My company car with the XM in it is in the shop getting a new air conditioning compressor and getting the cruise control fixed. It's been gone for a week now, and I'm using the "loaner" car that has AM, FM and the weatherband. Oh, and only one speaker works.
My question, oh great and powerful Oracle, is: will I make it another week driving 250-300 miles a day in New Jersey listening to terrestrial radio, or will I open my wrists with a box cutter and end the horror?

Are you Catholic? You may want to consult a priest about Last Rites.

Pray, that seems to work. (Doesn't it?)
The better question is why are they fixing the ac in the fall when you dont need it and why is it taking so long?

can't you listen to it on the net?...or forties and bluntz...one of the two.
I remember when my Roady crapped out and I had to order another one (from MyRadioStore.com, naturally) and live an entire week without XM. It was pure torture. Luckily, Ron and Fez were on vacation that week but it was still a nightmare having to listen to terrestrial radio all day while working.

Oh they "fixed" it in August when I needed it, but it never worked right. Down here it's been humid and in the mid 70s and even into the 80s.
Until that is I bring it into the shop, and we get 5 days of rain and it's in the low 60s now.
It takes so long because it's a foreign job. Subaru. I know, I know, it's manufactured in Indiana by Americans (they took our jobs) but the parts are still made overseas. So Kerbeck Subaru, the only Subaru dealer in Atlantic County has parts delivered only on Thursdays.
It also has a bad catalytic converter. The "check engine" light has been on and on this year and model (2004 Outback) when the "check engine" light is on due to an emissions code, it disables the cruise control. So it's going to take a while for that crap too. It's been in before for the same problem, although it was a Subaru recall last time. This time we have to pay for it because they have replaced the entire exhaust from the exhaust manifolds to the tailpipe, and also all the electronics and the emissions computer. That was October 2006, when the car had 95,000 miles on it. It now has 160,000 miles on it and I doubt any warranty is still in play.
BTW, the Subaru Outback and Legacy models have 5 (five) catalytic converters, each costing 450 dollars at the dealership. 4 from the exhaust manifolds to the tailpipe, and 1 going back upstream via the exhaust recirculator.
Are Subarus reliable? Yes, because we get between 230-275 thousand miles if they get the service the manual says to give.
Are Subarus safe? Yes, I hit a tractor trailer at 55 MPH in Millville and walked away from the wreckage.
Are Subarus expensive, and a pain in the ass? HELL YES!
Engineering nightmares, with redudant systems that aren't needed that make normal costs of maintenance up to 20% more expensive then domestics.
Waiting on Parts. ALWAYS FUCKING WAITING FOR PARTS! And when your local dealership for the car you need serviced is the biggest asshole dealership chain in New Jersey, it just makes it worse.
I'm putting away my box cutter now, I've vented and now I feel better.

This thread makes me miss The Horde King. He asked a question directly to "The Oracle" and it reminded me how much fun this forum used to be with him here.

This thread made me think of this song:
Six Feet Under - Sick In The Head
I gotta find my way outta hell- I gotta find my way alone
I see myself dead by suicide by a knife, gun, a blade- or hanging high
Will I be safe or will I die can I stop the voices deep inside, my mind
Dead to me- you re dead to me- you re dead to me, all dead to me
Oh my fucking God!
I'm a victim I've lived through disaster- pushed too far this is a reaction
I hate your lies. I hate my life
Dead to me- you re dead to me- you re dead to me, all dead to me
Oh my fucking God!
I'm a victim I've lived through disaster- pushed too far this is a reaction- to you
I hate your lies. I hate my life
Hoping I ll find a way, a way to live, dead together
A way to hide my fears, a way to disappear
I can't take it- I won't make it, I ll just hate it- I can't take it
I won't make it- I just hate it, I can't take it
I can't change it- I can't take it- I can't take it, I won't make it
Dead to me- you re dead to me- you re dead to me, all dead to me
Dead dead you re soon to be dead
I put a 12-gauge under my chin
Dead to me- you re dead to me- you re dead to me, all dead to me
Oh my fucking God!
I'm a victim I've lived through disaster- pushed too far this is a reaction
died a thousand times again and again-in my mind- I have died
I have slowly withered
