View Full Version : Carbon Monoxide Detectors Question- Slight Chance of Urgency

My carbon monoxide detector has been going off for the past hour or so. As soon as it started I turned off my oven, opened all my windows, opened all my doors and it still keeps going off. Even when I hit the silence ever 5 minutes it keeps coming back on.
Can ovens cause the CO detector to go off? If not the oven, then what? How long should the alarm continuously go off? Was opening the doors and windows a good idea or useless? And what are signs of CO poisoning? Is it the type of thing I should contact my landlord at at this hour or how long should I wait?

Call the fire department and get outside. Better safe than sorry.

I believe signs of CO poisoning include falling asleep and dying. I would take Mojo's advice.

an oven can def. cause CO.

It can, which is why you're actually not supposed to have the detectors in your kitchen. If the detector is in another part of the house, that's still a LOT of CO to have set it off. I'd call the fire department to be sure.

Just make a sandwich and wait and see. Seriously I hope you aren't posting because you have left the house

Have you tried replacing the battery?
I think it was smart to open the door and windows, but if it's still going off, that could be a problem. Who knows what it is, could be your furnace.

It's not in my kitchen, it's in the living room/bedroom of my tiny studio so it might as well be the same. Anyway, I called the fire department (thanks MojoPin), they came, did readings, said they couldn't find anything on their meter and that sometimes letting the oven run for awhile can lead to it going off but not to worry.

OK, he's online, but he's not posting or answering my PM. I hope he just hates me and everything is fine or he ran outside and called the fire department.

*Phew*
Good to hear!
Yeah, it's always best to keep them away from the kitchen and even the bathrooms as those parts of the house can lead to false readings. If it goes off anywhere else, it's always better to be extra sure everything is OK.

Liddy does rule. God to see you are alive. I actually was concerned until I saw Mojo on the case

Good to hear every thing's fine.
I got CO poisoning once when I fell asleep in my running car in my garage with the door closed. Whoops.

Your heating unit (furnance/boiler) and water heater can also cause CO2 readings due to a back up in the flue.

I had all of those symptoms once. I wonder if Spoon had a carbon monoxide leak in his bedroom?

make sure you have the CO detector near the floor, as it is heavier than air.
my bro almost died in a house with 3x the safe limit of CO, and there were no detectors.
they only thing that tipped them off was a 160lb rotty going beserk, barking at the basement. there was a problem with the furnace, and it was filling the house with CO.
