View Full Version : Comedy-Drama Actors

They brought this up on the show today about actors who are equally adept at comedy and drama. Ronnie mentioned Alec Baldwin but I have to give the edge to Tim Robbins. He can be amazingly intense or ridiculously silly; a brilliant character, an average man and a flat out moron.
Any other names you want to throw out there?

I would say John Turturro - he is incredibly versatile and (IMO) underrated. He is probably best known for comedy, but he has also done some quality dramatic work.

From Bachelor Party to Philadelphia, Tom Hanks.
From Vacation to The Wild Life, Randy Quaid.
From Pulp Fiction to Day of the Dead, Ving Raimes.

Although he doesn't always choose the best projects, I think John Goodman is a really solid actor. There are some sparkling jewels mixed in with all the crappy projects he has done.

If he was known primarily for his Coen Brothers movies, he'd likely be thought of as a great actor.

Agreed. Those comprise several of the jewels I mentioned.

Kevin Costner, funny? What am I forgetting?
and I disagree with Deniro as well. After Midnight Run, he was never funny again, with the possible exception of Meet The Parents.
(edit: I checked imdb for Costner...he was frat boy #2 in 1982's Night Shift. I stand corrected.)

You must have missed Analyze This! It gave me the superLOLZ! Cause he was a tough mafia guy but he needed a smarmy therapist with a quick wit and an ironic smirk, which normally a tough guy wouldn't need.

That's the best call so far. In fact I'd have said he's mainly known as a dramatic actor, especially Quiz Show which put him on the mainstream A-list as an actor. But his talent really stands out in both genres and probably even moreso in comedy dramas like his Coen Brothers and Spike Lee work, Rounders, and his self-written and directed Illuminati.
I'll add: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Tony Shalhoub of MIB, Jamie Foxx, (who'd have guessed he'd go from the ugly chick on In Living Color to Oscar-winner in Ray?), Jack Lemmon (OK, Jack probably eclipses Turturo in this category - probably the best ever to do both well), the great Charles Durning who's done such great work for the Coens as well as great dramatic and comedy work for 40 years - from Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface and The Sting to Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Family Guy, the great Strother Martin, who's best roles, both comedic and dramatic added so much color to some of Paul Newman's biggest hits: Butch Cassidy, Slap Shot and Cool Hand Luke, and I think Robin Williams deserves honor in this category.
I'd also disqualify DeNiro for doing so much bad comedy like Rocky and Bullwinkle and Showtime.

A lot of names I would have said have already been posted, so I'll add on with Vacation's own Beverly D'Angelo. Saw American History X again recently, she's great in that movie.

I had successfully blocked out all Susan Sarandon movies.... til now. thanx alot.

Good call. Some of his SNL appearances were fucking brilliant: Peter Jennings hosting the 1988 Presidential debates, Mr. Short Term Memory Loss, a roadie for Aerosmith on Wayne's World.
But Mr. Two-Time Academy Award winner will always be Pep Strebek to me!

Seriously, his may be the most dramatic crossover on the list.
