...And I am not talking about one-hit wonders (although they could also be included). I mean musicians and/or bands that have one song that is great but nothing else they do sounds like it.

Here's a recent example for me: Straylight Run. "Hand in the Sky" is a pretty cool song, but everything else I have been able to find by them is soft, whiny crap.

Another example: Soul Asylum. I only really liked "Somebody to Shove" and the rest of their stuff sounds nothing like it.

Anybody else have major disappointments like this?

Aerosmith: "Janie's Got A Gun".

I have to disagree about Soul Asylum. Even on Grave Dancers Union, I think there are other great songs (not discussing Runaway Train) that has the same sound. In fact, I love "Without A Trace" and "Black Gold" as much if not more than Somebody to Shove.

This is going to be a really subjective thread, based more on personal opinion than popularity.

Granted, "Without a Trace" and "Black Gold" were popular songs, but IMO they didn't have the anger and energy that "Somebody to Shove" had. They were much more mellow and melodic, as were the rest of the songs on that album and others.

I meant that in terms of the conditions set forth:

It's certainly not a "great" song but it definitely is different sounding for them.

This is how I felt about Collective Soul's Shine. When it came out I thought, "It's not a real rockin' song but it's got a little punch to it." Then every song after it got pussier and pussier.

Oh, well then I was wrong. I didn't completey read the mission statement in the 1st thread.

I agree. Aerosmith doesn't even have one good song.

Oh, hells no. If anything, they're a band I was always baffled didn't have at least 1 or 2 more minor hits since they had quite a few songs along those lines.

GREAT call. Love that song. And I heard it recently on a Cadillac commercial!

Milli Vanilli "We Can Get It On" sounds nothing like their other songs that made it to radio.

I think you are right about the subjectevism about this thread. In talking about Soul Asylum for example, you mention anger, energy, mellow, and melodicism. On their '88 album "Hang Time" all of those were covered. The song "Sometime to Return" had everything but the mellow. They did however go much lighter in the 90s.
