View Full Version : Mainelli takes a veiled shot at Opie

Not sure if this was mentioned on the show yet, but Mainelli wrote an article where he takes a veiled shot at Opie:

http://www.insideradio.com/pdheadlines.asp?phid=516544&PT=Today%27s+Top+Stories

He specifically mentions Jim and Anthony (and takes a shot at Ant) and leaves out Opie. Interesting.

In no apparent order, without even thinking too hard: Bill Burr & Joe DeRosa; Patrice Oneal; Nick DiPaolo; Tom Leykis (V1.0); Bob Kelly; Mos Def; Jim Norton (maybe partnered with Anthony Cumia if the latter promises to work harder and play with his money only on weekends); Lynn Samuels; Ron & Fez; Lionel; JV & Elvis; Scott Ferrall; Jim Florentine; Phil Hendrie (if he’ll hang his bits more often on current events).

I know the Lions are on bye this week, but shouldn't he be worrying about the game in two weeks instead of radio shows. They need to win 10 games, Kitna guaranteed it.

I can't access the story. What is the purpose behind mentioning these names? It looks like he's suggesting them for something.

I don't think he's taking a shot at Opie as much as he is actually making a pretty good list of who could survive on talk radio.

I actually agree with most of that list. Its nice to know he's actually listened to the SNV.

How is it possible to succeed with young-guy talk without resorting to cheap-shot beer & babes?
Two ingredients: humor and subversive-ness. Tell me what young guy doesn’t crave both, won’t tell all his friends, and won’t force his girlfriend to listen?

In these lawyered-up days of tight-assed P.C., young guys need freedom. A chance to laugh. A chance to satirize. A chance to vent. (Can you believe Fox’s over-bleeping at the Emmys?)

Now I’m going to give you some names for this format, since I’m tired of hearing, “There’s no talent out there.” This consultation is so valuable that you’re going to have to declare it on your income tax even if you just read it.

Nick DiPaolo fan since day one.

Its kinda sad to see a grow man revert to such childish behavior. A guy the stature of John should know to take the high road.

Winner. The problem with most of the people Mainelli mentioned is that they're under contract at other places.

He makes some good points and names some good names in the article. I think Anthony would do well with many people, not only Norton. My dream team of radio would be a Bennington and Cumia tag team.

Opie has a place in radio, he didn't get to where he's at on the back of Ant (as many say). Remember the old Hutterite addage of "you're only as strong as your weakest link"?

And honestly, I think I've enjoyed Opie on the show more the last few weeks then ever before.

Now, maybe he was taking a shot at Opie. If he was, good for him. He knew EXACTLY where to go to keep his name in radio land. If it was a shot; It was calculated.

He's just trying to put together a theretical 92 dream team which seems impossible in these post imus days, just to prove talk is not dead. I'm surprised he hasn't dropped his O&A beef yet. As much as Opie can annoy and bore I can't see a Anthony and Norton team flowin well.

I love the fact he led with Bill Burr and Joe DeRosa. Nobody in that business probably ever heard of them but he obviously sees the potential they have.

The Phil Hendrie nod was good too but I didn't get whether he wanted him to drop his new styrl or revert: "if he’ll hang his bits more often on current events", He's too focused on current events now.

Take out Lykis and you have something on your hands.

I miss Opie already.

I think it is a good article - and would be a great station.

That's not much of a shot at Opie (although I'm sure Opie had a temper tantrum about it). I think he was just listing what type of shows (and personalities) he would like to see on a station. For example, "Tom Leykis V 1.0", I know someone who used to live on the west coast years ago and he said Leykis' show was nothing like the show he does now.

I guess Mainelli knows how to say something pompous to sell newspapers(get traffic).

I thought he has a great general idea, but in a "post imus" lawyer crazy world it wouldn't work.

R&F could do that format easy, but I'm sorry to say most of the others would return to "beer and boobs" at least occasionally.

As far as the digs go, hey thats life and everyone takes digs when given the chance. O&A are guilty on if too.

This will inevitably be on the O&A show tomorrow. My money's on it being discussed at about 9:15am tomorrow. $50 riding on this one.

I like the list for the most part. Remove Leykis and Ferrell; I hated Ferrell even when he was friend of the show. He had no chemistry with anyone and ran out of steam in under 10 minutes most times. Include Opie too. Just 'cuz you don't mess with a black ninja.

And are we to assume all these comedians are willing to put in the work and make the transition to everyday host as opposed to great guest as someone else wrote. There is something to be said for balance, knowing how to structure a show and being able to create material 5 days a week for a show. I look at O / A as a perfect type team. O is the radio guy as we all know, but does the work and brings the issues to the table and Ant is the force that makes everything funny while O supports. It's a perfect situation. Could a Ant/Ronny show work as individually they are amazing and together from time to time they show chemistry too. However, Ron is an alpha dog and would he go after Ant eventually with his comedy, and how would Ant roll with it? Ron needs his ESD, Billy Staples, Wonderboy, just as much as he needs his Fez. And it goes the other way as well. Chemistry is a huge factor in successful radio and both hosts can't bring the same skill set to the table in my mind.

Interesting that Manelli didn't bother to name any newer talent like CT & Jivin and Next/Hideout

Dude, he put LYNN SAMUELS and LIONEL on there. How could those two shows possibly work with a demo like O&A's and R&F's?

Yeah that is strange cause weren't CT and Jiven supposed to start on Free FM until the format flipped?

My timeline may be off by a little bit but...

Tuesday CT& Jivin are given the slot, taking it over the upcoming Monday
Thursday, the station flip is announced

Well, they were given the post R&F spot "for an indefinite period" the week before the flip. It's not clear whether they were outright given the slot or if management, because they knew the flip was coming, decided to stop booking out of town talent for the tryout slot.

i try to look at that as a glass half full kind of thing for them. even though it never technically happened, the offer was there. maybe that was Minelli's way of allowing them to put that on their resume so that any future employers could see they were about to be given a shot, and then due to situations beyond their control, they didn't

Eh, radio people love taking shots at each other, so I wont completely doubt Mainelli leaving Opie out of the discussion as a dig. But as far as talk radio in general goes it is a dying sport just about everywhere. I actually kind of liked the Free FM programming for the obvious O&A and R&F stuff, I also liked when Tazz did his show every once and a while. Anyway, the real point is when a station that had as much hype as the Free FM format had tanks, it just turns into a backbiting war no matter whose "fault" it really was.
