So my kid has a project for science class. We were throwing ideas around, and he said"Why don't you ask the guys on Ron and FEz .net. ( He knows you guys are sharp !!)
the class has to drop an egg 30 meters, without breaking. No pillows allowed. He thought of bubble wrap, any other ideas ? I promise this won't be a regular annoyance !!

I think they did this in a zoom episode once

hard boil the egg and then soak it in vinegar, it will make it act similar to a super ball

Just tell the kid to drop out. Dropping an egg wont help him in life.

I did this in high school, so things that worked were: egg crate foam, popcorn and gelatin. I tried using insulation spray foam and while it worked in test runs the only failure we had was in the competition. The coolest was these geeks who built a thing that suspended the egg in air.

google 'mythbusters egg drop'
Challenge 4: Build a device to drop an egg (without breaking it) with help of two oranges, two latex gloves, paper, five feet (1.5 meters) of tape, twenty feet (six meters) of string, and "other assorted trash found lying around the workshop".

Adam created a cone made of paper. He put an orange on the bottom and the egg was placed inside the inflated gloves. He had two tries to drop the egg without breaking it. Jamie first ate his orange, and put the egg inside the orange peel. The orange went in one glove, and he tied it to a string. At the other end of the string he affixed the five feet (1.5 metres) of tape. With this approach he could drop the suspended egg from only a few feet off the ground via the string/tape. It was successful. Adam protested, but Jamie was the winner, as this was a contest of ingenuity.

you gotta make sure you let that vinegar soak in all the way, the first time, i didnt, and left a huge mess on my front steps.

1st - PALM the egg
(hold the egg in an apparently empty hand)
2nd - DITCH the egg
(secretly dispose of the egg)
3rd - STEAL the egg
(secretly obtain the egg)
4th - LOAD the egg
(secretly move the egg to where its needed)
5th - SIMULATION
(give the illusion that something that hasn't happened, has. pretending the egg was dropped)
6th - MISDIRECTION
(lead attention away from the secret move)
7th - SWITCH the egg
(secretly exchange one object with another)

this whole process is explained here....

i dont think you can modify the eggs anymore, i think the eggs are provided by the school and inserted just before dropping. this is all about the eggs container, not the egg itself.

this whole thing goes bact to how nasa uses our children. successful ideas were then weighed in as ideas for how to make a mars landing. that is how they decided on the method to drop the mars lander robots a few years ago.

build an open cube structure probably a cubed foot in volume. securely adhere rubber bands about 1/2ft in length to all eight corners. securely attach the ends of the rubber bands to the egg which should be at this point suspended in the middle of the cube.

oh ok then use a bed roll. That weird bumpy foam shit. It will keep it from breaking on first bounce and catch it when it starts rolling around.

Acoustic foam -
Cut a semi-oval into two pieces of the foam and secure the two pieces together with rubber bands. The final form of the two pieces of foam put together should resemble a cube. The egg is inserted in the cutouts and the will not crack. I did this in 1990 and it worked just fine.

I haven't read the other replies, but you might want to consider this. Did the rules say it has to be an egg from a chicken? If not, then use a robin egg or something. Sure... the shell is more fragile, but the weight is much less. Wrap a robin egg in bubble wrap, and you could probably drop it from space. He might get points for originality.

i think he said they give you the egg right beforehand. that's why no boiling/vinegar bath. i'd say bubble wrap and toy rocket parachute.

you need something to absorb the shock as slow as possible, like rubber bands at medium tension.

bubble wrap might be to tight for it to not crack the egg. kind of like how if you fall into water from high enough you can die. i know that is more a surface tension thing, but same principals in the sense that the bubbles in the bubble wrap were designed for prolonged pressure. you need something that is quickly going to be able to absorb a shock and then bounce back just as fast.

maybe wrap it in a layer of small bubble bubble wrap, and then make a new out of rubber bands and encapsulate that into some sort of tube with a decelerator on it like a parachute to slow the decent down.

just build it so no matter how it falls, the egg is taken care of. like if it spins out of control and lands the opposite of the way you planned, the egg still will be in tact. planning on something landing right side up in this type of thing will be your downfall. you need something that no matter how it lands, you are ok.

I say just throw the egg off the roof. Maybe a Miracle happens. If not, you got a D-

JPMNICK

forget the bubble wrap, you need foam. like from home depot that you can use as insulation. get the lightest softest foam you can. make a pocket with the foam and duct tape. that way come the competition you can place the egg in the foam pocket. from there, it should go into some rubber banded holder inside of like a big container. maybe an old gallon of water, but prolly something bigger. between the container, rubber bands, and foam all absorbing the impact, plus a parachute of some kind, you should be OK

you need the bumpy bed roll foam

Thanks everyone, youse guys really are the best.
I think the main purpose of this is how they apply their formula
Mass , distance and velocity. But we will try to work in alot of your good ideas !!
Thanks again

Get a newborn baby and drop the egg on its fontanel It will just plop right in there and you'll be sure to score extra for creativity.

Radius is half of the diameter.

Surface area = 4 x pi x radius squared.

Volume = 4/3 x pi x radius cubed.

Plug in 25 for the radius and start multiplying.

I've seen kids it wrapped in lots of bubble wrap in a box. The kid then made a parachute to allow the box to float down.
