I recently used a phrase when speaking to a group of people and was called to task on my choice of words.
"Blowing smoke up your skirt"
It seemed pretty innocuous to me.

Don't you have something better to do?
I noticed the 'spoiler' function does not work when you hover over the title thread.
Fix it, and fix it now.

I'd say no but the context is not there.

"I think Dane Cook is the funniest guy ever... "

Oh come on now you're just "Blowing smoke up your skirt"

OR

"I was raped as a child"

Oh come on now you're just "Blowing smoke up your skirt"

Ehh...

I had the same typa scenario where I was offended by their taking offense.

40-50ish guy in my office whom I can hold a normal conversation with, ie joke about everyones misfortunes, constantly berating people in a lowlife fashion, y'now being myself.

Well we were joking about him getting caught stealing office supplies and I used the phrase "caught red handed". Well conversation ends, immediately storms off so I ask what's the problem? Well apparently, it's degrading to native-americans, he being one of those people. It's one of those expressions I've used many times without even thinking of the literal meaning.

Whatever. Native people need to be more tolerant of our ignorance, he was a prick for making a scene.

You should have offered him a toke of the ol' peace pipe.

Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode.

he was also wrong to assume (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/caught-red-handed.html) it was about his race. maybe if he was scottish he should have been upset. throw it in his face.

Thank you Sailor, I would have never doubted "red handed" referred to the "red man" when called upon. I never thought to look it up. I read the article and although it'll be incredibly hard to explain the real meaning, I'll be sure to force a "caught red handed" into our next awkward convo.

just cut to the chase and say it's from being caught with blood on your hands after a murder (unless you live in africa, i'd skip the poaching portion...people just don't poach here anymore). glad i was able to help a bit.

Few groups take umbrage as well as anti-smokers.

Unless you were talking to a group of Scots. They like to call them "kilts" not skirts. No one knows why.
