so I'm sitting on my couch and I hear screaming out front
I go to the window and discover a very heated discussion and I'm immediately enthralled by it

Way better than anything on cable

So I walked away because I felt like an asshole for using another person's pain as my entertainment but i got to thinking...

would you watch?
are you a lace irish

Yep. But if they're screaming in the middle of the street, out in public, why not watch?

Keep that shit inside.

As long as there is no gun play arguments are the best. My fav is when my neighbors were going at it recently and he pulled out of his buildings garage with his wife holding on to the trunk of the car yelling ,"You cant leave cause I fuckin love you!!"

I love relationships !!

If you want it to stay private, stop screaming, and go inside.

It was always fun in college to stick around in the parking lot after last call and watch the fights/arrests.

It's an old term that the Irish would buy lace curtains so they could see everything that was going on in the neighborhood.

but alsoooo.....

My relatives also used the term, "Lace curtain Irish," for Irish people who, "put on airs," actin all high-society and hoity-toity and snooty with their lace curtains........

My peoples are shanty-folk :0)

Sure enough, I had lace curtains growing up! They helped spot the Jehovas Witnesses and we could warn the neighbors.

HAH! Man.... Where my parents live now... they totally have lace curtains too! Even now!

You know what else... and this is unrelated of course.... but Irish people also seem partial to lace doilies..... I'm like, "Can there be one flat surface in this place that doesn't have a doily on it!??" It's madness!

Crackets are the best. I would go for the crackets before any of that other stuff. I mean crackets, you gotta love crackets. MMmm crackets are crackets.

my family always looked at "lace curtain irish" this way:

"lace curtain irish", even though poor, would put up lace curtains to seem more respectable.
it took on a meaning of putting on airs or trying to impress someone.

that's the only way i heard it ... usually in comparison to shanty irish

the rockaway shanty irish could never stand their westchester lace curtain cousins

there was that great scene in 'the departed' where marky mark calls leo lace curtain

never heard of the nosy neighbor version ... they usually come in all ethnicity and races
