They could come out of the break going:

Santana
Maine
Perez
Pelfrey
Pedro

So you still have Pedro and Santana back to back and you still have a decent R/L split

The main problem i have with that staff is not stuff wise, besides Pedro, who now has borderline AVG stuff, the rest have pretty good to great. But the prob is, none of them go deep into games, Johan is 6 tops 7 on a good day , 8 maybe on a great. Maine Pelfry and Perez throw a shit load of pitches, And Pedro you would take more than 5 and run with at this point. That Pen is going to be really over used and maybe fall apart in mid to late sept.

Thats a problem with all of baseball now and especially a Willie problem. He lived and died by pitch counts.

And after all that our starters have pitched the 5th most innings and our pen is 8th in the NL in innings.

We really need to find an Darren Oliver guy though, Vargas/Armas haven't done the job.

Nice knowing you, Willie
Here's a lowlight that many of you didn't see during last night's broadcast of the All-Star festivities at Yankee Stadium -- former Mets manager Willie Randolph arriving with his wife, Gretchen, as the guests of George Steinbrenner.

While it was nice of The Boss to invite one of his favorite players back, Randolph showed zero respect for any of the writers that covered him during his three-plus years in Flushing -- and more than a decade before that in the Bronx -- by completely ignoring them on his way into the building.

OK, so Randolph is still bitter over his firing. And maybe the fact that the Mets are in the middle of a nine-game winning streak that has them just a half-game out under the guidance of his former bench coach, Jerry Manuel. That's understandable.

But then why even bother showing up at the Stadium, where you know reporters will be waiting to talk to you. And perhaps the worst of it all was Randolph acting oblivious to the half-dozen reporters walking with him through the gate. Not even making eye contact. Simply pretending to hear or see nothing.

There was no "I'm not talking tonight, guys," or "I'm excited George invited me back." Nothing. I've been treated far better by Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and whoever else has been painted a villain in the media. Joe Torre was not thrilled by the way he was dumped by the Yankees at the end of last season, but his dealings with the media have never been affected. He may not always be overjoyed to speak with reporters, but he is always professional. Torre gets it.

Here's a news flash for Willie: None of the beat reporters fired you. I guess we'll all just have to wait for the book -- Randolph signed an exclusive deal last year with Daily News reporter Wayne Coffey -- to know if he enjoyed last night's All-Star tribute to Yankee Stadium.

It's hard to pinpoint what this team will do at the deadline. They don't have much to give up in the ways of prospects, so I don't expect them to land a big name, however they are definitely short on outfield depth. With the unexpected resurgence of Tatis it makes ZERO sense to take him out of the line-up right now, however anyone who has ever watched baseball knows he's probably just as likely to go 0 for the next 21 as he is to continue his hot hitting. I like having Chavez in the line-up because his outfield glove is so phenominal (though he made a bad play yesterday), but I don't think he fits as a 2 hitter.

Part of me just wants them not to do anything with the outfield. There is no telling what you will get out of Church for the rest of the season, but if he returns I could totally live with Church, Chavez, Tatis and Beltran in the outfield, but I think it's a big risk. If Tatis comes back to reality and Church is constantly on the DL that puts a HUGE hole in LF and in a line-up that will already contain Chavez, Schneider and Castillo/Easley that could be dangerous.

As someone who follows the rumor mill pretty closely, the ONLY player in the last two months I've heard the Mets name mentioned with is reliever Brian Fuentes from the Rockies.

And even that doesn't make much sense (assuming they had the goods to pull it off, which they don't appear). That'd give them four lefties in the bullpen. A little excessive.

Ibanez came up, briefly, too, but is another left-handed bat. They need a righty.

I don't think they have the goods to get Xavier Nady or Jason Bay unless they part with Fernando Martinez. I don't think they'll do that.

I know you guys are having a Tatis lovefest right now, but I would honestly be stunned if he:
a) stayed healthy all year.
b) played anywhere close to this caliber for most of the second half.

And Chavez stinks offensively.

Church is decent if they get him back, but they need another, preferably right-handed corner outfielder, and maybe a right-handed reliever.

Not sure they have the goods they can pull off a top notch player at either position.

You may see them take a shot on someone's overpriced garbage that they're trying to dump, since the one thing the Mets can do is absorb salary.

But it's hard to see a significant move for them at this point. They kind of fired most of their bullets with Santana.

The one guy that may be a Wild Card in terms of value is Heilman, if someone wants him as a starter.

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. Chavez is a liability offensively, but he's SO good defensively that it's not as hard to swallow as the liability that Castillo is. If Minaya can magically land Nady without giving up Martinez I'd be very happy, but I seriously doubt that, because as you mentioned they simply don't have enough to get him.

Do you think they'll get enough for Heilman to trade that for Nady?

I would be just as stunned as you would if Tatis continued his production.

K.C.

Do you think they'll get enough for Heilman to trade that for Nady?

