View Full Version : Scenes Cell Phones Would Have Changed

You know, it's funny to watch a movie made in the pre-cell phone era and see a scene that would have been radically different if the characters had had access to a cell phone.

The scene that inspired me here was in the movie Short Cuts. In it, three guys are out on a fishing trip, and they discover a dead body in the lake they are to fish in. They debate about what to do, deciding to just continue their fishing trip.

Of course, were this movie set in the current day, one of them would have just whipped out their cell phone and dialed 911 (assuming they weren't out too far to get service.) Situation resolved. That wasn't an option back then, of course -- one of the fishermen (played by Huey Lewis, of all people) even says with some derision "Do you have a cellular telephone?", like that would be impossible.

So what other scenes in movies have you seen that the presence of a cell phone would have dramatically altered? I can think of several episodes of "Seinfeld" that this would apply to as well.

Would have saved hundred of thousands of lives. Emotional and economical stress that we are still feeling today.

Chew on this for a minute.

Herr Hottub,

Ich hasse, mit Ihnen auf diesem anderer Meinung zuSEIN, aber, wenn das nicht geschah, konnten wir alle Deutsches sprechen!

It's not just cell phones.

With modern banking, a movie like "It's a Wonderful Life" wouldn't exist.

I would also think 1/2 to 2/3 of The Godfather/GF2.

For what it's worth, Hottub, there was radar pings of the incoming attack, but they were disregarded.

That's partially due to the fact that they didn't have much confidence in the fact that the radar worked (which it did).

Then there's the whole "conspiracy theory thing". I think most of those theorists are the parents of 9/11 theorists.

And now for a movie... Bronson would have one hell of a problem if Donald Pleasance had had a cell phone in Telefon.

I think you could make a point that if the terrorists cut the phone lines, they would have something to block celllular calls or hurt service for that area.

That was 1988, I doubt terrorists (actually, thieves), would bother with something to block such a small technology at the time. They probably used up most of their budget hiring Theo.

I guess my point was that if there were cellular phones at that time like there are now per the premise, then they would bother to do that. Maybe they wouldn't have to block the service and much as damage the local service towers, etc. so no one had service.

Well then if you want to take the movie out of its time period then let's just say that Moses could have used his phone to call in an air strike on the Egyptians and skipped that whole messy walking through the sea part. Sheesh.

I'm just saying that if there were cell phones available in Die Hard, Hans Gruber, uber-villain and exceptional theif, would have accounted for it.

Of course. But moving any movie into modern day is too easy. Most problems would be solved just sitting at a computer.

But just giving a character a cell phone in a scene can be fun. Just a scene a cell phone would have changed.

Then again, KnoxHarrington, posed the question. Well Knox, what is it?

the first star wars really dates 1977 technology

e-mail, IM, or wireless transmissions would negate the need for stolen plans to be smuggled

and the internet would be a buzz about the government building a moon sized space station

This scene was done with cell phones in the obvious homage to Rear Window, "Mimic: Sentinel". I was bored and saw this movie On Demand. I expected an awful horror movie, but I got a movie that wasn't that bad.
