In general, I have a bad back due to a fall I took skating a couple years ago. And for the past few days my back has been tightening up alot. Now the past couple nights when I lay down to sleep I keep getting back spasms. It's making it difficult to sleep and making me feel like shit whenever I'm up cause all I wanna do is sleep.
Any ideas how to help with that without taking pills for it, I don't really wanna get used to doing that every time it starts bothering me.

If it's lower back, someone on here (think it was blackbird) told me about a good stretch. You lay down like you're going to do push ups. Point your toes back so that the tops of your feet are on the floor. Push up, but keep your legs on the floor, so it bends your back. Hold it for about 10 or 20 seconds and lay back down.

I do this a few times when I first feel the spasms coming. It really helps.

When mine gets that bad, all I can do is sit in my computer chair with a heating pad and drink shit loads of rum and coke.

Stretch as much as you can. I know it sucks but take 3 minutes and strecth every day; you'll learn to love it. Not bullshit stretches but good...long...stretch til it burns a lil at the end stretches. The kind you let out a great big sigh after. That and Flexeril.

I usually take a hot shower. The heat is good for it and the shower spray, on high, will give your back a good massage.

My sister is a massage therapist and she recommends alternating heat and cold. 15 minute increments. I tried it once for a wrenched neck and it really did work. The heat relaxes the muscle and the cold reduces inflammation. Can't hurt to give it a shot.

Although it looks like a sex toy from an old folks home, the sacro wedgy does wonders for lower spine issues:

I used it before my laminectomy/discectomy when I was really sick of being on the vicodin nod and it really helped.

The website should help you figure out if this thing will help you. The blue one is for men, and the pink one is for broads. I think it has a fake penis attached to it or something.

I've had a bad back for years, and that stretch helps out a lot. I usually do that stretch in the morning, along with the following stretches. First, I kneel on one knee, and put the other let out forward foot flat. That I lean forward and stretch the hamstring and the quad. The I switch legs.

Then I do the stretch above. Then I do a stretch with one leg extend (let's say right), and then put the left leg over the right, sort of lying on my right side. Then I take my right hand and press down on my left leg, while extending out my left arm straight out pushing my left shoulder to the ground. Often my back will pop like popcorn. Then I switch legs.

At night, if my back's bothering me, I'll use ice/cold packs on the area. That helps a lot, along with some advil.

The stretches described so far have been classic yoga postures:

Cobra (http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/471)

Lunge (http://www.sissel-online.com/exercise/yoga_lunge_knee_down.php)

My favorite is a standing variation of the Child's Pose (http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/475), but I haven't found a picture yet. Here's the standard one:
