I was driving up to Sussex County, NJ today and I saw an old phone booth on a corner. I suddenly remembered I haven't seen one of those things in a LONG ass time. Why has the phone booth become a thing of the past? Or is it just my area? Are phone booths still going strong in other areas of the country, or even just other areas of my part of the US?

Cell phones killed the phone booth.

In fact, I've only recently seen some pay phones return, but they are not your 'ol regular pay phones, their owned by some phone company that most likely charges you extra than say, a public pay phone.

you'll only find them in mob-influenced areas.

Well, that's pretty much the answer I guess. I have a pay as you go cell phone so I don't think of it as a real phone for some reason.

Pretty much case closed I guess.

It's not like you don't still see pay phones once in a while. You just never see phone booths. It's just a payphone on a wall or something. I guess they decided it's too expensive/pointless to put it in a booth.

Phone calls have ceased to become a private matter, people just blather on out loud, without caring whether others will be annoyed. I think Blowhard has a phone booth at his place.

The phone booth is dead. Sad day for Dr. Who who now reluctantly warps time and space with a cellphone and for Superman who has to modestly get changed in public restrooms from hereon out.

Why can't I find dinosaur chow in any of the pet food stores?

Why can't I send a telegram these days?

What's with this crazy iron horse? What's wrong with the regular, meat-based horse?

My geek time. Dr. Who's Tardis is in the form of a police box, which is different from a phone booth in that, in addition to providing a phone to the local station, it also could hold prisoners.

I think the police box went away after radios started being used.

My friend just moved to Lindenhurst on Long Island and I visited and noticed several of these England style booths on the street:

I used to remember seeing these kinds everywhere:

But I haven't seem one of them in many years. I remember ducking into them during torrential downpours. Then I guess right around the time that I remember them vanishing bums would pee in them and trash them. Maybe people were killed in one when a car would crash into it too. Either way, the cell phone has made them obsolete. Some restaurants have them still when they are trying to go for an "old school" theme.
