I'm kind of intrigued by salaries in the U.S.
Yesterday on O&A they were talking about Nassau police being paid a good wage of $50,000.00
To me this seems low, especially for the NY area. I mean police officers are very important people to society, I expected more than that.
What is your yearly salary? Is it high for the area and industry?
So not to be a nosey nancy...
I'm a Safety Lead, I'm salaried, my annual is base $66,500. I match that in OT and get a bonus at year end and living allowance.
I make a solid $150,000 a year after bonus and such.... it's average.
How's aboot people in your area?

I think they said its a $50,000 starting salary which is very good if you consider cops in the city start at under $30,000.

$150,000 is average?
Wow. Average for what? I don't even thing the VP of our department makes that much.

I'm sure $50,000 in Long Island is a pretty decent starting salary. In NY this doesn't get you very far. I don't think anyone who lives on the isle of Manhattan can live comfortably on less than $100K+. That's why most of us live in the boroughs and commute on long hellish train rides everyday because employers don't in fact pay us a real standard of living wage.

Is that Canadian dollars or American? Because 150K ain't fuckin average. That post is gonna make lots of people here take a road trip to Canada for a little home invasion.

Shit, sorry.
I don't mean "average" as in 'okay'... I meant industry average for Industrial safety.
Kiff.... Whether Canadian or American.... what's the difference? 6 months ago yes, today....
And I'm not trying to point out my wage, I put it on here so people didn't think I was nosing... an 'equality' thing...
It seems to me though that the New York Area is so damned expensive that you'd have to pull in around 100k just to live like a 40k Montana resident.
I'm just intriqued by this.... that's all
Dude!

you didn't factor in overtime which can easily double or triple a cop's pay

If I had to guess, I'd say the average salary in America falls between the 40k and 60k range, though I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that it's lower.

Yeah, I think Mojo is close with that.
Ramgots, yeah, you're right. Cost of living makes it all screwy. What I make is very comfortable for Texas, but I'd probably be just a regular schmuck in a NYC, for example.
I'm in safety too, but in construction safety. I am salaried, so I get no overtime. I have been feeling out hourly positions so I can step up to what you're getting there.

That's the same as me. Construction safety... doesn't matter the setting, commercial or industrial.
I'd love an opportunity to get home every night and fall asleep with my wifes boobs in hand but until commercial construction around my area pays as much as industrial construction in this area, it's not too likely.
Cost of living is huge! I live in the cheapest City in Alberta, the downside is that it's also the lowest paying. I can live like a Rockstar but I also sacrifice more than most... my son's first hockey practice ever is on Saturday... I'll be at work.
Now....
For instance, living;
My mortgage for a 4 bedroom house is $220 a week ($880 or $1100 a month depending on how many Fridays there are that month). I hear quite often that rent around NY is close to $3000 in some places... would that be just in the city or is that fairly average no matter the area?
And then this one has always stumped me....
Fox's "Joe Millionaire" was a construction worker from NY... his annual salary was listed as $16,000!
How can that be afforded?

I'm not. Mafia controlled construction companies get the contracts, then pay off the books, and alter their bookkeeping to avoid taxes.

My wife and I are both in Finance and make a combined income of about $180 K per year after bonuses and we both work in Manhattan (she is 25 and I am 27). We live in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, which is about as close as you can get to Manhattan without living in it. We own a 750 square foot, 1 BR that can probably sell right now for about $450 K. Our monthly mortgage is about $1600 and our monthly maintenance is over $600. And these prices aren't even close to what you would be paying acroos the river. As it is we barely make enough to sack away a solid savings. So, if you are looking for a gauge, there is no way we can afford to own an apartment NYC on almost $200 K a year without kids.

and, after 4 years Nassau County cops base salary is $97,500 without overtime. They are the second highest paid police force in the country behind, you guessed it....Suffolk County. The are at $103 K after 4 years.

Holy shit, $97,500 pre OT.
I'm surprised, but very glad that some of the police officers get paid so well.

I make very good money for what I do, I will not say exactly what, but well above average for my position, but thats because I work for an evil giant conglomerate that doesn't take care of anyone but the CEOs.

I was surprised as you cause most things I've learned from watching Joe Millionaire haven't really worked out when I've applied them in real life. I was thinking of organizing a class action suit against the producers of Joe Millionaire for misleading the public. Its really a travesty when Joe Millionaire leads us in the wrong direction. Anyone thats interested in being a part of this suit against Joe Millionaire and Fox please PM me with your name and financial information. I've talked with Mikeyboy about representing us and he is on board.
