I don't know why, but this popped into my head today. At what age should you stop identifying yourself by the music you listen to? I don't mean you should stop listening to it, but more the "I'm a...." punk, emo, metalhead, (or for the older folks), mod, rocker, etc. I'm talking about dressing for the genre, only hanging out with people that are into the same thing, all of that. I'm thinking you should be done with it by the time you turn 30. Unless, of course, you're a musician, and you're selling the image. Then, you need to knock it off by the time you're 35. Thoughts?

I say after college, 22 or 23. At that time you're trying to get yourself a career and there's no point to trying to represent the shit you're into.

I never dressed in a way that a musical genre dressed. I mean, I did, but not conciously. And I guess I would fall into several categories.
But 12. By 12, you should be thinking about marriage. We're going back to medevil times.

Personally, I think you should never be identified solely by your musical tastes.

Never. I love 50 year old guys who still dress as punk rockers. Nothing like a bald guy with long hair and a spiked leather jacket.

true
I never understood people that were only into (and identified themselves with) one type of music. Even in high school it wasn't uncommon for me to take a trip to the record store and bring home albums by Waylon Jennings, John Lee Hooker, and The Clash. My tastes have only grown with age, as have those of most people I know.

Exactly. I'd go get Metallica, Dr. Dre and a Sinatra. I remember being a kid in the '80's and getting into fights with one set of friends because I liked rap and another set of friends because I like metal. I never understood being closeminded with music. It's a matter of taste. Why should I care what the next man enjoys?
