Police track down deputy who stormed party, killed six people (http://edition.cnn.com/2007/US/10/08/wisconsin.shooting/)
The reason for the thread title, is because Chris is online. The "cop" was a 20 year old hick.
A 20-year-old off-duty sheriff's deputy shot and killed six people at an early-morning party before dying under circumstances that remained officially under wraps Sunday night, officials said.
<!--endclickprintexclude-->Tyler Peterson, a sheriff's deputy, shot and killed six people, police said. Forest County Sheriff's Deputy Tyler Peterson, who also worked part-time as a Crandon police officer, stormed into a home where a party was going on and opened fire, friends of the victims told CNN. School Superintendent Richard Peters told The Associated Press that three local high school students were killed and another three who died had graduated within the past year.
After a manhunt lasting several hours, Peterson was tracked down by his fellow officers.
Fucking terrible!
Again... This can't be compared to other types of police related incidents.

a little thing called the right for the families to know all the details before we do thru the press.
this is an awful incident; my GUESS is since he was really about their age that it was an ex girlfriend or someone who spurned his advances. And that he committed suicide as well.

Good guess on the girlfriend thing. I saw that on another link. As for the suicide...
Dennee would not say how Peterson died. But Crandon Mayor Gary Bradley said the assailant had been brought down by a sniper, AP reported.

Nope. This is a tragedy. Six kids dead ages 16-21. It's just a "coincidence" the media is shoving down our throats that the shooter is a sheriff's deputy. He didn't shoot these people because he's a cop. He shot them because he went psycho after an argument with his girlfreind.
Occupation's got nothing to do with it.

welllll....(why must we always differ scott, lol)...
occupation has a little to do with it.
the families of the victims will have a lot to say about how his employers allowed him to pass all the psych tests and carry a gun. just sayin... if he wasnt a cop, its possible he wouldnt have had access to the murder weapon.

I don't know. Wisconsin? Lots of gunowners out there. Cop or not, the shooter seems to be the type that would have a few weapons laying around, or at least have easy access to one.

yes, however, he went thru psych tests that he either passed or results were ignored, or the tests are improper. These tests are designed to catch these kind of nutjobs. He was a cop on 2 different payrolls too! I'm not saying it IS their fault, but a good lawyer will have a field day with the departments.

I'll have to take your word for that. It's a shame that the sheriff's department will be blamed for this.

I also read earlier that they aren't sure how the shooter died - he may have been shot and killed by the police that responded, he may have committed suicide, or he may have been wounded by police and then committed suicide.
Either way, the "trigger" for his rampage was an argument of some sort with his ex-girlfriend then several of the teens at the party calling him a "worthless pig."

I may be wrong but i think most state police forces have minimum age requirements of like 25 why can't local authorities do the same?

