What was the closest you ever came to dying?
I once was about to step out of my car when I heard tires screaching and I looked out my drivers side window and see this car heading right for me! It T bones my door side, pusing my car up on the sidewalk. I couldnt get out and had to climb out the passenger side door.
When I was a kid we used to climb up on my friends roof and leap onto the weeping willow trees and swing down to the ground Tarzan style. In 20-20 hindsite it was pretty stupid I I could have been killed, especially the time we swung down trying to land on the new patio his father built and I fell into some rebar and cut my legs up. I still have the scars.

I was clinically dead for 5.25 minutes when I was 16. Yes, I lived to tell about it and no, it is no big deal. I experienced some interesting things in that short time but saw no angels and saw no departed loved ones but did go through the dark "tunnel" and saw the light which illuminated a beautiful place.

early 80s, i was at a hotel with a pool and thought i could swim and jumped into the deep end of the pool, and just failed ... luckily someone's mom was there to save my day
late 80s, i went swimming out of season, a little too far out, got caught in a strong current and had to be rescued by a stranger
in 1993, i got caught at the seaport during the nor'easter flooding ... had to hop on top of cars under the fdr as the waters raged
in 1999, pre cellphone: my car broke down outside camden on the turnpike, and i had to walk to the next service station along the shoulder, in the pouring rain, as 18 wheelers and other large/speeding vehicles whizzed by recklessly
in 2006, i sat in the emergency room for almost twelve hours as my un-mis-diagnosed appendix ruptured, spreading poison though out my abdomen

How did you clinically die?
I nearly got shot at point-blank range once. Those who know me won't be surprised. My friend took one in the kidney but survived.

Went off a cliff in a car to be saved by a single tree. I looked out my window into the surf 100 feet down.

Fell 30 feet off of a roof and broke a rib, got some cuts and bruises.
Doctor said I would have died if I wasn't so drunk. My body went limp instead of tensing up.
I couldn't close my eyes for a month without feeling the ground rushing up at me.

You seem to have a bad relationship with fluids... Ever think of moving to the desert?
I was shot in the face, bullet is still there with scar tissue keeping it safe for my autopsy someday.

Early 90's, went sky diving to cross it off my list...
Spent all day training to jump free fall, where you climb out on the wing of a plane at 11,000 feet with an instructor but are totally on your own. I let go, forgot to fling my arm back and above my head, completely brain locked and tumbled end over end for what the instructor said was at least 3000 feet. I finally snapped out of it and got my two feet firmly back on the ground

The doc at the emergency room told me if I hadn't sought treatment I would have been dead in 7 hours.
I'm not sure how he came to that figure, but I still drop it on my wife,
"Hey, remember that time I only had seven hours to live..?"

the closest i ever came to dying i couldn't tell you; i dont really have one yet. never even been in a real fight or accident or anything like that. however, the closest i came to death itself may have been today at work (trader joes).
i was cashiering for a sec , when an old man comes through my lane. he leans over and starts coughing really bad and i try to make conversation with him. he doesnt really reply and keeps coughing so i ask if he needs help. the guy still doesnt respond, i look up and one of my coworkers, joann, is about to leave so as she passes my register i tell her to wait a sec. i ask the guy again if hes alright or needs any help-though he stopped coughing he was really pale and sweating bullets.
just as i ask this he starts to slowly collapse and nearly hits his head on the register screen and the wood behind, joann steps in and grabs him while i come around from the other side. she thinks hes having a heart attack and yells out for another coworker to call 911. he looks like he's about dead. i get sent running to find the managers. everything went wacky in a matter of seconds, and im glad i had lifeguard training in the past to (barely) rely on.
we get the poor guy onto the ground and he starts to come around a minute or two later, but the ambulance is on its way regardless. he was still pale and sweating, and was saying something about going to the doctor today to get blood pressure medicine. despite insisting he could drive and was alright, i was glad he when he left in the ambulance.
the whole thing fucked with me and i just needed to get it out of my system. it can get scary when you feel like death is staring you in the face.

I rolled my explorer on black ice in December 2005. The roof of the truck was partially caved in because of impact against a tree. I was not wearing my seat belt.
I somehow walked away.
Lesson learned.

So many stories like that... some you hear "I would have died had I not been wearing my seat belt" some are "I would have died had I wore my seat belt"...
Do you now wear a seatbelt?

the "lesson learned" part means that yes, I wear my seatbelt. I probably would have died from head injuries if I hit the tree or the curb harder, so I'm not sure how much a seatbelt would have helped, but it was scary enough to me to make me wear it on a regular basis.

I tried to swim to an island in a lake in Canada. I was almost there and my arms just gave out. I was trying to keep my head above water but I just sank. I remember the sound in my head, it was like what you hear when you stick a seashell to your ear, but it was almost calming, which in hindsight I think was the scariest part. And I was probably only less than 10 feet from the island.
Anyway, I was trying to kick my legs and I was able to stand on a rock that was just a little bit larger than the others on the lakebed, and I was able to give myself one final push to make it to the island. I laid there for a long time trying to catch my breath. I was able to flag down a boat to give me a lift back to the dock.
Never swim alone.

I was about 9 or 10, and my brother was a baby still in his car seat in the back of the car. We were living on top of this huge hill, ontop of a knights of columbus hall. Anyway there was a huge circular parking lot and at the bottom was a huge cliff with a 50 foot drop.
My parents ran inside the house and left me in the car at the top of the hill with my brother. I decided to see what would happen if I took the car out of park.
The car rolled backwards down the hill, halfway over the cliff, and the front tires caught the lip of the cliff and left us suspended there teetering on the side of the cliff. I had to honk the horn a million times because my parents thought I was just being impatient waiting for them. They practically crapped their pants when they saw us.
Something like 5 firetrucks and a shitload of police cars showed up, grabbed us out of the window, then towed the car out.
Then my Aunt put us all in her car to take us out of there, and some douche backs out of his driveway and smashes up her car.
