can anyone point me in the direction of some classic bob newhart? never heard oif him over here

The Buttondown Mind of Bob Newhart was great. Most of his standup was fabulous...the King Kong bit is representative of his style.

He did say:

My point is, I don't think it takes too much digging to see the similarities. Hell, my wife wasn't a big fan of QL, but as soon as she saw the trailer for the show her first comment was "Wow, sounds just like Quantum Leap."

I don't think anyone would dispute that they had similarities, because they surely do. Our point is that QL also shares similarities with a host of other time travel stories, and while it had some original points, it had a buch of similarities. Same with Journeyman.

Also, your second post on this subject does says that you 100% agree that it is a "QL ripoff."

as much as i want to say that i want to be buried alive - i would say eaten alive for the fact that i would be freakin myself out and thinking about everything i have ever done wrong. being eaten alive i wouldn't have time to think - plus, i would hope the animals would know what they are doing and break my neck or something

Again - I didnt say a blatant ripoff.. but here's my point:

Time Tunnel
"and each week coincidentally found themselves at the site of an important historical event, be it the Siege of Troy, the sinking of the Titanic or an assassination attempt on President Lincoln."

That's nothing like QL other than the use of time travel.

Voyagers!
They were repairing inconsistencies in the "correct" timeline which involved going back in to times such as Moses, Cleopatra, etc. I really wouldn't compare that to QL either (well, other than when it went to shit in the last season or so with the evil time traveller) :)

But I'm splitting hairs really. I definitely say Time Tunnel isn't that similar to QL, but Voyagers! is much closer.

"sort of" - but still fairly close. But STILL, it's a good show :)

Last point on this, I swear. I'm not looking for a flame war here.

Time Tunnel - Have you ever watched the show? The 2 lead characters were thrown into historical events and often ended up "filling in" for whoever was supposed to be there "originally." Example: They were at the Battle of Jericho and served as Joshua's 2 spies that Rahab helped to escape. Very similar to QL.

Voyagers - although Sam didn't jump through time as himself, he jumped through time to fix "inconsistencies" that ziggy/God/whoever thought should be fixed. A lot of similarities there too.

As Eli has said repeatedly - time travel and "fixing past wrongs" is not a new concept. There have been many shows and movies over the years that follow a similar premise.

Saying "one show rips off another" is a failing argument. You will almost always find something earlier that plays on a similar idea.

Also, your second post on this subject does says that you 100% agree that it is a "QL ripoff."
It does? Here's my second post on this subject:

I still don't get your point. There are more similarities than just time travel. The act of going back in time (whether in your own body or someone elses) repeatedly to follow different people's personal lives to change it for the better to help humanity as a whole. Using time travel to change something is what EVERY time travel show is about. I think there are more similarities than just "time travel."
I don't see me calling it a rip-off there at all.

I thought we were just having a civil discussion about this :)

Time Tunnel - Have you ever watched the show? The 2 lead characters were thrown into historical events and often ended up "filling in" for whoever was supposed to be there "originally." Example: They were at the Battle of Jericho and served as Joshua's 2 spies that Rahab asked to escape. Very similar to QL.
It is? What episodes of QL did I miss where Sam jumps into important historical characters during major historical events? That's what I thought was genius about QL. It wasn't about important things everyone has heard about, it was about fixing the lives and making things better for all kinds of people across all walks of life.

Voyagers - although Sam didn't jump through time as himself, he jumped through time to fix "inconsistencies" that ziggy/God/whoever thought should be fixed. A lot of similarities there too.
I already agreed in my previous post that there were a lot more similarities with QL and Voyagers rather than Time Tunnel.

Saying "one show rips off another" is a failing argument. You will almost always find something earlier that plays on a similar idea.
Again, if you'll read my orginal post, I said "sort of a ripoff." I.e. the show is very similar to QL - and IMHO much more similar than Time Tunnel, Voyagers or any other Time Travel TV show I've ever seen (and yes, I've seen a lot of them including a few episodes of Time Tunnel and Yoyagers)

But most importantly, this is my opinion and not stated as fact.

Well, there was the episode where Sam jumped into Lee Harvey Oswald and the Secret Service Agent trying to change history and save Kennedy (although he was really sent back to save Jackie).

