I've been looking forward to this movie for a few years. It's been through a lot of changes and re-cuts, and I'm curious as to how it will finally turn out.

Wow, I've been waiting for this to come out for a long time now. It looks very interesting, weird cast list but I think it could work well.

Something is confusing me.
Half the scenes show Dwayne totally freaked out, and the other half show him ultra confident. Very interesting.
Although I like the "Pimps do not commit suicide!" line.

Did anyone else notice the random assortment of past and current Saturday Night Live cast members? From the trailer I noticed Jon Lovitz, Cheri Oteri, Nora Dunn and Amy Poehler. IMDB indicates that Janeane Garafolo is in it as well. As an added note, Will Sasso, formerly of MadTV is apparently in it as well.

Cheap recognizable talent with SAG cards.

Likely an oversimplified explanation. Outside of the occasional SNL alum starring vehicle or feature based on SNL characters, how frequently do you see this many SNL players with supporting roles in one movie.
This movie looks interesting, but I may have to wait until it comes to cable because of my steadfast refusal to pay to see a movie starring the Rock.

You sound like my wife.
At least he's not a completely awful actor. He's better than a lot of the former athlete turned actors, although I guess that's not say much.

I bet Horatio Sans would have killed as the lead.

The new film by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) came out today. Here is the synopsis from IMDB.
"Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros(Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now(Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner(Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy."
I know by looking at the cast, it sounds like it'll be shit, but I saw it today and I loved it. It seemed like a David Lynch movie with more well-known stars. It'll probably take repeated viewings to understand, also, there are graphic novel "prequels" out which I haven't read yet. However, there's just something about this movie that I really liked. The music with the combinations of surreal images just grabbed me. At first, I was like, what the hell is this drivel but as it went on I really dug it. Anyone else heard/seen it?

This movie is gonna take us on a ride into the future... All the way to the year 2008.

it seems interesting. I think it's going to fizzle at the box office because people probably don't know a lot about it. I'll probably check it out on DVD. I've seen some clips online, it seemed cool to me but I don't think the movies for everyone.

It's supposed to be an imagined reality that we are currently in, being a war-torn society due to a nuclear attack in Texas that happened in 2002. However, it's obviously a symbol for the war in Iraq, where most people don't even know what they're fighting for.

Has anyone seen this?
I don't mind working a little to understand a movie... but WOW... it's definitely a visually good looking movie. And it does make sense... here and there... great music too... but I'm guessing in order to fully understand or get a better grasp, you have to read the graphic novel prequels? The movie's FAQ section on IMDB was helpful too.
Sheepy... I reckon you did... thoughts?
This was the most god awful piece of shit I've seen in my life. Other than the music, it was all completely terrible.

I tried to warn people about this piece of shit in the netflix friends thread. Richard Kelly has shown that he can not make a coherent film

So basically it was Donnie Darko.
So basically it was Donnie Darko.
The plot was actually a little bit more intelligible than that, but that was offset by horrible everything else.

I now feel vindicated for being distinctly unimpressed with Donnie Darko.

I'm not sure what to think. I liked Donnie Darko (But I'm not one to call it a "great film", or call Richard Kelly a genius for it. I just enjoyed watching it) and I really wanted to like Southland Tales. But I just don't.
I kept thinking maybe this is like Robocop and it's a satire of some kind, not to be taken seriously or literally. But I don't think that's what Richard Kelly was going for.
Now I'm not so sure I like Donnie Darko anymore.
