Sweet Jesus, I am in love with this film.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is hands down the most beautiful film I have seen in years. The rest of you here that love Malick's films? GO SEE THIS MOVIE ASAP. It's the best film that Malick never made. Pitt and Casey Affleck are nothing short of revelatory in it, Affleck especially. I say in all confidence that I will not see another film this year that even comes close to how good this one is.
And when I say "beautiful," I mean it in all senses of the word. It's a joy to watch it...it just looks so epic and wonderous and bigger than life. The acting, the dialogue, hell, the colors...everything is rich and everything means something. The music is gorgeous, too, done by Nick Cave (between doing the music here and writing The Proposition, Nick Cave might be singlehandedly brigning back the great westerns) A movie experience this whole, for me, is truly a rare thing.

I love that a movie this good is just adding on to the recent string of excellent westerns. It's such a fantastic and glorious genre when it's done right.

Seriously, Malick/Cave, a thing of Beauty.
Malick, I tell ya, he may only make a movie like once every 10 years or so but when he does it's usually worth the wait.
Oh wait, Malick didn't have a hand in this film? Ok, I just re-read, you confused me!
Cave.. Never has anyone with such a deep no-range voice been able to make such beautiful music.

Heh, yeah, sorry about the confusion...the director is an Aussie, and he's only made on other film, Chopper, which was pretty awesome. But this one...man, it really is similar to the "feel" of a Malick film. It's that great.

I'll have to check out this one. And I've never heard of Cave doing a major film soundtrack before.

I might see it next week (this or Michael Clayon or both if I can sneak in to it). It's that time of year when it's possible to see a new movie every week. I like that, it means I can escape my life.

I loved this movie as well. I think Casey Affleck is going to become a major player in the coming years.

It's one of my favorite books, Sheep. I first read it a few years ago during my first go at college and I've loved it ever since. I'm really not a big fiction reader, but this is one book that really stuck with me.
And you're right about Affleck...he is amazingly good in this movie.
Does anyone know when this is getting a wide release?

Just got back from seeing it and fuck was that a fantastic film. I generally don't even notice scores (unless they're really good or really bad) and what Nick Cave/Warren Ellis did had me riveted alone.

High five, my friend.
I've only seen it through a crappy bootleg several times over, so I'm dying to get into a theater and it see it "for real."

That pretty much sums it up for me as well. A beautiful film, and Casey Affleck should be nominated for an Oscar.

The other aspect of this movie that I loved was the narriation. A narrator is usually hit or miss in a movie, and I can't think of one right now where it worked so well as it did in this movie.
During the movie, I thought it might have been Richard Dreyfuss, but in fact it is an actor names Hugh Ross. (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0743463/) (He is not the voive in the trailer, which is a deeper tone).
I thought it worked so well with the music, and I think it would be great to include the narriation on a sountrack CD, with Nic Cave's music.

Fucking cunts...
On a side note, does anyone know a good DL site cause I know torrent spy is monitored now.

Warren Ellis also scored this movie. The two of them wrote the score for the Proposition as well, and Nick Cave scored John Hillcoat's other movies like Ghosts of the Civil Dead and To Have and to Hold. Mick Harvey helped with these earlier scores, and I believe he scored Chopper on his own. Nick Cave (and the Bad Seeds) have been friends with Hillcoat for years, and he shot some of the old Birthday Party videos. Hillcoat is directing Cormac McCarthy's The Road, which I imagine will involve the music of Cave/Ellis and hopefully Harvey. We'll see The Road in 2009, as well as McCarthy's Blood Meridian, directed by Ridley Scott. It's turning into a good time to be a fan of McCarthy, with No Country For Old Men coming out soon.

Ugh, Ridley Scott adapting Cormac McCarthy? Might as well just pound the book with a sledgehammer.

I liked Alien, Blade Runner.
Me too. Love those two. But everything since? Not so much. He makes some very fine popcorn flicks, but he's basically just a slightly classier version of his brother, Tony. It really hit me when I finally saw Gladiator...style-wise, there's very little difference outside of him and guys like Tony or Michael Bay except for fewer burns and jump cuts and better script choices. Again, he can make very watchable films, but he's totally wrong for adapting books like McCarthy's.

Yeah, my wife loved Gladiator like it was the second time Jesus came, and I can't even remember the last 3/4 of the movie. I'm just happy to see McCarthy anything. And I love bitching when something I like gets ruined by Hollywood, so I can't really lose.

That is great news. The Road is one of my favorite books, and after watching The Proposition, I'd imagine he'd do a fine job of it. Blood Meridian is probably my favorite book, but Ridley Scott doesn't scare me so much, he was a producer on Jesse James, so I'd like to think he'd go with the same feeling for the movie. Time will tell.

AoJJbyCRF came out on DVD this past Tuesday.
I still love it.
I'd put it right behind There Will Be Blood as my favorite film of the year, then No Country For Old Men and then the criminally ignored Zodiac.

Zodiac had a re-release on DVD as well with some great extras and commentary. Yea, one of the best from last year.

Yeah, that deluxe edition is amazing. They really went all out with the extra features...and man, no film looked better than that one. Fincher really is the only director out there that knows how to use CGI as a filmmaking tool.
Finally got a chance to see this film recently, and I freakin LOVED it! Casey Affleck's acting was just so above par to most acting jobs I've seen in recent film, aside from a few, (including Day-Lewis in PT Anderson's "There Will Be Blood, some may say that's not a fair comparison because Affleck was in a supporting role and Lewis in a lead, but oh well), and Pitt did an amazing job as well. I also am in love with the original score, (Cave did an amazing job), and the visuals and cinematography were just beautiful as well. Highly recommended on this side, and now it's on DVD, so more people can check it out. Although, I saw it in the theaters. I find that the theaters for this film would probably just be a better experience for viewing the amazing visuals of this movie. I guess some could argue on the side of HDTVs, but it's just my http://www.guitar.com/uploaded/profile_images/forum_2f455681_two_cents_small.jpg

I've watched this 4 times now since I picked up the DVD a week ago. I haven't seen a film this textured and amazing in years. It's getting robbed at the goddamn Oscars. As much as I was impressed by Javier Bardem, he ultimately just had to play one note the entire film. Casey Affleck is just all over the place emotion and range-wise here, ad it's an incredible performance. I know he's not gonna win, but he should.

What an amazing, beautifully shot movie! I'm just pissed I didn't get a chance to see it in the theater.
