O and A were talking about "Best of" albums yesterday and I know some people don't like them, but sometimes some bands have a ton of albums and you don't want to buy them all or you only like a few songs and you want one album for starters to get into them. So what are some of your favorite best of albums. No box sets and no live albums that is to easy.
Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks vol. 1
The Who - Meaty, Big, and Bouncy
The Cure - Standing on the Beach (I am not sure of the title there were 3 of them all different album, cassette, and cd) I owned them all.
America -History

The Kinks have a pretty massive discography (and a number of best-of compilations), but this one, with 46 tracks, does a pretty good job of encompassing their entire career.

Hmmm, not sure what happened to my pics. Maybe Rate Your Music doesn't like hotlinkers. Anyway, my picks are:
The Kinks - The Kink Kronikles
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits
The Undertones - The Very Best of
Talking Heads - Sand in the Vaseline

Skeletons from the Closet.
Not because the songs on it are really the best Dead songs, but because it is the perfect "Grateful Dead 101" beginners' course.
I dare any 12 year old to hear it and not begin the long path into the depths of the Dead's catalog. :smoke: <---Not a cigarette.

Hell, bands like Britny Fox have a Best Of Album, so why not Creed?
I'll go with a few things:
Though technically not a studio best of, Springsteen's 3-CD Live Set is an excellent representation of his best work (that is, that's available commercially. A good portion of the bootlegs that are out there are far more superior).
The "Essential" series of CDs that have been put out are also very very good.

But you have to admit best of albums are a great way to get into a band you're not familiar with.
I dug out my copy of Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy this morning and I'm a happy camper. I haven't listened to it in years!
I saw ya!

This one is much, MUCH better:

I have tons of best-of's, but most of them I have because even though I already had all or most of the songs, the tracks included were typicalled remastered for better quality. That said, one of the few I have that I think is genuinely good beyond just being a typical best of is this:
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00004WGYB.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
And my vote for the band that doesn't have a real best of (live albums don't fucking count) that desperately needs one is AC/DC. I happily own everything up through BiB, but I want stuff like "Thunderstruck" only if it's showing up on a best of comp, thank you very much.

Actually I was disappointed by that one. Time Warner didn't bother to get the rights to the Twin Tone years, which in my opinion is a shame. How can you do a Replacements Best Of without "I Will Dare"?

Yeah, the newer one has the Twin-Tone stuff, but Alice's pick is a really great comp, especially with the second disc of assorted b-sides and such.

I was strictly judging Disc 1 of All for Nothing since it's the "best of" disc vs. Don't You Know. I thought Rhino did an outstanding job of telling the complete story. The Twin Tone years add:
Color Me Impressed
Within Your Reach
I Will Dare
Answering Machine
Unsatisfied
Seriously, is it a real best of without those tracks?
I completely appreciate All for Nothing for Disc 2 however. It's a great B-sides compilation.

Rush Chronicles is a great introduction to the band for newbies. I picked it up when I was about 11 and was hooked on the band for life. I have a best of INXS that is pretty good too but it's missing Don't Change; other than that it's a great disc very well rounded.
