add Glen Beck to that list....he's always gotta compare everything to "his" past! it's like the sports guys who say;"when I played"...ecchhh!

Glen Beck does not bother me that much, i don't listen to him all the time but the few times i did i did't have a problem with him.

Yeah it's double thick newspaper day here. Not to be a homer but I think we can handle a bunch of injuries tonight, teams' 4 lines strong again this year. And I can see another slow start for the leafs this year, these back to back openers kinda kill their confidence.

Ynow what I hate, playin nhl 08, thinkin I got it easy when the rangers or flyers come to town but then there's drury, there's briere.. I'd rather you kept em.

LaRouche has some good points but he is a raving lunatic. If he weren't a nutjob overall, there are many points of his platform I could get behind. Not all points, but some. (example: renewal/improvement of the national railway system).

EDIT: OK, I based that statement on his platform from 8-10 years ago. I just checked his site and there is a lot less I agree with now. "Biofuels are an Attack on the US?" WTF? Coo-coo!

I thought that would be considered retroactive birth control:laugh:

I am not fucking with you, but you want better trains?

Yes - for both transit and the transport of goods. One of the worst decisions this country ever made was to let the national railway system fall fallow. Trains are a more efficient way to transport goods over long distance and overall create less pollution (and could create even less if the trains and rail system were upgraded).

Now we have truckers doing long-haul routes, polluting the environment, and wasting tons of resources. Improve the railway system and you can transport goods over long distances more efficiently - and we would still need truckers, but they would have far shorter routes and use fewer resources.

Also, wouldn't it be great to have a viable alternative to driving or flying? Europe, Japan, and many other places around the world use their railway systems extremely effectively. People and goods get almost anywhere they want with less hassle and with a smaller "eco-footprint."

Plus, our current rail system is EXTREMELY vulnerable to terrorist attack. Literally, one or 2 small bombs in the right places would CRIPPLE railway commerce and travel. That would cascade into almost every other area of transit and shipping.

All of which is the function of private industry, not the government. why do liberals scream that government should stay out of peoples' bodies and bedrooms but not their industry?
government needs to stay the FUCK out.

I agree with you to a point, but a lot of the infrastructure was already there but was either dismantled or left to "rot." Besides, the US government pulled the railway system out of private hands decades ago. It's their fault it has gone to pot, so it's their responsibility to help rebuild it.

What I am talking about is looking at rail lines the same way as you do roads/highways - roads are not maintained by private industry. For that matter, they FAA has dominion over sky traffic and safety requirements. The same can/should have been done for the railway system.

Plus, there is no way you can say that other forms of transportation are not subsidized by the government. The biggest example is the airline industry - the Federal government has saved their collective ass numerous times.

I'm saying it would be better for everybody to improve and expand the railway system nation wide. There is plenty of room for private business, but the government currently has control of the reigns. We will just have to create a new, workable system.

Just because I know what a heel is doesn't mean I have to like them. I understand they are acting like an ass because they choose to and want attention, but I don't particularly like people who act like asses.

And I am not overtly mad at the world - I am mad in a "hatter" sort of way.

EDIT: You know, Perrynoid and I would probably get along "in real life" if the way he acted on the radio/no radio didn't bug me so much, I didn't say anything, and you didn't throw it in my face.

it is this way, but it shouldn't be. just because it would be better to expand the rail system doesn't mean that it is therefore incumbent upon the government to do it. it would be even better for everyone if instead of direct subsidy, the government would establish a system in which private industry is given incentives to clean up the infrastructure mess. if it makes people feel better, there could be minimal oversight, but in general when you leave a job to the government they are going to fuck it up. amtrak is the perfect example of this.

Again, i agree - even more so than your previous post. However, there would need to be some kind of standardized oversight similar to the FAA or NTSB.

Competition really is the way to go, but I see it being very difficult to get private industry to pony up for infrastructure improvements without substantial incentives or subsidies by the Federal government. There are still parts of the country where men have to sit in small shacks beside the railroad tracks and manually change the rails. And these aren't "side routes" they are major lines.

Shortly after 9/11 the news started talking about the railway system as a prime target because it could be disabled so easily. That is what brought the issue to my attention.

BTW - I am not a "liberal" as you stated in your first post. If anything I am a moderate, because my views don't fit into either viewpoint. I'm more of a "Determined Realist."

Perhaps, I should not have said anything about TRAINS. Wow!!! I had a train set when I was a kid, so I know alot about trains and the advantages and disadvantages of train travel for commerce or other uses.

 Yeah, thanks a lot for roping me into a multi-hour defense of my belief that revamping the US railway system would be good for the country.

Don't worry, i still think you are a good guy.
