I've been asked to take some long MP3 files and isolate some specific sound out of it. In the past when I did this, I had to convert to wav, edit, and then put it back together as an MP3. I want to avoid that, if possible.

What's the best program to do that? Thanks in advance.

i do a podcast with a friend and i use something called "goldwave" you can download a sample to see it it will do what you want, or another thing called "audacity" its totally free and does the same stuff as goldwave only its not as fancy. google goldwave sound editor or audacity you should find it. with either one of these you will need to download an encoder (its called LAME something) which is very easy to do, if you want to save it as mp3.

I've always used MP3 Cutter, but I think I'm gonna check out mp3DirectCut. It has a better interface.

It's a great program. I've used Audacity before, but MP3DirectCut is my preferred method for isolating sections of MP3s. It's limited in what it does, but what it does is incredibly easy to use. I daresay that without MP3Direct Cut, the file library wouldn't be nearly as big as it is.

I will also say mp3 direct cut that Mikeyboy recommended. it is very fast and easy, and is a small program that does not put shit all in your computer

I agree, it's easy easy easy. Plus there's not installation involved, the whole program runs in one folder which means you can copy the folder to another computer and use it there.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but now that there have been a few answers to that question, so as not to start another thread for something similar...

Let's say you want to rip the sound from a DVD or from an .avi file to use as a ringtone, or just a simple .mp3 that makes you laugh...anyone know a program that can help accomplish this?

As long as you can play the dvd on your comp, audacity (and probably the others mentioned) can allow you to record any part of what you hear. After that, it's just a matter of what your particular phone requires for a ring tone. Mine can use any mp3 that I load on it. With my old phone, I just used the built in voice recorder and held the phone up to the speakers. Crude, but it worked.

Cool, I've been wanting a program like this for a while. It should make putting together mix CDs a bit easier.

MP3 Trimmer (http://deepniner.net/mp3trimmer/) works well for Mac.

I use it occasionally so I can handle the waiting screen instead of spending $11. Easy to use.

I used this last night to extract yesterday's Sextravaganza. It was very fast, and it worked seamlessly across the network. Perfect!

And after downloading the flick, I have to agree with Bronx Johnny. 5/5...
