GM Theo Epstein told FOX broadcaster Tim McCarver before Saturday's game that the Red Sox will make an effort to deal Manny Ramirez if he his no-trade clause.
We go through this every year with Manny, but the drama that has been stirred up this time around makes it seem a bit more legit. It's highly doubtful a deal could get done in time, but Epstein should get plenty of phone calls in the next couple of days.

Get it done Omar.

Anyone but Fernando, Flores, Tejada or Pena.

No. They have absolutely no leverage.

None.

He's a free agent after the year, hes disgruntled, the team doesn't want him there and no other team has the money or the slot open for him.

We got Santana and a new contract without giving up Fernado, what makes you think Omar would deal him for an aging pending free agent?

A Manny Ramirez for Marlon Anderson swap is obviously beneficial for both sides.

Except the Red Sox are in a three way division race.

So it makes PERFECT sense they're going to deal one of their top bats for third rate Mets prospects.

Where the hell are you getting this info?

The Redsox have said all year that they will pick up his options and they do not need to negotiate with him.

That is the whole problem. Manny wants a new deal and Redsox say they will just pick up the option.

IF Manny gets trade, the Mets are about the last place he would land.

Now, if he walks as a free agent, yeah, I could see him as a Met in '09.

But they have nothing worth anything to trade, save Fernando Martinez.

And if the Red Sox actually shopped Manny
a) They're not going to take just prospects.
b) They can get a better haul than Fernando Martinez.

My guess is he would land in LA, but I really see no shot of the Red Sox doing it in a pennant race.

Every year this rumor creeps up and every year it makes no sense.

why would NY be the last place he would go? He is from Ny and he has a no trade clause and can basically decide where he would want to go. Why would he go to LA?

I don't see it happeneing, but i think he'd welcome a move to NY

The Mets have absolutely nothing to give up that the Red Sox would accept. Their farm system blows.

There's absolutely no way they could pull that trade off.

Manny will not be traded.

But if for some reason, Theo Epstein decides to blow up a team in the midst of a pennant race for some unknown reason, the Dodgers would easily be the best fit.

They've got a ton of prospects (far more than the Mets), they need offense desperately, and they could absorb the salary.

The Red Sox will let him play out and walk, before they trade him for nothing.

That's why I will say for the third time, Manny won't be traded.

Nobody can explain to me how it would be remotely in the Red Sox interest to trade Manny for Martinez. If they were 10 games out...ok, maybe. But it's ridiculous to suggest they're going to give him up for prospects.

(Nevermind, that you believe they'll get Manny without Martinez being in the deal).

The Mets have no MLB ready prospects other than Martinez. They don't have anyone on their MLB team they'd part with...it makes no sense on any level on Boston's end.

Sources said the Mets' No. 1 nemesis, the Phillies, have the best chance to trade for Manny Ramirez because Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel has perhaps the strongest relationship with him of anyone in the majors. Manuel was Ramirez's hitting coach with the Indians from 1994-99 and his manager in Cleveland in 2000, and the two have remained close.

And Towlie.. They hold the 2 options and did not promise him anything

Manny Ramirez is said by a friend to be "very, very frustrated'' over his contract, which includes team options for $20 million for both 2009 and 2010 and gives the Red Sox the power. Ramirez would prefer Boston to either extend him or release him after this year, allowing him to shop himself to all suitors. He is said by some to have his eye on the Angels, whose only obvious need is for another big bat and who may have Vladimir Guerrero coming off the books after the season. An Angels person said they don't expect to make any major changes before the July 31 trade deadline.

Manny Ramirez to the Phillies? The New York Post reported Sunday that the Red Sox view the Phillies as "the best fit" for a potential Manny deal before the deadline. But the Phillies seem to differ.

One Phillies official told ESPN.com there was "no substance whatsoever" to that Manny talk. And while the Phillies have done some bat-shopping (losing out on both Casey Blake and Xavier Nady), they're mostly focused on pitching. And they would only be in the market for a hitter who could play right field.

The Phillies remain interested in both Brian Fuentes and George Sherrill, as well as a number of left-handed set-up men (Jack Taschner, John Grabow, etc.). But it's possible they might not make a trade until the August waiver period, while they try to assess Brett Myers' comeback and Joe Blanton's impact on their rotation. If neither goes as plans, they may opt to shift course and attempt to deal for a starter next

He might be. But my point is the dont have to trade Manny for low prospects because they will get better prospects with the picks they would get. Or pick up option and pay some of his salary and trade him. Like we did with Shef.