Here is great article about the incident from The Exile, written by Mark Ames:
Crandon Rampage: You Taunt, You Die
October 9, 2007
What happened yesterday in the small town of Crandon, Wisconsin, where an off-duty sheriff’s deputy shot and killed six people, wounded a seventh, and eventually got suicide-by-cop'd for a “comma, self” finale, is remarkable for a lot of reasons, but not for the one that the Official Party Line has once again trotted out: you know, the “I can’t believe it happened here” line.
The real mystery is why the fuck the Idiocracy is still scratching its collective head over the ol’ “why” question. "Because there are armed assholes running around in a country full of even meaner assholes, dude! And when the meaner assholes tease the mean asshole with the gun, then the meaner assholes...well, see under: CRANDON if you really wanna know." These people may as well sit around debating whether a tree makes a sound if it falls in an ear-less forest.
As always, Middle America’s first reaction to the latest rampage massacre is to assume that the shooter was a maniac. Cho Seung-hui, who killed 32 at Virginia Tech, affected a madman shtick to go with his real-life madman rampage, thereby providing the horror-factor that Middle America desperately needed in order to frame the shooting in convenient psychology terms. But Tyler Peterson, the 20-year-old rampager in Crandon, looked like the ultimate All American Kid, a blue-eyed jock built and fed for the world of outdoor bar-b-ques and bruising softball games with the local hicks.
After the "madman" assumption comes the next reaction: the single-issue fist-shaking response you get to many of these rage massacres. The reaction to Cho’s massacre was public outcry over the slow police response; anger at the failure of doctors to properly treat and isolate the Cho-ster; and knee-jerk liberal anger over America’s uber-liberal gun laws.
In Tyler Peterson's case, they’re all up in arms (no pun intended) over the fact that a 19-year-old kid can become a sheriff’s deputy in America. Um, folks, what about allowing a 19-year-old kid to patrol a wretched Iraqi slum, where everyone hates him, where he doesn’t know a single word of Arabic, and he’s packing an M-4…and the next thing you know, it’s six dead Iraqi camel jockeys whose names you’ll never learn, whose deaths you’ll never grieve or tremble in horror from, whose fate will never cause you to ask “why” as in “why do they allow 19-year-old boys from Wisconsin to patrol an Iraqi slum with a fully loaded M4?”… This link is truer than you'd think, as someone named "Lindsay, Schofield Barracks, HI," commented on the news story:
"A close friend of mine is from Crandon and graduated with the gunman and some of the victims and he is currently serving in the U.S. Army. It is sad to think that a town so small as Crandon has lost so many in such a small period of time. My friend is coming home in November to have a going away party before he leaves with his unit to Iraq and now three of the guests that had already said they would be there will not get to come. As one of their own gets ready to go and fight in Iraq and know that there are such trageties like this at home is almost disheartening." Disheartening indeed.
So, the Big Question: why did Tyler do it? According to reports, Peterson went to his girlfriend’s house early Sunday morning, where she was having a “pizza party” with a bunch of friends, whatever the hell a Sunday morning pizza party is, when the lovelorn off-duty cop appeared and tried to repair his relationship. Not only did his ex- rebuff him, but the teenage jerks at the party taunted his dumped ass straight out the front door, calling him a “worthless pig” and so on.
To this the biggest angry reaction so far is: why didn't Wisconsin’s finest screen Peterson for psychological problems before hiring him? Let me explain why: it’s not likely that such a test would have helped. Every 20-year-old male who has been dumped and yet is still madly in love is, ipso facto, clinically insane. Period. Give your dumped lovelorn 20-year-old a weapon and a badge, put him in a room full of mean, stoned hicks, and folks, I’ll give you OJ Simpson on whitening cream…
Perhaps nothing is more nauseating than the sentimental Norman Rockwell horseshitting about how Crandon is such a nice, peaceful, picture-perfect town, and no one could ever imagine a massacre happening there… Yeah, and I’m a Uighur jet pilot. If you look on the NBC.com blog of some blow-dried clown named Kevin Tibbles, you’ll find a lot of very interesting reactions, mostly idiotic and delusional, but nearly all revealing in some way. For example, Alissa of Reno, Nevada, wrote this comment: “I grew up 20 minutes from Crandon in an even smaller town, Three Lakes, and I am in absolute shock that something like this has happened where everyone grew up feeling safe. Not locking doors, leaving your car running when you ran quickly into the store. A place where kids played in the street and never had to worry about ‘those big city’ problems. After this incident, I don't think the beautiful northwoods where I grew up will ever be the same.” Right. And they had flowery meadows, and rainbow skies and rivers made of chocolate, didn’t they Alissa? Yes, that’s a good fruitcake… now just lie down and take your medicine, you’re starting to make us nervous…
After a slew of these fairytale accounts of the idyllic life, someone named “andrew” chimed into the blog comments with the grim truth about Crandon: “i live in eagle river, wi, 40 miles from crandon, and i must confess that what happended does not surprise me...Everyone around here knows Crandon as the "bad town" - outsiders are never welcome in this all-white/no minority town...people are not friendly, bar fights are common (town people against "outsiders"),etc...I know a lot of people who lived in Crandon and moved away because they could not tolerate the intolerance... The killer was born and raised in this intollerant community...the fact that he reacted the way he did to a simple break-up shows that Crandon is still the black ship of the northwoods...Word of advice to tourists: stay away from Crandon...stay out of trouble.”
So there you have the "why," if you care to look. Mean young jock in mean shit-kicker town gets dumped by his even meaner girlfriend, and when he comes over in a hormonal rage trying to win her back, the shit-kicker clique transforms Tyler's desperation into their beer-‘n-bongwater entertainment... Give the abused shit-kicker an AR-15 and a badge, and what you've got are 6 dead mockers, and one seriously wounded. Pretty impressive kill-count, by the way. People are a lot harder to kill than you'd think.
