TODAY IS A GREAT DAY! First, the Phillies clinched the NL East for the first time in 14 years! YESSSS!!!
AND NOW THIS!!!
Hello everyone.
Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days;
We've called it In Rainbows.
Love from us all.
Jonny
Yup, that's right. A new Radiohead album, out October 10! Nice surprise, huh? It's called In Rainbows, duh. And it appears that Radiohead have chosen to not sign with a record label and are releasing it themselves via their website, at least for now.
And that's probably the least crazy aspect of this whole thing.
You can pre-order it from their website right now as a download or a "discbox." What's a discbox? Why, it's pretty sweet:
"THIS CONSISTS OF THE NEW ALBUM, IN RAINBOWS, ON CD AND ON 2 X 12 INCH HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL RECORDS.
A SECOND, ENHANCED CD CONTAINS MORE NEW SONGS, ALONG WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND ARTWORK.
THE DISCBOX ALSO INCLUDES ARTWORK AND LYRIC BOOKLETS.
ALL ARE ENCASED IN A HARDBACK BOOK AND SLIPCASE.
THE ALBUM DOWNLOAD AUTOMATICALLY COMES WITH THIS PACK."
Daamn, that's awesome! And even though the discbox doesn't ship until "on or before" December 3, you can get the download starting October 10.
But what's the catch? It costs £40.00 including postage-- no matter where you live in the world. Which for us Yanks means about $81.00. Of course, this is Radiohead we're talking about, so money is no object, right? Right.
And lest you think Radiohead are ripping their fans off, check this out: If you order the download only, you can pay HOWEVER MUCH MONEY YOU WANT for it. Like, there's no set price. Like, I just paid eight bucks for the new Radiohead album. Maybe you can pay zero dollars?
Check out the tracklist:
CD one and vinyl:
01 15 STEP
02 BODYSNATCHERS
03 NUDE
04 WEIRD FISHES/ARPEGGI
05 ALL I NEED
06 FAUST ARP
07 RECKONER
08 HOUSE OF CARDS
09 JIGSAW FALLING INTO PLACE
10 VIDEOTAPE
CD two and vinyl:
01 MK 1
02 DOWN IS THE NEW UP
03 GO SLOWLY
04 MK 2
05 LAST FLOWERS
06 UP ON THE LADDER
07 BANGERS AND MASH
08 4 MINUTE WARNING

So I gotta wait until December if I want an actual CD? Weak sauce.

I agree with mojo. Is there no value in actual collectors any longer?

This is merely a move to prevent any internet leaks. The album will still be released in December. I for one rely on leaks :)
Since I have a player that cannot play DRM infected files, i will probably have to go with the ol' internet piracy.

No, a deluxe "set" costing $80 bucks will be released in December.
That said, I have little doubt that a "normal" CD version will be released between now and then. They're without a label now, so it's likely just a matter of finding one they like and can handle the demand to actually release it. I'll still pay for the download because this whole thing is so fucking awesome and really the ultimate "fuck you" to the major record companies, most of whom are likely shitting their pants right now. This is both the most badass and nerdiest rock 'n' roll thang...EVER.

From what I've read, the download version will be DRM-free.

I just saw reports that it will be out in 2008, but nothing is set until they find a label to distribute it.

I paid £5 for mine.
Of course, with this weak-ass dollar, I probably just cleared out my checking account. Oh well.
This is such a fucking incredible idea, and I think anyone who, likes me, thinks the RIAA is pure fucking evil and the recording industry deserves to die screaming should get in on this. Show that an alternative method of distributing music will work. We don't need dickheads in expensive suits shoving bullshit on us anymore.
And it's Radiohead. You know this is going to kick ass.

*bought*
i did £ 1.90
small, but i wanted to support what they are trying to do. i dont even
listen to radiohead but wanted to buy it since the riaa is suing and winning for their own good, this way the band actually gets the money, i think.

So did anyone else get it?
I have been listening to it for about the last hour, pretty much my first run through. I have become stuck on track 7, my favorite of the album so far. It reminds me of the music played in the background of a WB teen drama sex scene. But that's not a bad thing, I am on my fourth repeat of it so far.
Overall (at least up until track 7) this cd is pretty subdued and very listenable. I see this as being more of a late night relaxing cd or just something to chill out to.

Got mine for £1.45.
Listening to it right now.
I'm diggin' it.
Very electronic. A nice stripped down sound like the last couple of records.
Best $2.96 I've spent on an album in a long time.
I preordered it but i'm waiting for my download link

Might be because everyone is waking up now and downloading it all across america, overloaded perhaps. I got mine before 7am, I bet those of us got in before it got hammered.

At 8:30am EST...The 48.4Mb Zip file took about 90 secs to download via High Speed Cable.

They are offering the album for any price you want. If you want it for free I believe they will give it to you for nothing. So there's nothing evil about getting it for free.
Downloading free from a third party is so 2006. 2007 brings music at your own price.

It's a great album. It really seems to advance the experiments in electronic music that they made with Kid A and Amnesiac better than Hail to the Thief did, and has some really affecting music. My favorite song so far is "Bodysnatchers".

I just downloaded it last night and listened to it today.
I like the sound of it a lot but haven't had a chance to really liten to the words since I was so sleepy.
I don't know why i even posted if I didn't have a real opinion yet...