As far as trades go, Mets have said Martinez, Neise and Parnell are off limits. People say we got nothing but thats only at AAA. All our prospects are in A and AA. People say Nick Evans stinks but hes never been higher then AA and he hits well there. He could be worth something.

But for what? I understand that we don't know how long Tatis can keep this up, but who besides Matt Holliday is better. Ibanez? Stop it. If they're bent on getting an outfielder it has to be Holliday or nothing and then they have to lock him up. As for the bullpen, same deal. Who's better than what we have. These guys all have flashes of brilliance, but let's face it, relievers are relievers for a reason. They aren't great pitchers, closers excluded. Let's not forget, Fuentes lost his job as closer. Sure he's been outstanding at times, but I wouldn't give up anything in the Mets system for him with the exception of Chris Aguila. I stand by the "Do not trade for relief!" strategy, unless it's a mess, and this bullpen is far from a mess. Bullpens are a go with the hot hand and pray he doesn't fall apart aspect of the team. Don't give up a prospect for somebody a relief pitcher, unless it's a relief pitcher (Muniz, Collazo). I hear people giving the Mets shit all of the time for trading Heath Bell. Sure he's been good for San Diego, but how about two guys who were rated higher than Bell, Henry Owens and Royce Ring. One still isn't in the Majors and one has a 6.75 ERA. Relief pitchers are expendable and if someone wants them, let them go.

The Marlins have Nolasco and Olsen in the first two games, who are statistically better than Maine and Perez.

agree with both-
for OF the key is if Church can come back and be decent; I think a platoon (not strict) of Tatis & Endy would be fine. It's having to fill 2 OF spots that get me nervous.

Maine has a mild shoulder strain. Hmm i dont think a DL stint is needed. Gary is right. With two off days coming on thursday and monday, he wont have to pitch for 10 days. That is ample time off. Its close to a DL stint. No one in the rotation has to miss a start an no one needs to be brought up.

I've been a huge Met fan for a long time, but I want to know who plans on buying these.

(from Metsblog)
“We have received a number of inquiries regarding the dismantling of Shea following the 2008 season and access to purchase memorabilia from Shea. We are pleased to advise that the Mets - in partnership with the City of New York which owns and operates Shea Stadium - are offering you the first opportunity to purchase a pair of YOUR seats from Shea Stadium.

“The cost of the pairs of seats is $869 during this limited-time, exclusive offer.

“Proceeds from the Mets’ share of net revenues generated through the sale of seat pairs will be donated to the Mets Foundation, which will distribute the funds to various charities.”

Um no. If he went out there and pitched a respectable game he would have retired.

He was done after #300. But he has too much competitiveness in him to call it a career after that mess.

Thats why hes trying so hard to get back this year, even if he probably is finished.

Why is it so hard to believe that after gettin fucked so many times, that a guy would get pissed and say fuck you back? EVERYONE does that at some point. Believe it or not, its not like us fans think. this is just a job to these guys, just how its just a shitty job to us. I dont know too many people who wouldnt like to fuck their boss. That doesnt just go for the middle class workers, fool.

Why would Glavine want to fuck the Mets over?

Give me one good reason.

Was it the millions of dollars they paid him?

Was it all the times that the Mets beat him when he was a Brave?

Did the Braves win the NL East because of his loss?

Did they take away his World Series ring and his MVP when he signed with the Mets?

Your conspiracy theory is so awful. The Braves fucked him over so bad when he left. Read John Schuerholz's book.

He told the Phillies to fuck themselves in 2003. Why would he want to help them 4 years later?

He choked. Not because he wanted to fuck the Mets, not because he wanted to be a Brave again. He choked.

He could have pitched 7 innings and gave up 2 runs and lost and went back to Atlanta and people wouldn't care.

To think a professional athlete, especially a guy like Glavine, the players union rep and a guy who was always team and league first would blow up like that on purpose is so fucking dumb I don't know where to begin.

He blew it, but to say he did it on purpose is possibly the dumbest statement in the history of sports message boarding.

Well, don't feel too bad. We'll have our shot at a 3-1 series loss again this year.

I hope we can pull it off, though, because the window may close in '09. After all, the Mets are a nice team with a lot of young talent that's only going to get better with a little more experience.

I mean, right now, Delgado's a very green 36 year old...but when he shows the steady, veteran presence of a spry 37 year old in '09....yikes.

And Fernando Tatis....what a killer call-up. One of the best prospects I"ve seen in years. He's going places!

