View Full Version : Ron Doing Stand-Up

I don't post a lot so I'm not sure if this has been covered. Ron always talks about the stand-up club he used to own, and I believe I've heard him say he did stand-up before doing the ron and ron show. Is there any footage of him onstage? That would be fucking great. Also, what style of comedy did he do? Lots of crowd work? Heckling? Political?

Just curious.

Thanks

I've often wondered about that myself. I searched Youtube a bunch of ties but was unable to find anything at all. As an avid listener of the show I'm always blown away at how quick he is to come up with a great one liner. I can't imagine that he was anything other than an awesome stand up.

I'm imagining that his stand up is similar to Bill Hicks.

I also have never seen his stand up. I'll search thorugh the 5000 threads to see when it came up...

Isnt there a show on XM where they Unmask stand up comics?

There was a televised show in 1991 that Ron & Ron did from the comedy club in Clearwater, FL.
The show aired locally in the Tampa Bay area going up against SNL.

Sadly I do not have that show on tape.

I've contacted the TV affiliate and one of the comedians who appeared on the show, but neither could help.

If I do ever get a hold of that show, I will most definitely send it to Mikeyboy so he could make it available in the File Library.

I was trolling the web for any sign of Ron Bennington stand-up, which I didn't find, but I did find out the name of his club was "Ron Bennington's Comedy Scene" in Clearwater, FL, which is hilarious.

And then I found this interview with Tom Rhodes (http://www.sheckymagazine.com/rhodes.htm) that seemed strange. I guess they know each other and he just slipped it in, because the magazine makes no reference to it being a joke.

Q. Is there one particular comic from your childhood that had the most influence on you?

A. ... One of the best guys I ever saw was a guy in Florida named Ron Bennington, he greatly influenced me until his tragic death of being eaten by sharks off the Florida coast (the details were never fully disclosed to protect the feelings of his family).

He was the guest in studio when Ron got that mysterious phone call that forced him to end the show early.

When in doubt, check the listening thread for that day's show.

Not that this thread is great to see every so often, but don't you think that if Ronnie wanted his stand-up work available to us, he'd make it available?

I haven't been listening as long as most (just since XM), but from what I hear of old shows I've gotten of both O&A and R&F through the SU it seems like a lot about Ronnie are pretty mysterious and since coming to XM he has opened up a lot of his life that no one ever knew about (whenever Rap comes in he seems to open up).

We are all just followers in the Church of Bennington, we should just be happy with what He gives us, until He decides to give us more.

No, no, no, you're not stup at all.

It was a good question. The problem some have is that it has been asked so many times. People get irritated at that. Not me my lil' friend, I'm here to help.

The closest link to Mr. B performing stand up is this
http://www.teddwebb.com/showcase/where_are_they_now/ron_bennnington.jpg

Other than that, we just have to believe that he did stand up.

GVAC has a theory that Mr. B is no better than Tim Johnson when with the Blue Jays.

Hey, it's GVAC's theory.......

After some thought, I've come up with 2 theories as to why there are no Ron Bennington standup comedy archives:

1. He just didn't make much of a splash, and only really earned his stripes where he achieved his greatest success. ON radio.

2. He performed his comedy under an assumed name.

Thank you

I too wish there was some Ronnie B stuff out there to watch. I can't imagine that he wasn't the best stand-up ever.

Maybe Ronnie is so funny people laugh themselves to death, and he had to give up stand-up for the greater good.

I wish I was funny and enterprising enough to start the Ron Bennington version of the Chuck Norris fun facts. Alas, I am older and lazier than I was 15 years or so ago.
