Please help settle a drunken argument that was sparked by a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon, of all things. Any constructive input is welcome.

OK, here goes: Lets say that you are completely alone on a deserted island with absolutely nothing to eat. Could you extend your life by eating parts of your own body, like a foot or other appendage. Assume that you would somehow be able to corterize any wound and prevent yourself from bleeding to death.

I maintain that this is not a good idea as any blood loss that you did suffer would further weaken you. Also, while you may feel satiated with that foot in your stomach, you're not actually taking in any new calories, are you? Is there like some kind of zero sum of calorie intake since you're just moving your foot from the end of your leg to your stomach?

You would be taking in calories. The meat from your foot would be digested. You may be right about the blood loss, though. Also, there's the potential chromosome damage from ingesting human flesh. I'd also go for a hand over a foot. Sure, there's less meat, and it would make doing some things more difficult, but you really need both feet, if you are going to be able to run away from potential dangers.

I would say yes, you are taking in calories. Not sure how long a eating a foot would extend your life though. Any caloric intake maybe outweighed by the negatives. You body temperature would undoubtedly rise in order to ward off infections, which would probably burn more calories.

there would be calories in your foot (dead skin, nails, hair) assuming it was a clean cut and you didn't suffer too much blood loss I think it would sustain you for a while.
