Once in a while, I like to go to a local diner and get food to bring back to my office. The cashier tells me to go to the counter and give my order to a waitress. The waitress takes my order, bags it up, brings it out to me, and then hands me a check. I have to bring the check back to the cashier and pay the bill.

What's the proper etiquette on tipping?
No Tip?
Partial Tip?
Full Tip (as if you ate there)?

No tip on take out.

2nd question:
What if anything, do you tip the lady who does your laundry (drop off/pick up)? I feel like I should tip someone who's handling my unmentionables...but I never have. Should I maybe do a Christmas gift thing?

i personally never tip on take out...unless its a place where i go all the time...if they see you consistenly tipping that can lead to discounts every once in a while...or some extra food thrown in

No Tipping on Take Out, You are paying the Same Menu Price and Not getting any service

Why add to your losses

No Tip

Depends on my mood and the system employed.

If I get take-out and the bartender takes my order, no tip. Traditionally waitstaff has to tip out to the bartenders.

If they are using a MICROS system and I'm not sure whose account it's being logged to, I may tip out a dollar or so they aren't tagged at the end of the night.

The best tip in this case, if you aren't sure, is a dollar or two. That's it.

I didn't used to tip on a takeout order. I do now.

If there is a tip cup I'll put a dollar in it. The last job I had I lived day to day hoping to get tips.

The way it was explained to me is that packing up the food, adding forks, napkins, straws, putting condiments and dressings in those little containers, etc. is actually more work than the "service" you get during a sit-down meal. I don't know if it's true, but I tip for that reason.

Huh? The condiments and dressings are usually done before the place opens for the day and stored in the walk-in as part of prep-work. And getting the forks/napkins is usually done while you're standing there. The cooks place the food in the takeout boxes, not the wait staff. They are salaried.

There is a lot more service involved getting drinks, making sure the order is right, etc. Incorrect orders usually happen more on take out than they do on sit-downs.

I tip a dollar or two, but that's it. No way they get 15% on a takeout.

Is this some thinly-veiled 2girls1cup reference?

I have the same question. I've been taking stuff to the wash and fold and it's always the same woman, and she does a great job. My sister claims this is the type of person you just tip at xmas.. but how much? $25? $50?

yeah, especially hard because she always remembers me and calls me by name.
I was thinking of a gift, but dont wanna offend her culture by giving the wrong thing (liquor?).

Maybe a gift card to jcpenney or something?

any amount of money, i think, would be an insult because if i tipped her throughout the year, she wouldve made more.

Oh, you fancy, fancy people. With your take-out dinners and Fluff and Fold. I put the fishsticks in the microwave, then go down to the river and beat my crusty undies against a rock.

I don't tip on take out food, and im not exactly sure why. its just something i dont do. when i used to wait tables some nights i'd host instead and that was where the takeouts occurred. most people didn't tip and it didnt bother me in the slightest. if i got a tip on a take out it was an added bonus. so i think that plays some role into why I dont tip on take outs, because i was never offended if i didnt get a tip.

Is this some thinly-veiled 2girls1cup reference? I worked as a hairdressers assistant. I could wash hair that hair coloring wasn't invovlved. State regulations. And it was a best friend of ours that had to let me go. I haven't since him since.

If there's a tip jar, and they don't have waitresses, I toss in all the change in my pocket.

Just tip them a bit....

It shows a bit of class....

And I know that 99.9% of us RF.netters are classy folk.....

And I have enough class not to mention who makes up that .10%.....

Same here. I'll tip a dollar or two if there's a tip jar, or if I'm paying with a credit card and there's a tip line on the receipt.

i'm sure this thread is a repeat, but i'm too lazy to look. at a diner i'll tip a buck or two for take-out, but if i order chinese or pizza take-out, no tip. i can't explain why, it just seems like the proper thing to do.

I usually give some sort of a tip on take out. Not nearly the same amount I would for full service, but I give a few dollars depending upon the service. If the place isn't busy and they are taking their sweet time to bring me my food I won't give them anything. I've seen it numerous times where the thing I ordered comes in and sits there. I'll watch it just waiting while the wait staff or the bartender get social with one another. To me that's BS and if the time hasn't come for the tip yet I'll leave it blank if it happens. Usually for prompt service I'll leave $3 or 4 depending.

For the fluff and fold, I agree, I think they should be tipped, usually around $25 at Xmas is good.

I started this thread once and it'd probably been done prior to that. If I knew how or had time I'd look it up. That being said if I remember correctly the concensus was that if they clean up after you then you should tip. That's my rule of thumb anyway.

I always tip for take-out...Having worked in restaurants and bars through college I always found the take out orders to be somewhat of a bitch so I appreciate the effort.

i think it all depends. if its a diner/bar/restaurant, i leave a tip; if its a dunkin donuts, then no tip

I appreciate all of the feedback. Sorry for not doing a proper search to see if the topic had been discussed before. At least all of the responses are fresh, not stale.
