It's actually the supreme example of his talents. He can almost instantly switch from drunk jokes with Dave to a serious discussion of the decline of tv news. No one else can pull that off.

I disagree. Sure it's a different energy, but I think "momentum" is all relative. R&F can switch the energy and tone of the show on a dime and make it any type of show they want to make it at any given time. It's pretty difficult to pigeon-hole the show into an easily definable category for that reason. That's one of the things I love about the show.
