Hey .netters,

Looking for some advice. I went to the Doc's a year ago and found out my cholesterol was just over 240. Didn't want to start meds, so I tried to control it through diet and exercise. Over the next 6-8 months, I severely restricted my diet, started taking Flax seed for the omega 3's, started exercising regularly and was able to get it down to 199, then to 179 naturally.

When I hit 179, at the beginning of the summer, I thought I could let up a bit on the diet and spent the summer stuffing my head with sausages and hamburgers and surprise, the cholesterol shot up to 240 again, so I am back on the diet.

4 0z's of skinless, boneless chicken breasts, vegetables, rice, a lot of fruit, and so on.

Is anyone else here dealing with this as well? If so, have you come up with any good, healthy meals, low in cholesterol, that actually fill you up? How about healthy snacks?

Problem is, I am used to a 16oz. steak sitting in your belly for hours. These days, I fill up on veggies and rice and 30 minutes later, I'm hungry again. Any advice is much appreciated.

Yours in hunger,
Nate

My cholesterol was (shocker) quite high at my last checkup and I'm getting it checked tomorrow.

I cut out the fast food and started eating a lot more vegetables whenever possible. I also ate sushi practically every night for the last 2 months. So we'll soon find out if this had any positive effect.

a few years ago I got hit with a double whammy, high colesterol and type 2 diabetis. My doc told me the only way I was gonna control both was doing the whole Adkins thing, I was doubtful but went and did it anyway, I can honestly say it does work. My sugar level and colesterol have both dropped into the good (170 col, sugar around 110) all while eating mass amounts of eggs, cheese, and meat. I've heard many doubters but it really works.

Dude, seriously? This seems diametrically opposed to what I've been thinking.

when your body spends its energy's just processing fats and proteins it is more efficiant, at least so I've been told. Your body will always process carbs first because its the quickest source of energy, in so doing lots of fat goes unused and raises the colesterol, again, so I've been told. What I know for a fact is that it works very well for me.

It can be said enough how important fruits and vegetables are to a healthy diet. My dad has cholesterol issues, as did the rest of the males before me, but I've been conscious of this since I was 25. Mrs. Worthy and I never buy red meat, although we do slaughter a lamb every other year. We have the fortune of being able to catch and fill our freezer with the majestic king salmon, which we never get sick of. Whole grains are nice, too. As far as healthy recipes, there are really a million of them out there. I think it's a matter of re-training yourself to enjoy simpler, healthy foods. Also, it sounds like people who live in metropolitan areas tend to eat at restaurants more often, which generally isn't very healthy. The fast food shit really fucks with our concept of what tastes good. I've always been a big fan of the moderation deal. I'll still eat a big mac or a new york, just not all the time.

sushi is great for low cholesterol meals but only if they dont have shrimp, lobster or crab (any shell fish)

Shell fish is the highest cholesterol food to eat. Higher then steaks, bacon, eggs. Nothing is higher. So be careful. Shell fish may be low in fat and calories and have a ton of protein but the cholesterol is what kills you!
