As someone who went to a "liberal" Ivy League school, I can tell you that they are more left leaning, but there are conservatives that go and teach there, AND even the more left students wouldn't view Iran's president as being towards the left. They would equate the Iranian president to be closer to Falwell and Robertson than to the left.

When Bush Sr. went to Yale, it was a far different place than it was in the '60's and after. Then, it was only your bluebloods attending, and a lot more conservative. I'm not agreeing with them, but it is apples and oranges. It's called allowing speech v. allowing recruiting. Columbia isn't allowing Ahmadinejad to set up shop and allow Columbia students to join the Iranian military. That would be apples to apples.

They are letting him do one speech. No one's saying that the school isn't inviting conservatives supporting the US military to speak.

"Most of the Harvard student section, sitting to the placards' left, did not see the placards at all. Many Harvard fans left the stands not knowing what had taken place. Because the "WE SUCK" placard spelling was barely legible from the Harvard side, many Harvard fans did not know they had been duped until days later.

Why don't they want recruiters on campus?

I'm don't know for certain. I'm sure they ban other organizations that seek to recruit on campus. Back in the 1980's, a number of colleges banned certain organizations that provided money to apartheid South Africa from recruiting employees on campus. Obviously, they disagree in some way with the organization -- may be on the treatment of homosexuals.

Regardless, there is still a difference between allowing/banning an organization from recruiting students on campus and allowing/banning individuals/organizations to speak to students on a one time basis, especially when they make it clear that they disagree with the guy and label him a terrorist.

I don't know of a college campus that doesn't have organizations that recruit...whether that be the Chess club, frats, the ACLU, Students for Choice, International Socialist Organization....I'm sure all of these organizations (http://www.columbia.edu/students/org_gov_az.html) recruit...which is the only way that they can continue to exist. So what is the benchmark for deciding which of these organizations if okay to have on campus, and which one isn't?

For me...especially because Columbia has no problem receiving Federal Funding in the amount of hundreds of millions of dollars...it seems hypocrytical that they have their hand out for money from the government, yet don't allow them the coutesy of an ROTC group on campus.

With regard to your question, you'd have to ask a Columbia official.

As for the hypocrisy, eductation and military recruiting really aren't tied together. If they took the money from the U.S. military or Department of Defense, then yes. But Department of Education, I don't think so.
