View Full Version : Can You Get Mono From Someone Who Had It 7 Years Ago?

That's pretty much the extent of my question. I have had a very high fever for 3 days now, upwards in the range of 103-104. I went to the doctor today and strep came back negative. He said it's too early to tell, but he suggested I could have mono. I have recently swapped saliva with someone who doesn't have mono now, but had it 7 years ago. I've heard that once you have it, it's in your system forever... Is it possible she passed it on to me?

I've missed 2 days of work already, and I want to die.

You probably had it already. Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus and most people have it in their systems.

So... is that a no?

Once you get over mono, your symptoms will go away for good, but you still carry the virus that caused it. The virus may become active from time to time without causing any symptoms. When the virus is active, it can be spread to others.

BUT:
Adults usually do not get mono, because they have immunity to the virus.

One time I though I had mono for like an entire year, turns out I was just really bored.

YES! My first double post. I'm gonna be a super poster in no time.

Wow, a split-double post! that is impressive.

I think Mono is usually contagious from about 2 weeks to 2 months. But the other posts also have it right - once you have Mono it's always in your blood stream.

Have you ever had Mono before Z? If not, it is possible that the chick passed it to you since it is always in your system and can "randomly" become active.

Wait a fucking minute here. Aren't you supposed to be the one giving medical advice? I mean, you are a doctor, aren't you?

Well... I'm 23, so that basically makes me a qualifying candidate.

And no, I've never had it.

I just got over mono at the age of 28... and I didn't have it before, I'd been tested for it as recently as 2 years ago.

Oh sure, blame the Jews.

Okay, so after a little bit of research, I just read something that is a bit encouraging...

Firstly, it says that mono can be transmitted years after recovery (like many of you said), but it "very unlikely".

Secondly, and more significant (I think), is this:

"People who have mono can be contagious from the time they first become infected with the virus. But they may not know that they have the virus in its early stages. That's because it takes a while from the time a person is infected to the time symptoms of mono show up — about 4 to 7 weeks in fact. (This is called the incubation period.)"

The period between initial contact and symptoms is 4 to 7 weeks. For me, the night in question happened a mere 12 days ago.
Must. Stay. Positive.

7 (edit: GENERAL "OUT OF 10" SCALE! NOT 7 YEARS OLD, CUZ I KNOW THE JOKE WAS THERE!)

And in retrospect, not worth it.

Aw. Don't think like that. If you have herpes, then think like that, but not for mono.

I know I'm a freak for how long I've gone without sex or anything resembling intimate contact (we're talking years), but I do enjoy not worrying about herpes and mono.

Just an update for anyone interested...

As it turned out, it ended up not being mono, just meningitis.

As long as it's just the viral kind, it's not so bad.

Yeah, I have my shots for the bacterial kind (which kills you in 48 hours). It was viral. Still pretty bad though. I got it from my friend, and he ended up in the hospital.
