimBeam

Guess you were already posting that huh ?
One of the things I always admired in a way about AIC was the way they never tried to cut Staley out of the group.
It would've been easy for them, especially w/ the push of the record label, to have gotten a new singer or to have just gone w/ Cantrell singing all the songs while Staley was AWOL.
Quote by Cantrell says it all"Very frustrating, but we stuck it out. We rode the good times together, and we stuck together through the hard times. We never stabbed each other in the back and spilled our guts and do that kind of bullshit that you see happen a lot".[
There's actually a petition now to have the current AIC drop the name as a sign of respect for Staley.
While I understand the sentiment I think that the other guys have earned the right to keep the name and both they and fans of the group know that there's a difference between the real AIC and this new band.

I didn't really get into Alice in Chains until after the fact. Still, with all due respect to Nirvana, AIC is easily my favorite rock band of the 90's.

Staley's hair was actually long in the Man In The Box vid but I think it was short for most all other songs/vids.
There's been 2 books written about him and one is rumored to be made into a movie.
I'm sure they're only like 200 pages long but I may look into getting them and reading them.
It was cool to read all the quotes by other performers about him.
Only Mark Arm was negative and it came off more in a way that while it did suck foir him to die that he could've tried to help himself.
That's a little pompous but the guy apparently had to kick his own habit and did it by seperating himself from what he thought were the bad influences.
I havent heard any of the tribute songs ( one by Eddie Vedder and I think I read about 2 others but some other artists ) but I think I need to find those and see if they are any good.

I know Zakk Wylde did one and I think Staind did one too.

Yeah I think the one Staind did was " Layne ".
Vedder did " 4/20/04 ".
I read that other name in one of the articles and I think it said his song was kinda about both Staley and Cobain.

alice in chains is awesome and it seems that every year that passes, more and more people appreciate them. Thats the sign of a great band. So many people i talk to rank them way above "Nirvana" these days, and i dont think you couldve said that 10 years ago

He screws up a chorus or two on the Unplugged cd. He and Cantrell sing different words. I think it might be No Excuses.

I had always liked them better @ the time when the grunge music was at it's most popular and I think it was because they were so less exposed than Nirvana or Pearl Jam ( and even Soundgarden who became more mainstream earlier than AIC ).
Even though their videos were always on MTV I didn't really notice them becoming MTV-popular until the self-titled album. It might have had to do w/ the Unplugged set or the Unplugged gig might have been offered to them because they were becoming more mainstream ( but not in a sell-out kinda way ).
I think because they didn't have any big controversies which brought their name into the spotlight it kept them more of a cult thing. More about their music than their politics/personal lives.
Pearl Jam had their whole stand up against Ticket Master thing and Nirvana had the Cobain suicide ( and although Staley eventually died tragically as well his death wasn't as big a story ).

zakk wylde did 2. one was called "layne" and the other "throwin it all away"
i dont know if the staind one is called "layne" or not. or whether they covered it, but i know its a zakk wylde song.

I've been listening to Dirt a lot lately, especially driving around. Its just an absolutely amazing album.
I always wonder why more rock sucks now than did in the 90s, and I think it simply comes down to drug use. You listen to Nirvana or especially AIC and you hear real desperation in the lyrics. Like the guy singing could die at any moment and he's trying to get out every single emotion he is feeling just so you may be able to relate. That isn't in music anymore. You don't have real junkies like Layne Staley somehow recording albums with two bands (I still have no fucking clue how he pulled that off), yet almost unable to live. The raw emotion and life come through in his lyrics and AIC's music unlike any other band.
And Alice In Chains cds hold up as well or better than any of the greatest cds. Just plain fucking awesome.

AIC will always be one of my favorites. Layne has never gotten the credit or respect he truly deserved. There was something so haunting about his voice. Their music just never gets dated. As for the currently touring AIC, I know they are really sensitive to the idea of not replacing Layne and they have no intention of doing it. They view it as a tribute to him and nothing more. But I must say if any of you have the chance catch them live, the guy they have singing Layne's part is dead on. I went in expecting very little, but was thoroughly satisfied and surprised.

Don't bring that up to Clints. He thinks Creed and Nickleback are the best bands of the last 20 years.

Well, Creed ruined it forever and then Nickleback shot it in the face to make sure no one would recognize it.

They're one of the few bands from that whole grunge scene that I ever feel like listening to anymore (I'll occasionally pull out the Nirvana and Mudhoney albums). I wasn't crazy about them when they were active, but I really got into them some time in the late 90s. I think they'll go down as one of the few grunge bands whose music holds up over time.

Thems fightin words!
but speaking of Grunge music, Am I the only one who thinks Nirvana is OVERRATED? With all do respect, I cant listen to a band when the singer sounds drunk in each song and u cant understand a fucking word. Besides "Smells Like Teen Spirit", they are horrid. only good thing to come from them was Foo Fighters.

Rooster popped up on random the other day while I was sitting in my living room. My music comes out in surround sound, so the layers of the music are really separated. I knew that Staley and Cantrell were really good at harmonizing, but listening to their vocals separate during Rooster is fucking astounding. After that song, I just put on Dirt and sat there and listened to it all the way through. I hadn't sat and just listened to a cd in a real long time. Dirt is just a flat out incredible cd.
And I've been listening to nothing but Alice In Chains now for 3 days. I just made my way through Jar of Flies again, another great cd.

Their last album was always my favorite. I remember getting it on vinyl a week before the CD was released (this was usually the case back in the 90s - they would release the LP a week before the CD). I worked at a small independent record store here in NJ when I was in college. I was working solo that Tuesday and ripped open the album as soon as we got it in. I played it non-stop all that day until 9:00 when I closed. In the evening when things got slow, I propped the door front open (it was a cold day in November) so I could smoke a cigarette and listen. "Over Now" is still one of my favorites by them.
Also am a big fan of Mad Season... it's a shame they only made one album.

I grew up listening to them when i was a kid in the early 90's. Definately one of the most important bands of the 90s and alternative rock.
They are supposed to have a new cd coming soon i heard with a new singer.
Other important bands of the time as well are: Sonic Youth, Husker Du, The Pixies, and Kyuss.
