Watching the coverage of the monk-led protests in Burma has me thinking. Several of the news reports have referred to the Buddhist monks as the most respected or revered members of Burmese society.

Who are the most respected or revered members of U.S. society?

Not politicians...everyone hates them
Not celebrities...they get shit on
Not priests...duh

Doctors?

Firemen?

I do know that our society does not respect intellectuals. So if you've gone to college more than 4 years, you're not going to be respected.

As Ron has said, actors are our true heroes.

7 years of college, down the drain!

I miswrote that. I meant to say if your education is greater than just 4 years of college. But even that sucks.

I'll change it to say, graduate school.

Back in the day, if you had a doctorate or masters, you were respected. No more.

So true. Look at James Stockdale. He was a real intellectual, patriot and warrior and he was shit all over because he was a little kooky in the VP debates. Sure, everyone had a good laugh, but for most people to remember him for that is ridiculous.

This is kind of like asking, "Who are your leaders?", people you really think of as speaking for *you*. I think this is dood ol' American individualism at work.

Anyone see "Beyond Rangoon" with Patricia Arquette? I saw it on IFC or Sundance a few months ago, and then all of sudden, I started seeing Burma in the news.

the majority of america is nothing but a bunch of "me's"
its all about me, f everyone else, my rights trample on yours.

if you wanted to find respect in the us, you would have to go to one of those 1-stop light towns. only there, in close knit communities will you find somebody that is truely respected, and rightfully so.

its a shame. the country is crumbling to corporate greed and "me" syndrome.
