Is there any pain medication that can be taken as needed that is stronger than a regular advil/tylenol?

The pain I experience from my condition was always there but as of late it is getting worse and it keeps me up at night until I physically have to sleep. Some days it's worse than others, while some times it's nothing at all. Does anyone know of any medicine that can be taken on a "as needed" basis, prescription or not.

Would they give vidocin for pain related to multiple sclerosis though? Like, it would absolutely work, but I don't know. That would help.

Not sure if they would give it you or not. I am sure that using painkillers for long-term pain maintenance can be rough road to go down. I'm not at all saying don't do it, but in my experience with my back problems, the doctors are pretty quick to prescribe addictive substances without really preparing you for them.

Yeah. I'm just starting to fully realize how the disease works. The degenerative/chronic aspect of it. I'm still doing better than others, but christ when the pain hits, it hits hard. Last night, for instance, I self medicated with alcohol to try to numb it. It worked for like 20 minutes.

It's got to be incredibly frustrating. Stay on top of you're mental well-being as much as the physical. My stupid sciatica went on for a year and a half, and I thought that was bad.

I'm doing the best I can with the mental side. It's just the fear of not knowing what will happen from day to day. I know everyone can say that, it's just magnified for me. But people have problems a lot worse. That keeps me honest.

My neighbor has MS & he has breakouts every once in awhile when he is under pressure. When this happens his legs are affected the most. Is this the case with you. Like what I mean is do you notice you are in more pain when you are stressed out about something. My neighbor is a young kid like you also 21. He never knew he had it until one night he had a verbal fight with another neighbor & woke up the next morning & he could not walk. After alot of tests they found out it was MS. I think he goes to St. Barnibus hosp in Livingston, they say the DRs there are great. Well good luck & I wish you the best.

I was admitted to St Barnabas in Livingston when I had my first attack. Great doctors there. Top notch. I go to UMDNJ now for my appointments. Stewart Cook is my doctor, who was the former president of UMDNJ and one of the eladers in MS research. I'm blessed really.

During times of stress I do have attacks. For instance, this summer I had one while me and my now ex were breaking up. Nothing as romantic as getting dumped and limping, barely making it to your car.

But, I'm not really stressed about much now. I'me xcited about things actually. But who knows.

Thanks for the well wishes. It means a lot.

I would recommend talking to your GP about what to do for these episodes...the secret with narcotics (oxycodone, hydrocodone, propoxyphene, tramadol, etc) is that it is much more efficacious the less you use them (i.e. only use when things are REAL bad)...so your physician or pain management specialist would probably write you a script for something to use, but try to keep it in your pocket for when things are a 9/10 or a 10/10. Otherwise, prescription strength Motrin is 800mg every 8 hours for pain as needed...

I have two family members with MS, so my heart goes out to you...hope you feel better...

I'm not a big fan myself, but marijuana meets your criteria. Ask Montel Williams

I use Vicodin for my back an leg pain. I have a herniated disc, which also gives me sciatica. I say ask your doc. But dont come off as a drug seeker. I never asked for the stuff. They prescribed me it. If you can prove that ur in alot of pain an u need something strong, they will most likely give u it.

I would love to use marijuana for the pain. I've never smoked once in my life, so I don't know if it would help me, though I presume that it would for the "meadium" pain I feel.

I really don't want to come off like I want drugs, which is one of the reasons I'm just gritting my teeth and taking it. But I guess there comes a point you just have to say enough is enough.

Vicodin is an EXTREMELY addictive pain killer that could do as much damage to you as the MS Be extremely careful with it if it is prescribed

Yeah, because addicts want to be dependent on something because it's so liberating and comfortable.

I'd feel more comfortable getting them through a doctor. Getting them from a dealer would make me feel I'm just looking for a high. I'm not.

yea but alot of doctors wont prescribe meds liek that, they'd rather give you tylenol 3's (tylenol with codene) which fucking suck

If thats the case then you can always go with the drug dealer route

fwiw...your doctor (if he's a good one) should be amenable to rx'ing pain meds for you...according to hospital codes today, pain is the 5th vital sign, so there is a movement to treat pain more aggressively so patients don't suffer...so definitely talk to your doctor about it...

Hope all is well-

My 100th post!

Hi all,

I am a newbie here. I've been listening to Ron and Fez about 6 months now and I am hooked for sure. XM 202, my latest addiction. Regular radio will never do again. It can't compare.

I was also a nurse for eight years, and I've been on several narcotics for pain ...and for fun as well, before I got hurt, lifting a pt I think....I have been on methadone 80mg a day for about the last 2 years....now currently down to 55 mg/day. I cut back 5mg a week, so far so good.

I am no longer a nurse. They (state board of nursing) said go get help and I said I have a right to party. They declined to renew my license.

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering. Most docs will give you vicodin, no prob. It is not all that addicting for most people. We're all different. By all means please see your doc and talk to him. If he/she doesn't help...fuck em, go see someone else. You deserve compassionate care. We all do.

Pain meds are wonderful and awful. They work great for a time, but then tolerance sets in. I am weaning myself off the methadone now. It no longer kills my pain, I'm reduced to taking it just to keep the withdrawals at bay. I've decided I want my life back and I'll deal with the pain. It' sciatica/disk stuff for me....fuck it, I'm used to it.

I sure hope your pain is resolved.

I gotta go ...4am comes early.

I think they were called "222's". They are tylenol with codeine from England. If you know anybody going on vacation to the Bahamas have them pick up a bottle and put it in their luggage.

It's been awful lately. Last night I left work early cause I was in so much pain. I came home and immediately called up my friend and asked for pot. She came through and I smoked to help get rid of the pain. It dulled it, and I didn't get high, but it was my first time.

I fell asleep with minor pain, but woke up this morning with the same bad pain I had last night.

It's freaky though, cause one minute it hurts like hell, and the enxt I can't even feel my leg. It fucking sucks.

I jsut got put on Gabapentin, which is the generic form of Neurotonin 3. It's to help me with my pain. I have to take one pill before bed. I'm interested to see how it works, but I'm also kind of concerend. My pain isn't always at night, though it is more at night.

Has anyone ever heard of this stuff, or have any experience with it?
