It's a difficult call. Would you be an alarmist and let the country know how many close calls the aviation industry actually deals with or do you sweep it under the rug to preserve an already ailing industry?

I don't think I'd call myself an alarmist, but I believe it's always better to know more than less. And while they're at it, why don't they release numbers about all the other so-called airline related threats we've been throwing money at the last 6 years.

If we don't have the data, we can't hold anyone accountable, and then we all lose. Even with the inflated figures, I'm sure airline travel still comes out as safer than driving.

I don't know. I mean ignorance can sometimes be bliss. Maybe I don't want to think about all the potential dangers of air travel while I'm flying. Maybe it's something that should be handled internally between the FAA and the airlines. I mean, it's not like people can simply abstain from flying. It's a necessary part of the world economy. I mean think about it. You're fighting against nature...gravity. Man was not meant to fly. Disaster is inevitable.

Fortunately and with due credit to the airline industry, as track records go, air travel has been consistently safe on average.

The question remains, how much SHOULD the general public know about things that could POTENTIALLY harm them versus things that actually harm them.

Jeff, do you walk off the plane if the pilot looks Chinese?

NASA?
Whatever happened to the FAA?
I am for full disclosure.
That the airline industry is ailing is their own damned fault for a multitude of reasons.
They just don't know how to do business.
Seems to me a year or two ago they got rules relaxed for landings and takeoffs.
It used to be that a plane could not land on a runway that another plane was taking off on, but they got it relaxed to allow a plane to land on the same runway another plane was taking off of.

Chalk me up to not wanting to know. I hope the right people know if there's anything that can be done, but at the end of the day a "near miss" is still a miss and the safety record of the air industry overall is pretty amazing given the volume of flights and flyers. I'm terrified of flying as it is, so I'm gonna be crying either way.

I see the value in knowing what the state of the industry is in, but the public is scared as it is. The government and controlling entities like the FAA should know these things more than us and they should make whatever corrections are necessary for public safety. I always wonder why the media show that smuggled weapons were brought onto planes for the sake of shaking up the public, and then I think of what the terrorists think when they see these reports

i don't understand why NASA's running this. I really should be the FAA

Overheard in the NASA smoking room...

NASA guy 1: I'm getting sick of people cracking on us for a couple of blown up shuttles.

NASA guy 2: Yeah, me too. Let's do a study that will disgrace those "sub orbital" pussies at the FAA.

I'd rather not know. No news is good news. Either way though, I'm still going to fly, its not going to stop me.

Yeah, they think they're a bunch of rocket scientists.

Usually when the government hides something it's for our own good. And airline profits are more important than human lives.

ARE YOU PEOPLE INSANE?!!!

It's not like we're saying NOBODY should see the report. I just said *I* I don't want to read it.

Pussy! I want one of those large print versions so I can read it on a fucking plane! I been flying alone since my parents divorced when I was 3 and I can't enjoy a flight anymore until one of the engines is in flames. The flight I took from Dubai to Bangkok I was chatting up the two Arab flight attendents when we hit some turbulence and they both freaked out and I didn't even notice it happened. I flew the Yemeni national air carrier whenever possible just for the increased chance that a wing might fall off. John Lithgow was looking at me!

I'd like to think all the flying I've done in my life would make it better, but no, it's gotten worse as time goes on. Though I actually prefer the longer flights overseas. They tend to be less bumpy. And dear God, flying in and out of "the Windy-fucking-City" over Lake Michigan sucks serious ASS.

NASA hints to Congress it may reveal air safety research (http://www.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/10/31/air.safety.secrets.ap/index.html)

Hinting? Is this some kind of game? Guess what? It might be bad... it might not!!!

Just tell us already.

And I'm guessing it'll scare the shit out of everyone.