And in Time Tunnel they didn't always pose as historical figures, although it happened occasionally.

And overall, I think we are "arguing" different points. You are going with personal opinion and we are going with "the show isn't a 'ripoff' of QL." No big whoop.

Oh, and that song was garbage.

And as I said, they didn't always become part of major historical events in Time Tunnel. Example: They were just "there" for the eruption/explosion of Krakatau.

There were also several other episodes where they were just visiting a time period and trying to avoid getting maimed or killed until the people in the control center could make them jump.

And along those lines, they were "stuck" in the timestream and couldn't find a way home - just like Sam Beckett was. The scientists in the control room in "our time" could view what they were doing and sometimes communicate, but they kept jumping the guys through time trying to get them home.

The first song needs a little tighter harmony though, for some reason it sounded off. But things like that also add to the raw, real quality of the song. At the end, they determined that he went there to save Mrs. Kennedy, because she originally got shot.

I already said that. Quit ripping off my arguments!

Either way, I can never get enough time travel shows, similar or not :) And as Ronnie B said, odds are it'll most likely get canceled. I also like "Chuck" (dunno why, maybe because that chick is so hot) - anyone watch it and catch how Chuck mentioned Oceanic Flight 815 being shot down? (an NBC show mentioning a Lost reference? Ballsy!)

I'm hoping that if NBC drops it from their network lineup, they will at least shift Journeyman over to Sci-Fi Channel or USA. I think it would do really well on either network (especially Sci-Fi), and it would take a much smaller viewership to make it a hit.

Hell, if they gave a greenlight to that POS Flash Gordon series they need to find a way to keep Journeyman going.

That show is god-awful. The first episode wasn't bad, I missed a couple, then I caught a part of a show involving some hawk people flying or something terrible and never turned back. Ugh. I could think of a lot of shows that should come to the SciFi network over that Flash Gordon crap. Anyone ever see Odyssey 5? Awesome show, killed by the idiots at Showtime and should be picked up by SciFi (although it wouldn't be the same without all the cursing).

I'm still pissed at SciFi for essentially ditching Farscape for Stargarbarge (sorry, I know some of you guys liked it). The only things I'll watch on there are Battlestar Galactica and Dr. Who.

Hehe - I liked SG-1, it was an incredible show IMHO.. but then they had to spin it off? And they're getting ready to debut yet another one? Too far. Battlestar Gallactica rules, just wish they'd hurry up and bring it back.

I've only watched a couple of episodes of it, and I couldn't take it. I even watched it when Ben Browder and Claudia Black came on, hoping that I'd like it. Just couldn't like it.

Is the sci-fi talk winding down, or should I spin it out to s separate thread?

I like Stargate too, but it was a crime that they canceled Farscape. However, I will admit the the storyline may have gotten a little difficult to follow if you weren't a regular viewer. I think they probably lost the "occasional viewer" somewhere in the middle of season 3.

At least they got to wrap things up a little with the mini-series. That made me feel a lot better.

Also, I heard a rumor that "webisodes" were on the way, but i haven't heard any solid details about the project.

Actually, just found a little more info on the webisodes on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farscape):

On July 15, 2007 it was announced that Farscape would return in ten webisode installments. The episodes are expected to be a few minutes long each and may eventually be broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel. The webisodes may be launched as early as fall 2007.

In an interview with TV Guide, Brian Henson stated that the webisodes will be 3-6 minutes long and may feature D'Argo Sun-Crichton. TV Guide also reported that Ben Browder is in talks to appear in the webisodes. Sci-Fi Wire reported that Brian Henson and Rockne O'Bannon will pen the episodes.

Several news sources have reported that the web series may lead to an on-air revival of the series, but Sci Fi general manager Dave Howe says that there are currently no plans to revive the show. Brian Henson has stated that he hopes the webisodes will lead to a TV sequel

*board gossip voice* Sssssshhhhhh....

I'm actually listening to the capped stuff I missed and right now they're talking about Close Encounters and the SciFi stuff. So aren't I technically listening to the show and posting on topic? :) (I missed the parts just after the Journeyman mention)
