I hear people who aren't from the South saying Rendezvous Barbecue is the best and it makes me cringe every time I hear it. To be honest, Rendezvous isn't event the best Barbecue in Memphis and most people there would agree.

Keep in mind that when you talk about barbecue, you really are talking about 3 things:
Sauce
Ribs
Pulled Pork (insert terrible joke here)

So I ask you, who makes the best Barbecue?

I have 3:
1. Dreamland - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
2. Miss Myra's - Cahaba Heights, Alabama
3. Tom Jenkins - Fort Lauderdale, Florida
( I couldn't believe barbecue being good in South Florida until I
went there either. )

Holy Smoke, Mahopac, NY. An unusual place to try and find BBQ I agree, which is why it is such a pleasant surprise to smell the pit smoke and let the meat melt in your mouth. Everywhere else around it sucks, eve most of the places I've gone in NYC for it.

I used to love Dallas BBQ across NYC and then I realized how awful it was, I've still yet to try Virgil's, but I heard there is a place called the Smoke Shack (i think) in Bk that is supposed to rock.

I hate to stray from the sauce, ribs and pulled pork prerequisites, but I started getting into brisket recently. I had the best brisket sandwich at the Smokehouse in Hilton Head, SC. It was a little odd because they have 2 BBQ sauces: sweet or spicy. And they let you apply the sauce yourself, which I also thought was odd, until I tasted both of the sauces and then mixed them and put them on the sangwich. The brisket was great without the sauce, but awesome with it! 2 thumbs up for the Smokehouse.

I just had dinner a couple of days age at a place just outside of Austin, Tx called The Salt Lick. The BBQ was pretty F-ing awesome. Plus they serve it "family style", which means they keep bringing plates of it until you explode. I fyou're ever in the area- I highly recommend it.

While I want to tour all sorts of BBQ restaurants cus I like to eat I gotta say that making your own real BBQ is really not that hard or expensive. You can get a decent smoker that doubles as a charcoal grill (or just use a big kettle grill like the BBQ U guy on PBS) for pretty cheap, then alls you need is the time to do it.

I think you mean Smoke. It's off of Lex in the 20's somewhere, and it's pretty good. Way too much money for barbeque, though.

I've always thought that Dreamland was terribly overrated. Miss Myra's is great though. I hear they baste their meat with the tears of young children

Rudy's in San Antonio / Austin.

Went there too- preferred The Salt Lick, but Rudy's was pretty good. Pretty interesting buying the extra moist brisket by the pound and eating it off of wax papaer. And their cream corn rocks, although I don't want to think about what it's doing to my arteries right now.

If we're going to talk about Best BBQ in the country I have to go with Eastern North Carolina BBQ. Its not smothered in sauce like most you'll find. Its a great mix of pork, peppers and vinegar, I fucking loved it! I flew home with two packs of it, I dug it so much.

Absolutely. I have enjoyed Wilber's in Goldsboro on several occasions. I once left at 7:00am on the motorcycle and arrived 544 miles later at around 5:00pm for dinner. Great pulled pork and hushpuppies.

One of the places he talks about is Rendezvous. It's good don't get me wrong but Memphis has a lot more to offer than Rendezvous. The good thing about Memphis in May (other than all the great bands you will see) is that every BBQ place for miles will have a place there for you to sample.

I lived in Cahaba Heights for a couple of years while I finished school.
Jim and Nicks is good but I don't like the ribs. I agree also with the B'ham Dreamland----the original in that shitty little shack in Ttown is the best. Broadway joe used to eat there way back in the day. It is truly the BEST BBQ in the world.

Hope all is well in the Ham.

Smokehouse is pretty good, ribs leave something to be desired. There is a guy off of Highway 46, right outside of Hilton Head, on Saturdays and Sundays that sets up a tent and sells ribs and pulled pork and it is awesome.

Anyone visiting Southern Illinois should check out 17th Street Bar and Grill in Murphysboro or Marion. They also have a location in O'Fallon Illinois and a place in Vegas called Memphis Championship Barbecue (or something close). The original is in Murphysboro and it is fantastic, three time world grand champion at Memphis in May, "the BBQ cookoff". Anyway you may say, why visit Southern Illinois, usually I would agree but the wineries are booming down here and it is quiet and friendly.

Here (http://www.17thstreetbarbecue.com/)is their website, President Clinton had these delivered to him when he visited St. Louis years ago. I should also say that ribs are my favorite food, although my experiences are limited. I have been to Memphis, but didn't hit any of the great joints down there. I usually cook my own or get 17th street.

Eastern style is good stuff. Western style, which is ketchup based, is good too. The problem with western style though is that it's easy to hide inferior cooking with the sauce. You can't really do that with Eastern style.

If you haven't been to Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City you haven't had good BBQ. If you ever have any reason to go to KC you have to hit AB's. And don't just go to the satellite in the casino; go to the one downtown. Top 5 places to eat on the planet for me. Everynoe from Jimmy Carter to Speilberg to James Spader on the walls.

Like them both, Rendevouz more than Interstate. And contrary to popular belief, there is a good rib joint on Beale Street - Blues City Cafe, across from BB Kings. The place is an absolute dive, which makes it that much better.

If you live in the Tampa Area, next weekend is Rib-Fest. I was thinking about going Saturday.
Tons of great choices in BBQ Ribs, a lot of locals getting their food out there, etc...tons of beer and for the love of God; enough classic rock to produce a veritable panoply of rednecks, derelicts and dullards the likes of which haven't been seen in the bay area since last year's Rib Fest!!!!!!
Saturday has the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Eddie Money and Grand Funk Railroad----all in Vinoy Park. It should be a blast and should highlight the best BBQ in the Bay area. True, there isn't much good BBQ around here, but I bet there will be plenty of good choices next weekend. Hope to see you there. (10/9-10/11)