I dont know, man. The more I watch sports, the more I see guys mail in shit and openly seem not to care during the game. Especially when at the end of a deal in a place they know they arent staying. And it was obvious to me during his performance that he really didnt give a fuck what happened in that game. He has his ring and knew he was outta there. So he didnt give a fuck. and Im not making shit up. Im telling you I, and I know of a good 20 other people, remember seeing a shot of Glavine sitting on the bench with a sick sort of smile. Runs batted in is the key for better hitters?

Odd, I didn't know Howard or Delgado controlled who got on base in front of them to drive runs in.

Runs batted in is the definition of team based stat. Delgado was hitting 5, 6 or 7 for the better part of the year while Howard was batting 4th.

On base percentage and slugging percentage is clearly the inferior stat compared to RBIs.

Howard has 97 solo homers this year. My bad.

Delgado batted 5th most of the year. Yeah, 5th in the lineup guys don't drive in runs...

And when you bat 4th or 5th, they pay you to DRIVE IN RUNS.

I don't care if Ryan Howard strikes 800 times when no one is on base....who the fuck in the Phillies lineup batting 7th and 8th could drive him in anyway??...Go ahead, big man...let it fly!

When guys set the table for him, he drives them in.

And that's born out by the .321 average and 66 RBI with RISP...the .319 average with RISP w/ two outs, and the .290 average and 78 RBI with runners on, period.

That's his job, and he does it.

Justify Howard all you want, but no one who is baseball intelligent would take Howards seasons so far over Delgados.

Howard has a .776 OPS on the road. He's a beneficiary of a bandbox. Its that simple.

Outside of that shitbox he's a below average player.

You give Delgado 82 games in CBP he'd hit 50 every year.

But I know OPS is a dumb stat. Its just so silly.

Just like EVERYONE would take Howard's 2006 over Delgado's.

And Howard will be Top 3 in MVP voting this year, and Delgado will be non-existent.

I'll give you that he didn't care, but I dont think any professional athlete is satisfied by a disaster.

I can see him pitching 6 innings of 2 run ball and saying I did my best and blah blah

But he didn't want to walk off the field like that, especially with no guarantees that he was going to come back

The Mets could have picked up his option and fucked up his plan to go back to Atlanta

2006 Home
SLG: .656
OBP: .422

2006 Away
SLG: .661
OBP: .427

2007 Home
SLG: .580
OBP: .384

2007 Away
SLG: .588
OBP: .399

2008 Home
SLG: .544
OBP: .361

2008 Away
SLG: .476
OBP: .300

There is a notable difference this year, for the first time.

But when you combine that with the fact that he hits .322 with RISP, and .198 with the bases empty...the numbers aren't as meaningful.

He does his job when he has to.

Meanwhile, Delgado is .239 w/ RISP, .269 w/ runners on base, .250 w/ bases empty.

Howard's OBP is .50 higher with RISP, and his SLG is nearly 100 points higher.

Delgado's OBP is .20 lower with RISP and his SLG is .50 lower.

(Howard's numbers overall are higher with RISP).

So Howard gets the job done w/ RISP...Delgado...not as much.

NOW, if I"m anchoring a guy in the middle of the lineup, as the force of my offense. Do I focus primarily on OPS with no one on base?

Or, do I maybe give A LOT more weight to what my #4 or #5 hitter does with RISP.

The Phillies have 2 more @ LA, then 3 @ SD, 3 vs. Wash and then 4 more with LA before our 2 game set with them

We have 2 @ Was, 3 @ Pit, 3 vs. Atl and 3 vs. Hou in that time.

So if we can go 7-4 or 8-3 in that time span I would like to think we'd be back in first before that series.

But this season has been so inconsistent I don't know what to guess.

Wags should be back on Monday and Maine is back tonight so hopefully things will be more stable.

Church might be back for the Atlanta series, but who knows

I think Jerry's still gonna mix and match. I still don't understand why they didn't just put Kunx in there immediately. He knows the job and opponents don't know his stuff yet. No one else would have had to been effected unless he struggled. Hope he gets a chance tonight.

I can't believe were 1 game out. This is torture.

i know every time they lose a few and i feel like giving up on them, they go and win a few and reel me back in

its ponderous... effing ponderous

Stokes looked sick. I don't care if it was the Nats. Beat up a crappy offensive team, build some confidence and go from there.

It's ok, Chip gets confused sometimes. He was called a "cunt" once and he thought he was being praised, so now he shouts it out whenever he's excited. Just be glad you weren't at his wedding. Awkward.

done, thanks to him and Kemp.

this from ESPN fast facts:
• This was the Dodgers' first sweep of the Phillies in a four-game series since 1962.

• Philadelphia has lost five of its last seven games.
