Last night when we picked up my daughter from daycare, the manager informed us that as of the end of the day TODAY, the center was closing. All of the teachers found out that morning that they were being laid off and hundreds of families are now without child care.

I can't blame the teachers or the manager because they were just as surprised as everybody else, but apparently the owner had known for WEEKS that they were going to close. Letting all of the families know that they have to find new arrangements within 48 hour is inexcusable IMO.

Have any of you folks dealt with similar circumstances - not just childcare, but any business that acts with such unbelievable disregard for their patrons? I have a couple of other examples, but the one above takes the cake for me...

When people are let go at my work, it's done at the end of the day on Friday and security escorts them out. It's embarassing and uncalled for, but I guess they have to take those precautions for insurance reasons.

Matt, that totally blows. Do you have any other childcare options open to you? Perhaps your job or your wife's has a daycare program? Any family members to cover you until you can find something more permanent? I hope you can find a daycare provider without too much aggravation, I know how tough it is to find a place that you can trust.

The owner is a scumbag, don't worry about him getting his. I'm sure his employees have something planned for him.

Yeah, it's been statistically shown that there is less chance of an incident when you fire people on a Friday.

In 2002 I was working for a grocery delivery service, a very small business (less than 15 employees). On the friday before labor day the owner informed us that the place was closing...........that fucking day!! He had the whole act down with the shaky voice and teary eyes when he told us and because he actually came off as a nice guy and was a leader in his church (of which most of the employees attended) most of the employees felt bad for HIM. And when I think about it it was probably the best thing that happened to me. I went back to school and am now very close to graduating. He went back to his old 6-figure job.

I wouldn't recommend E'ville_Doug's babysitting service.

Thanks for your concern TJ - luckily things panned out this afternoon. After searching long into the night last night and and making tons of calls throughout the day today, we finally found an accredited daycare that has an opening and is only $5 more than we were paying before. It is actually through one of the local YMCA's and it has a really good reputation. They had already filled their last spot this morning, but apparently somebody else backed out and we were offered the spot when it opened back up.

We tried a ton of locations and it is amazing how expensive and difficult finding child care can be! If you want an accredited program that has a good rep you have to pay through the nose.

I have no idea how the owners of our "former" daycare couldn't afford to keep the place open. We were paying an arm and a leg and there were a couple hundred kids at the center whose parents were paying the same or more. I know the teachers weren't making that much, so the owner should have been making a pretty solid profit.

The only things I can think of are that the insurance premiums increased dramatically or the building owner wanted to drastically increase the lease amount (the center is in a rapidly developing section along a main route, so something else in that spot might have been more profitable). Either or both scenarios could have screwed the profit margin and forced the place to close. Other than the owner being in league with the devil, it's the only thing that makes sense.

Either way, they should have given us more than a day's notice...

My daycare broad left me at the Forestville Youth Park when I was 5. Luckily there was another ex-hippy daycare chick who knew mine and she brought me home with her crew.

48 hours? I think notice of a daycare closing is more like a month in advance

you lost your job and he lost his business. why would you think his "shaky voice and teary eyes" were an act? you're acting like he closed the business just to piss you off. crazy talk.

You're right, they should. But there might be more to it than you realize. If its workers are unionized there might have been legal action which was up in the air until the last minute, if its a company in financial trouble they may have been trying to secure loans which fell through at the last minute. It's hard to tell all your customers that you are in trouble if you're hoping to stay in business, especially when it comes to caring for children.

Did they give a reason for the lack of notice? They may have been trying to avoid any incidents with the staff. Shitty move regardless. I worked in daycares throughout high school, and the things you are not told would suprise you.

You're right sailor, totally. Glad you straightened me out (you were there, of course). How dare I not feel for a wealthy, phony, pseudo-religious, millionaire. Thanks, dude.
Also, way to borrow Ron's "crazy talk" line, you're one of a kind, and your originality is stunning!

you're right, i wasn't there. never pretended to be. i simply asked why you would think it was an act. obviously it's something you came up with way after the fact (based on your words...i thankfully don't know you). there is nothing in your original post to indicate he was "phony, pseudo-religious." why do you think he closed the business? using your answer there, why should he have kept it open?

and i've used "crazy talk" for years. i have definitely lifted some other phrases from the show, but not that one. so what? so have many others here. there are even threads on it.

Never said you pretended to be there, SAILOR. Why is it obvious that I came up with it way (as you say, soooo eloquently) after the fact, if you weren't there???? You know everything, don't you? I'm sure you do. Thankfully. And, of course, you've used "crazy talk" for years, because you're a board PRO, who can't come up with his own catch phrase, so he uses lines he hears from his Roady 2 to try and best someone he "thankfully" doesn't know. Cunt.
