Fire Pro Wrestling Returns - American Translation (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/745/745588.html)

I've played the Japanese version of this game and it's fun as hell. For the money you pay for it, it's well worth the investment.

It's fifteen bucks. How can you not?

For those who are not initiated:

Fire Pro games are 2D. Where the WWE games of late have focused on making them look as "real" as possible, the gameplay has severely lacked.

Firepro, on the other hand, is about creating wrestlers, giving you as many options as possible, and making the gameplay as fun as hell.

MMA? In there.

Cage match? yah.

Barbed wire? Hell yeah.

What is the game play like? Is it grapple based, or would I have to do a 15 button combo to throw a punch?

MHasegawa
11-06-2007, 04:43 AM
its grapple based, as soon as the wrestlers lock up (perfect timing is key) you have 3 types of damage attacks (based by button) to choose from- small, medium and large damage, also hitting the d pad and attack button at lock up also perform different moves as well.

On another note, this has to be the biggest roster for any fire pro video game i've ever seen with the addition of newer independent promotions especially DDT and.

I have to buy a new PS2, I'm weary of once again playing Fire Pro D on the 'cast.

Grapple based, button mashing. You lock up, and hit a direction + one or two buttons depending what you are trying to do and you hit the move.

For example, if I wanted to hit a medium power move, I'd push down + square. If I wanted to hit my finisher, I'd hit Left + square/triangle.

It's one of the reasons I like it, the control system is relatively simple.

The Wrestler Edit mode is the biggest deal about this game. I know there aren't a lot of Americans in this game, but you can add them almost instantaneously. And they look spot-on.

What's up MHasegawa... I was waiting for you to show up in this thread.

My current version of Fire Pro Returns (Japanese) has a bunch of American wrestlers, including pretty much the entire WWE, TNA, and ROH lineup, with a few "classics" and legends in there as well. For example, I have Public Enemy, The Gangstas, and The Eliminators, along with DOC AND GORDY.

DOC AND GORDY

DOC AND GORDY

DOC AND GORDY

... I'm sorry, what was I saying?

If - and this is a big if - the current edits packs work with the translation - the lineup I posted above will be expanded by about 150 American wrestlers almost instantaneously.

Plus, you can also build you own wrestlers, with a lot more variables and looks than any other Create-A-Wrestler in other wrestling games.

Did I mention the exploding cage matches?

Is it a hold down one button grappling or more difficult. I liked the old WWF games for the N64, but not the Smackdown games for Playstation. Which is it closer to?

Collision grappling. As soon as you run into the guy, you grapple, and then you button mash to hit the move.

I've never played the old WWF games for N64, but the learning curve on the moves is very very easy. One of the reasons I don't play fighting games is because I get so frustrated hitting the combos - this is not the case.

I highlighted them, but it was just a quick sweep of names I recognized and/or the typical fan would recognize. Of course, I highlighted Naniwa but missed Curry man. Spicy Drop rules.

From Wikipedia:

Features
Like other titles in the Fire Pro Wrestling series, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns distinguishes itself from other wrestling games by focusing on timing and complex strategy, as opposed to the button-mashing tactics with which most wrestling gamers are familiar for 2-D games. Although an unofficial English language fan translation was reportedly in the works, Agetec has since announced the release of an official North American port of the game, to be released in mid-November 2007. A release for Europe is also planned, although no publisher has been announced. Fire Pro Wrestling Returns offers a roster of 327 wrestlers from a variety of real-life wrestling companies. Using a sophisticated design mode, the game also allows players to build and wrestle with or against 500 additional characters. Players can create custom wrestling rings, belts, promotions, and referees.

Character customization
Unlike a number of previous Fire Pro titles, Returns does not imitate rosters of American wrestling companies like World Wrestling Entertainment. However, the game's hefty stockpile of template heads, bodies, clothes and accessories has allowed American fans to recreate many of their favorite wrestling superstars, and make them available for download online. As reported by IGN, Returns supplies new customizing tools, such as a "Face Layer" feature that allows players to create a wrestler's face using multiple objects. Hundreds of wrestler faces are available, including those of many historical wrestlers. Players can add up to two layers of facial accessories, including hair styles, visors, beards, helmets and tattoos. "One example starts with a base face, adds a mohawk... and finishes off with a colorful mask," IGN.com's review stated. Returns provides 1,649 wrestling moves to choose from when customizing a character and the game's engine allows you to give the character complicated logic instructions dictating how the character behaves in a variety of situations.

Other new features
Edit Slots: On top of the game's roster of 327 pre-made wrestlers from real-life wrestling promotions, players are allowed to build and store up to 500 highly-customizable wrestler edits at a time. That is compared to the 216 edit slots made available in Fire Pro Wrestling D and Fire Pro Wrestling Z. So, in Returns, up to 827 wrestlers can be chosen.

Updated Roster: Smaller indy promotions are represented in their entirety in Returns.

New Moves: A variety of new wrestling moves have been added to Returns, including reanimated versions of moves seen in previous Fire Pro titles.

Faction Customization: In Returns, you can now create "face"/"heel" factions within the promotions themselves, so players can recreate such popular stables or their own fictional teams.

Traditional Steel Cage Match: A long-awaited new feature makes its way into Returns. This is not to be confused with other more "electrifying" steel cage matches in the Fire Pro Wrestling series.

Preset match options: You can save up to 4 preset match setups for most of the game's modes. This saves players time when they want to use the same match setups frequently.

Giant-sized wrestlers: "G-Size" makes its debut in Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, meaning players can create characters as large as André the Giant or Giant Gonzalez to tower over their competition.

"Corner-To-Center" attack position: A new wrestler position for the wrestlers to position themselves in adds an additional layer of strategy to Returns.

New deathmatch types: New deathmatch types offer electrified ropes, barbwired ropes and landmines, allowing wrestlers to cause each other further harm.

Managers/seconds at ringside: Users can create a manager for your wrestler and also play as the manager at ringside.

Post-match attacks: Removed from Fire Pro Wrestling Z, the ability to attack your opponent after a match has ended has been returned in Fire Pro Wrestling Returns.

Improved sound: Audience sounds have been enhanced and attendees will chant along with specific wrestler taunts and poses.

Larger wrestler sprites: New sprites are larger, sharper and more detailed than sprites found in Fire Pro Wrestling Z.
