View Full Version : Where to buy pepper spray?

My neighborhood has been pretty safe but there has been an increase in muggings during the last few months (not to mention we have marauding wolf packs (http://www.nj.com/hudsoncountynow/index.ssf/2007/09/cops_wolf_pack_thugs_taped_the.html)). I usually don't worry too much about these things but I come home after 11pm and sometimes I have to park several blocks from my apartment.

Where can I buy pepper spray? I've seen places on line but I'd like to pick some up sooner rather than later. Would army navy stores carry it?

I believe so. If not, that's probably one of the best places to ask where to get it.

Also, Fuzzy, an alternative deterrent would be a long silver MagLite. The best way not to get mugged is to indicate you have something on you that would hurt a lot. To most people, it's just a flashlight, to a potential mugger, it's a warning sign to keep away.

You know, I thought of that but a friend pointed out that if the mugger doesn't heed the warning to stay away and actually attacks me, he could use it on me! With pepper spray, I can spray it while he is a few feet from me and get away.

I you do decide to carry it, you should practice with it a little if you aren't planning on getting trained. It is very easy to get blowback and cripple yourself.

A flashlight?
You're telling her to defend herself with a fucking flashlight?

Holy shit.

Women should know that even if they dont have actual pepper spray, anything sprayed in the eyes of an attacker may give you enough time to get away. Hairspray, perfume, anything... you spray it in their eyes and while they back off, thinking youre spraying mace... you can get away.

Also, in regard to those recent NJ wolf packs... EVERYONE needs to remember NEVER get into a perps car, no matter what. Let them beat you, even shoot you in public view, because what happens in the car can/will be alot worse.

Be careful out there.

You're a fucking idiot. The maglite has long been touted as "the last line of defense" for most people in Law Enforcement. It's basically a police baton. At 14 inches and four pounds, it's enough to stop someone cold with a good shot across the face.

Sure it is...but as a woman - I'd rather not have to get close enough to get a shot at his face. I'm all for self-defense...by any means necessary. I think Alice wants a bit of a longer range weapon than the maglite.

A really good place to check online is defendingwomen.com (http://www.defendingwomen.com/). It has mace, stun guns, etc. and the prices are really good.

In the short term (and for immediate protection), you might want to check the Camping and/or Automotive sections of your local Walmart, K-Mart, or other "full service" shopping center. I know they used to sell mace for protection from "wildlife" in the camping/sporting goods department and would carry the mace key chains in automotive. A gun store is another good place to check - whether it's purely a gun store or a place like Cabelas or Bass-Pro that has hunting and sporting goods.

Another option is to get a small squirt bottle you might use for laundry or training a cat, set it to squirt a stream, then fill it with hot sauce or a mix of hot sauce & vinegar, hot sauce & alcohol, etc. And the stronger the hot sauce, the better.

Be aware that some states have made it illegal to carry mace, or necessitate a license of sorts to legally carry it. Sometimes yo have to go through a hunting safety course. You will probably need to check online for the rules and regs for your area - maybe even call your local PD.

Hope that helps! Be safe.

If there is a Dicks sporting goods store near you, you may find it there. Or, a gun shop will definitely have it. Postmen have dog spray, which is essentially the same thing. Do you know any postmen?

I was once mugged by a guy from an asian street gang. I sprayed him with duck sauce.

My wife used to bartend at a cop bar in Chicago when I met her, and we still have a nice set of brass knuckles that some detective gave her when she worked there.

I WOULD NOT WANT HER TO HIT ME WITH THEM.

I'd go for taser or stun gun, I'd be paranoid I'd spray the pepper spray the wrong way and hit my own eyes

How do you know that you wouldn't accidentally taser yourself?

any sport shop (hunting and bait shop) will carry it. They even have bear spray which is the most intense stuff around

When i used to come into the city when i was 16-17 i carried a switch i'm with missy on the P.S. I would end up fumbling and either dropping it or spraying it sideways.

I'd say if you could get a taser that would be the best bet.

I'm looking to pick up a switchblade and maybe some brass knuckles just because I've heard and seen horror stories about Phnom Penh. I saw an American guy get beaten by about a dozen tuk tuk drivers in the street. Turns out he deserved it plenty but it left an impression. I've heard of several murders and several rapes and a ton of muggings. I do miss the safety of the Middle East.

Last time we were in Winnipeg, we went into a Hunting supplier for this specific reason. Ever since I started my own business hubby has been worried about me leaving the salon late at night.
Turns out it's illegal to carry here in Manitoba. You can get large cans of bear spray, but the cans are so big they would be a pain in the ass to carry, not nice and compact like the size that mailmen would carry.

I've noticed an increase of muggings in my neighborhood too. It's a shame because when I first moved there, it was shady and now it's all built up, but it's not nearly as safe as it was.

Funny you should say that Furtherman. My neighborhood was always pretty safe but then all the yuppies moved in and crime is on an up swing.

Fucking yuppies and their crimes!

Taser is point and shoot. Too many factors involved in pepper spray, like wind blowing it back into your face, nozzle turned wrong way, etc

Back when I was in HS, I used to take a short cut down the train tracks to get to town and I carried a giant kitchen knife in my jacket.

This is the coolest product I have found so far:

http://www.defendingwomen.com/images/medium/stungun_blastknuckles_MED.jpg

They are called Blast Knuckles and add a 950,000 volt kick to your punch. Plus, the attacker can't take it away from you easily since you lace your fingers/fist through it.

For less than $65 I might pick up a set for my fiance.

Since you lace your fingers through it, I'm afraid that I'd wind up tasering myself if there is a scuffle. (Or the mugger might start a game of "Why are you punching yourself?")

Only if you're mugged by Nelson, Jimbo, Dolph and Kearney.

Id try this product. At 18% its the strongest stuff out there. Not expensive, light and small easily in hand as you walk. Thats the key - you can walk down teh street with this thing in your palm and ready to go if anyone approaches.

As to illegality - who gives a shit, better to be on trial for assault with a peppery weapon than 6 feet under.
