More than one in 10 people who kill themselves in Manhattan are "suicide tourists" - out-of-towners who choose New York City landmarks to take their lives.
Their deaths cluster around some of the most famous, scenic spots in the city: the Empire State Building, Times Square and the George Washington Bridge, a new study shows.

The Golden Gate bridge is such a suicide magnet a controversial movie was recently released on DVD; called 'The Bridge'
IMDB LINK (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799954/)
If I remember it right; filmakers approached Golden Gate Bridege people and said theyd like to film the bridge extensively, almost constantly for months, but were nebulous about why, since they were trying to capture the many many people who jump, or look like they
re gonna jump, or start to climb over...
I cant remember the frequency, but it's so common a real-time alert system is in place, 24/7 looking for people walking across who start to look 'that way' and sending the Police out to get to people who are 'looking' like theyre gonna jump. The film shows many of these encounters.
It also shows many jumps; some in pretty horrific detail, and filmed some for many minutes as they looked and thought about it and climbed over a bit and then kept looking and then over the side and...
Cant recommend it; too self-serving and depressing, it's more about the depressing backstory of the jumpers [comes a bit across like they did this so the families wouldnt be mad their loved ones sudiced was filmed], and it doesnt even scratch the surface of suicide in general, or why jumping from a bridge, and what That bridge.
Watch the trailer; you'll see. Yow.
Sorry to de-rail; I went to college with a kid who lept off a 50 story Manhattan building and landed on a van. Very very sad.

I look out my window to the Marriott in Times Square. A police office who patrols Times Square told me that they get a lot of suicides there. People taking pills and od'ing. Probably about a dozen or so a year, whereas when it's reported the ambulances just roll in to the garage without sirens and the body is taken out.
The human ego is the ultimate attention whore. I can't take it anymore! I'm going out at the crossroads of the world! Well, not really, you're dead and you'll never even know if anyone will miss you. Morons.

In high school I had a friend who worked for AAA. He got a call one day from the mother of a person who jumped off the Newport Bridge wondering why she had to pay for the towing of his car (he drove up and left the car on the bridge). He couldn't even answer her. He just deleted the charge.

I know of one jumper that I'll always remember. In 2000, some Canadian jumped from the Empire State Building dressed as a pirate.
If you're gonna go, might as well make it memorable!

Isn't there actually a diagnosed phenomenon where Japanese tourists who go to Paris end being so overwhelmed by what they encounter compared to what they're used to that many of them have breakdowns or even kill themselves?

The National Park Service owns the land at both ends of the bridge. The filmmakers obtained permits from the NPS to place some of their cameras on NPS land under false pretenses. The NPS was not even a little happy when the trailer came out originally, and I believe there was some legal jockeying. This is one reason why the film's release was delayed for so long.

Yeah, I do remember reading about this. I think for the most part, the cameras were just mounted and left to record 24/7, without much monitoring. Some people might think that the filmakers just let all these people jump, but I would imagine that most of the jumps that weren't seen until after the fact.

I'm pretty sure you die before you hit. The heart during the fall seizes and then when you hit you're lifeless. That's what I heard from some place anyway.
The most horrifying jumps I ever saw were the footage during 9/11. When you would see people jumping from the trade centers. I know that wasn't suicide, just an alternative and trying to escape from the heat. Horrific.

Sometimes. You'll see plenty of footage (including some from 9/11) where people jumping from or falling from great heights are clearly moving around on their own and not just being moved about by the wind. Either way, you'd be dead instantly from the shock of the impact.
And people bringing up the idea that the documentary footage was all just cameras left to film...I think that much of the footage was obviously captured like that, but you'll see a number of those jumps are tracked as the person falls towards the water. Someone is clearly manning the camera then.

Yeah, and I'm sure those were the incidents where the film crew called in rescue and EMS. One of the NPS rangers from Golden Gate told me that there are some odd wave physics underneath the bridge, which result in unique currents and waves. He said that when a jumper hits a wave just so, it's like landing on a wire or a bar from that height and the body gets chopped up a little. I love the Pacific coastline, but it would be a terrible way to go.

Yes there is, i'm just not sure of the name of it. But the Japanese experience almost a "culture shock" when visiting Paris and they can indeed lead to psychological breakdowns or even suicide. Mike The Teacher stole my Golden Gate Bridge thunder, but about a week after I heard Ronnie talking about that documentary I was fortunate enough to catch it on IFC one night. It was pretty cool to watch, definately something worth checking out.

I just watched The Bridge and it is an incredible documentary. I found it a fascinating human view on life, death, depression and mental sickness.
You do not die before you hit.
And only a few wide shots of the bridge were left to film and capture a tranquil day on the bay and then you see and hear the splash.
The other shots of the film were following the people. The cameramen & women would sit at opposite ends of the bridge and track people all day. On the DVD there is a short making of doc, in which the camera workers, after only a few days, could tell who a potential jumper was. People jump from there all the time.
I didn't find it depressing or even horrible. I actually came away from it feeling lucky and glad, that no matter how much I think today might suck, I'm no where near those people who selfishly jumped.
You'll also look at the Golden Gate differently now. It's the number one place in the world for people to kill themselves. It's not so much a beautiful bridge, but also a harbor of death.
The picture I posted is an actual picture in the film. I highly recommend for all to see.
