Alright, it's time for a face off, a chance to show just where you stand.

Wes Anderson v Coen Bros.

Vote and defend.

(my opinion: Never mind Raising Arizona and Fargo, Wes Anderson hasn't made a movie half as good as Barton Fink. Caveat: I haven't seen Darjeeling Express yet.)

Coen brothers, no question.

Coens is my choice , better movies

but Having Bill Murray the Wilsons, Anjelica Houston and Jason Schwartzman as your Franchise Actors makes it extremely close

Choosing which core of actors is better would be harder

I'm Cohen with the Cohens.

Millers Crossing is just so perfect for me, I'd watch it over any of Anderson's movies.

No contest on this one. I don't think I've even rewatched Rushmore. Coens. FTW

WEs Anderson is a little TOO precious for my tastes. Like his movies but one viewing is usually enough.Coen Brothers I can watch over and over and never get sick of them. Fargo-Raising Arizona-Millers-Crossing Need I say more

You essentially stole my thunder with your post - Although I like Wes Anderson's movies enough, I don't frequently re-watch his movies. I get the point the first time through, usually enjoy the experience, and move on.

However, with most Coen Brother's movies I will watch them any chance I get. "Raising Arizona" and "Oh Brother..." are particular favorites. However, I don't really care for "Fargo". It's not because of the story, I just can't stand the Minnesota accent - it grates me to the bone.

Desert Island. You can only chose one.
Wes Anderson
Coen Bros.

So, I'm choosing which one I want on a desert island with me? Having 2 Coen brothers would be more competition for scant food and water. But having 2 other people would be more company. Am I choosing between Wes Anderson and both of the Coen brothers, or do I have to select just one of them?

Am I taking this too literally?

Coen Brothers.

I'm sorry.

And to clarify, a normal Minnesota accent isn't horrible, but the exaggerated accents they use throughout the movie drive me nuts. Hell, even Ron's "Ooohhh and Aaayyy" bit drives me batty.

I like the Minnesota and North Dakota accents, even exagerated. The accents I really can't stand are Southern Jersey and Long Island.

I think the accent was exaggerated, but not ridiculously so much so. Having grown up in central Minnesota, I heard folks with similar accents. You always hear "ja","ja sure", "you betcha", "you know" or "gel" (with a hard "g"). My grandma sounded like it alot, and my mom sounds a lot like Marge on Fargo.

Coens. Not even close.

I love Anderson's films, but the Coens are by far my favorite American directors besides Peckinpah. Anderson's films are great, but he is definitely "limited" to his very specific style...it's unlikely he's ever going to really branch out beyond anything that doesn't immediately "feel" like a Wes Anderson film...which is fine. His films are ultimately very intimate and character-driven, so as long as he and the writers he works with can keep coming up with distinct characters, there's no real reason for him to break out of his style. The Coens, on the other hand, have basically mastered every genre of film except for the war film...and while they have their obvious writing and shooting trademarks, their films are marked by much more of a "universal" style and patience and classical elegance. The only other contemporary American filmmaker that I think even comes close to how good and unique they are is the other Anderson, Paul Thomas.

Oh and I went with the Coen brothers as well. And I'll throw up a reason that no one else has. The Coen movies span more different genres than Anderson has. Whether it's neo noir (Blood Simple), straight out comedy (Raising Arizona ), romantic comedy (Intolerable Cruelty), gangster (Miller's Crossing), or those that can't be easily placed (Fargo fits several different genres).

Anderson hasn't done that. To be fair, he hasn't been at it as long as the Coen's, but I think it's still valid.

EDIT: Looks like Mojo had the same point.

The Coens, no contest. I enjoy Wes Anderson movies. I absolutely love the Coen brothers' movies.

I'm Cohen with the Cohens.

Millers Crossing is just so perfect for me, I'd watch it over any of Anderson's movies.

You know what though? I've always been a little surprised by the amount of love the Ron & Fez community showers on Miller's Crossing. It's a really good movie, but I don't think it would even rank in my top five Coen movies. Gabriel Byrne's performance keeps me from considering it a masterpiece.

Wes Anderson is a little more shakey with his writing, but the Cohen brothers are more willing to do disposable projects. Still though, the Auteurism of the Cohen brother's is more realized and tested over different genre's, whereas Wes anderson really only makes wes anderson movies.
Barton Fink is a flawless movie. Flawless.

Since the Coens have been at it longer, let's see what an equivalent comparison would be. Anderson's first six movies are( I know Darjeeling is just coming out -- and maybe no one's seen it, but it's here:)

The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Hotel Chevalier (2007)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Rushmore (1998)
Bottle Rocket (1996)

The Coen's first six movies were:

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
Barton Fink (1991)
Miller's Crossing (1990)
Raising Arizona (1987)
Crimewave (1985)
Blood Simple. (1984)

It's closer now, but still the breadth of the Coen's work even within this range is still better than Anderson's.

I love both of their movies, and this would be a very difficult decision, but i would have to go with wes anderson. His sensibility more fits my personality. I watch his movies over and over and find new things everytime, there's a kind of saddness in his films that i love.