Heilman won't get them Nady, and I'm not entirely positive Heilman would get them anything worth the cost of losing him.

A lot of his value I think is contingent on if there's GMs who like him as a potential starter. I know Billy Beane used to, although the moves he's made suggest he's looking to add prospects.

One appealing thing about Heilman, though, is that he's under club control until 2010.

There's not a lot of great fits for the Mets, but maybe a guy like Randy Winn from the Giants who's a switch-hitter and can balance their lineup a little might work.

He'd be a nice veteran addition to the club.

The Mets might be able to pull something like that off. I imagine Winn will be a name that gets thrown around with a lot of teams before the deadline.

good sign - delgado hitting.
bad sign - those replacements in OF can't play defense;
also - Jerry needs to call for more lessons on how to run bases.
as was pointed out by Keith, Cancel almost didn't score in 10th because he didnt take the appropriate lead on attempted DP; Tatis should have followed Beltran when he tried to steal 3rd, etc.

Even though Big Pelf gave up 3 hrs (he had only given up 4 for season), he persevered and gave em 7.

Mets have fly ball pitchers, not good for Philly, but 2 are lefties. the bats need to keep it up.

For a "second rate team", the Mets' TV and Radio presentation is much, much better than the Yankees. The best was Howie and Ed Coleman last year, but their TV crew is awesome. It's Ed Coleman plus Ron Darling (who is lightyears better than Cone but Leiter is pretty good) and Keith Hernandez (who rules)

I'm going to, in Opie speak, 'break down the fourth wall' for a second and ask a legitimate question.

The masochistic side of me drove me to listen to a little WFAN after the game tonight, and look around and kind of gauge the pulse of the Mets fan base.

And I can't understand for a second how anybody can hang that loss on Santana not having the 'killer instinct' to pitch the 9th, yet I've seen and heard it at least two dozen times tonight.

The guy pitched fantastic. Eight innings, two earned runs...you can't ask for much more. If your bullpen can't get three outs with a three run lead, you don't DESERVE to win. No team does.

That loss has nothing to do with Santana.

Yet, he, along with Manuel are getting brutalized by their own fans for this. How can Mets fans NOT like Santana?

You have played brilliant ball in July while the Phils have been at the lowest for the season, and yet, we are still a full game ahead of you, and look out! Here come the Marlins to put you into third.

Most of the people that call in WFAN are fucking retards and they put them on to get a rise out of the listeners. That loss had nothing to due with santana. Sanchez needed to man up, and feliciano needed to be shot.

but I digress. Back to FAN. Most of those people also think that Johan has 200 CGs in his career. They don't know he only has 6 (i believe). And they are always hung up on the money. Which for me is not a big deal because 1) it's not my money 2) we are a NY team. the money doesn't matter

absolutely.
This loss killed me- not because they lost, but it was the same crap we saw last year- bad d, bleeders, and no one in pen to stop the bleeding.

Yes, it would have been nice if Santana demanded the ball, but it was Manuel's call, and no matter what, your Pen needs to hold a 3 run lead vs the bottom of the order.

mets do poorly vs soft tossing Moyer.
I still like the pitching matchup; maybe its time to do to Moyers what they did to Adam Eaton earlier in the year.

HUGE play last night was Wags hustling to beat Victorino at 1b; if he non-chalants the way other Met pitchers have done, it starts to feel like Deja vu.

Im looking for Ollie to pitch good. Ever since Dan Warthen came in, hes been so much better. I know we lost his last start but he didnt pitch bad, he kept the team in the game. We just couldnt put up any runs. Plus Ollie thrives in these big games. If he has a good second half, give him 5/55. Sorta like what Gil Meche got. Hey, someone will give it too him and with Boras as his agent, your not gonna get him cheap. Hes a a power lefty. Teams love that, especially if he becomes consistent. I mean, Id like Sheets next yr b/c he takes over Pedros slot but will they commit the years an money to another pitcher. I would like Santana-Sheets-Maine-Perez-Pelfrey. But if no Sheets, give a young kid in the system a chance.

Ugly shirts, on ugly kids, in an ugly stadium.

Sounds like a winner of a promotion to me!

The only thing they're going to do with Moyer is watch that 75 MPH heat blow by them.
At least you can take one positive today-

Phillies FINALLY scored a run vs Ollie

Jimmy Rollins is sooooooooooo much maturer then Reyes.

Way to show up 2 hours late

And this made me lol

Before leaving, he added a confident assessment of the division race: "(The Mets) find themselves in first place right now. Not too much different than this time last year."

I love that line of thinking. If he thinks we'll blow another 7 game lead, he's insane.

Update: Peter Abraham is reporting via his blog that Phil Coke, a pitcher at Double-A Trenton has been pulled from his game. It’s expected, but not confirmed, that he is one of the players headed to Pittsburgh. I’ve also just learned that Ross Ohlendorf and at least one other player, perhaps two, will be the cost of Nady and Marte.

Wow, if they didn't give up Kennedy, it's a steal.
