View Full Version : Chest of Drawers vs. "Chester Drawers"

OMG. Please settle this.
Jeff and his brother are CONVINCED that a dresser is not called a "Chest of Drawers", it's called "Chester Drawers".
They were adamant about this, to the point of saying "I really think you're wrong" when I pointed out again, it was "Chest of Drawers".
CHESTER DRAWERS or CHEST OF DRAWERS (why do I even have to confirm this, I can't believe they actually think it is chester drawers but they honestly don't believe me.

Chester Drawers seems like a Cartoon Character derived from the ACTUAL WORD Chest of Drawers
I kinda thought it was Chest of Draws, but Chest of Drawers seems like thats right

chester drawers doesn't even make any sense.
edit: furthermore --
Chester drawers
Mispronunciation/spelling of chest of drawers.
A vanity or dresser with no mirror. (http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Undictionary:C)
It's chest of drawers. And they're made in China.

He may be someone's ESD, however.

Jeff's mother has an accent like "The Nanny"... I think when they were growing up she must have said chest of drawers and it came out CHESTAH DRAWERS... this is all I can think of.
sr71blackbird
10-19-2007, 05:47 AM
I think you are right, the accent must have bastardized it. It is a chest with drawers in it.
There are two women where I work who both say "draws" instead of 'drawers'.

How does he pronounce drawers? My wife (a Long Island girl) pronounces it draws. I think it's wrong, but I pronounce it with the r, and it doesn't sound like draw with an r. It sounds more like drowrs.

Parents will do that to you. He probably heard it around the house and because it's one of those words that never came up in his schooling he was never corrected. I'll share an embarrassing story with you all:
When I was growing up my crazy-ass dad used to call sheetrock shirrack for some reason. Once I had an argument with my parents and punched a hole in my bedroom wall. My father was so pissed. He told me: "You're going to go down to Home Depot and buy some plaster and shirrack and fix it yourself."
Now, I was a 17 year-old kid. I didn't know shirrack from sheetrock. I didn't even know what i was looking for, much less what it was called. So, I asked this guy working there where I could find the shirrack. He looks at me all crazy like and then after asking some questions says: "Oh, you mean sheetrock." He then takes me down to the sheetrock aisle with this big shit-eating grin the whole way. It was years before I'd ever go into that Home Depot again.
