View Full Version : Almost arrested!

I did something stupid while in a supermarket today. Essentially I stole a bottle of Tylenol and a bottle of water too. I had been out all morning in the sun and was exhausted and thirsty had a massive head ache. I know it is no excuse, and I didn't want to wait to buy the Tylenol to start taking it because I was going to be shopping for a while, but once I opened the bottle, I put it in my pocket and tossed the box.
When I finished paying for my other items and was leaving the store, I was nabbed. They had me come with security into a room and they had all these monitors with different angles of me on them and you can see me putting the bottle in my pocket. They said it is too late to try and pay for it. I explained myself, and they guy was nice and said that because I was cooperating that I was not going to be arrested. But he did take my photo and a copy of my license and had me sign some papers that basically said I was caught stealing, and then they "fined" me $80 and said I could go. It was just the security guy and another guy.
I was shitting a brick!
Weather what happened was wrong or right for them to do is not what I am concerned with. I was worried I'd get arrested and possibly lose my job somehow, so I went along with it.
Could I still get in trouble somehow? They have my name and license number.?

You lucked out. Most security guys in stores with that kind of equipment wont let anyone go, in my experience. However, in rare instances, taking your photo and having you sign an admission statement which is also a trespass order usually, meaning you cant ever enter the store again, is cool.
However, the $80 fine is kinda weird... but maybe in smaller towns somewhere, the police allow security personnel to do that. Not in nyc though.
Whats with throwing the box away? Ive used products in stores before, but as long as you keep the container and remember to pay for it at check out, its ok. You really have to search for a garbage can, dontcha?

Sounds like just a warning to me. They tried to scare the shit out of you, and it worked. I would just avoid that store for a while.

They said they would just keep the info "in that room", but do you think they could still have me arrested?
I was very apologetic and sincere. I know that the thing could have turned on me in a second if I gave an attitude, so I went with my tail between my legs.
I wont go back there for a loong time, but it's a shame because I love shopping there.
What will happen to my information?

Its a common practice. Itll just stay on file in the office. If you show up again, and they recognize you (your pic may even be on their wall of shame), you can get arrested for trespassing.

If you weren't arrested then, you won't be now. When I did Loss Prevention work, I usually didn't prosecute for under $100 unless the person didn't have ID or was violent. The only other thing would be civil liability. In New York we would go after the people for up to 3Xs the amount of what they stole. It was a dead end job for me, but lots of fun.

It got ten times worse when I left that room! LOL
My face was so red! I felt like such an ass. I have been replaying it over and over in my mind all day. I thought I was gonna puke in there!

I didn't have the cash to pay the $80, so I charged it. The receipt has "civil recovery" on it.
Will the credit card company know what I did? Am I being paranoid? Thanks

Hold on to the receipt for the $80. You never know if something will get screwed up and come back to haunt you.

Sounds like you're done.
Your credit card company won't know shit.
The only other thing would be a trespass warning. We used to ban people from the store for a year. You'll be in the database, so don't go back and eat a Slim Jim and chug a YooHoo without paying for it first.

I was going to say that the $80 sounded like they needed lunch money, but if you paid by Visa I guess it's on the up and up.
People at the credit card company might know what it means but I doubt there's anything they can do about it even if they wanted to. People pay for far more disgusting and interesting things by credit card, so why would they be interested in your business?

LOL funny post just because of how paranoid your being. Keep the receipt and stay the hell away from the store.
If I was in the store and saw you walking out of the office I would have just assumed you had been fired. LOL :help:

Good thing you didn't try to steal a doughnut and then push someone on your way out in Missouri!
